Card Hunter!!!
This is a free game with for-pay extra stuff. It is set up like a tabletop game with minis, a battlemap, and the tabletop has things on it like dice pens and books to add to the effect. You move your minis around and perform actions with Cards that are attributed to each party member based on their equipment (a mace will have 6 or so cards with a range of attacks from a hard attack that targets one foe to a weak attack that can hit a couple). It's a really interesting setup and fun as heck to play.
PC Gamer magazine did an article on it in the holiday issue 2013 and gave it 85 out of 100 and that is how I heard of it.
You don't need to pay for anything to have a full-rich game, but if you did decide to pay you do get some really cool extra stuff.
A quote from the review: "I never felt like I was missing out by not spending money." and another "It's a remarkably ungreedy free-to-play design choice that makes multiplayer in particular a tense and satisfying experience".

Believe me, if you enjoy Tabletop RPGs and Virtual Tabletops, you will love this game. What the heck, it's free too!

This is a nostalgia trip for me. The art style is absolutely from the original D&D and first edition AD&D stuff.

I've played just the free stuff and gotten to eighth level, switching items in and out to change the deck.

BTW, that's a cool feature. It's a deck game, but you don't get cards. You get different types of items/weapons/armor which have several cards associated with them. When you switch items, you switch up your deck.

If you grew up playing tabletop RPG, not just video games, you're going to really like this one. And the humor is good.

You can play solo or multiplayer, though I've not tried the latter.

I wish more games like this were being made....it gives me hope for our gaming future. Pretty awesome game.

Anyone else playing this yet? I am engrossed in the single player game and was wondering if anyone is enjoying the multiplayer stuff yet.

Fake Healer, you sonofa ... yeah, I'm hooked. ;)

Great game and I can see many hours of burned time in front of the PC ... very 1e feel for the visuals. :)

Nice! I have to make others into addicts. The more the merrier!!!

It's kind of ironic. I've tried out quite a few online CCGs (Shadow Era, Elements, Tyrant, Clash of Dragons, etc.) and they all eventually have significant pay walls but are never good enough to warrant them. Card Hunter does not, but based on the little bit that I've played, I'd actually be willing to throw some money at it. Needless to say, I'm hooked.

Strategy in deck building does seem important here. I haven't quite figured it out myself, but I often find that my characters (Cleric, mage, fighter) often have only one or two offensive cards in a hand. Having only a couple attack cards out of fifteen (I think) makes for a bad round. I've had the dwarf fighter with no attacks in his hand more than once.

Footwear really seems to impact how many movement cards end up in your hand (not deck, hand).

@Holmes, as you gain levels you unlock more slots for items so the problem begins going away. I am 8th level with my party and I have roughly twice the amounts of items that are usable, racial skill items, extra weapons, helm for the fighter, shield for the cleric, class skill items....it is pretty cool and flexible. I still find I sometimes overload a certain type of item (movement usually) and need to adjust. Items also have good variety of abilities...pick up a spiked shield and you get block cards and attack cards...same with spiked armor.
It really does have some depth.

@sebastrd- I was checking out how to buy extra pizza slices (in game currency for the non-players reading this) and they have a "Basic Set" package that unlocks all of the 11 bonus campaigns, give you 9 new figures to use as PCs and sets you up with 100 pizza slices....all for $25. I am probably going to do this eventually as I feel like the value and fun is worth it, at minimum.
I am very happy with this game and wish more game makers would follow suit here.

I also like that you can go through the adventures over again for extra XP and loot...it helps me to gather more variety of items and make the party more diverse.

so anyone have any experience with the multiplayer part of the game? i'd love to hear a story or 3...

The Exchange

My party is now 18th level and I still love this game.
The story is pretty cool and has me wanting to find out how things are going for my computer "gm" and the girl, and I find the quests to be well done and interesting re-takes and reimaginings of some classic D&D adventures with some really good twists to them. The combat is very tactics oriented and satisfying while being challenging. I am thoroughly enjoying this game....still totally for free!

You try multiplayer yet? If so, what do you think of it?

(I haven't).

Sovereign Court

I tried multiplayer and it was pretty good ... basically arena style against another player and you earn chests for every victory. Everyone I've played was surprisingly nice on chat as well.

Just found out about this game and I have to say it's amazing. It's like taking the pathfinder card game and mixing it with old school D&D.
