Uh oh, oncoming girly moment... Lookit all the horsies! *SQUEE!* =3

Yes, anyone who wants to buy and keep a mundane mount can do so, as they are listed under Goods and Services in the equipment chapter of the Core Rulebook. Check out Mounted Combat, and look under the Ride and Handle Animal skills for details on what they can do and how you go about that. The Ride skill can even be used untrained. ^_^

Wei, flour (or generic powder) is 1 cp (0.01 gp) per half pound, however as it is listed in Ultimate Equipment, I believe you must own that resource to buy items from it. If you are just looking for a powder you can use against invisible creatures and you don't have UE, you should be able to just buy chalk(1 cp apiece) and crush it.

Oh, mounts are good? Well, hell.

Make that a huge ol' bag of chalk (1 sp worth), and then in addition:

Sooty buckskin light horse named 'Char' (combat trained) (110gp), riding saddle (10gp), 8 days feed (4sp), leather barding (40gp) for an a total of 150 gp 5 sp and a grand total of 322 gp 5sp with the previous purchases.

If we're all going mounted, replace the mule with a light horse, not combat trained. A mule won't carry a medium rider; I assumed we'd be walking.

I do, no worries! And I trust that people won't claim supplements they don't yet have... especially now that CORE is an option. ^_~

I understand the reasoning to give folks a chance to play more.

What I don't understand is the 'How do you support your market share in a collection-based environment when you're reducing the number of resources you can sell to a target demographic?'

But that elephant aside on CORE, let's get this thing ready to rummmmmbbllleeeee...

I believe some of the thinking goes along the lines of:

Jimmy-Joe-Bob might be willing to GM if he only feels like he has to know 2 books and a small guide. Once he has GM'd a few times successfully he may be willing to 'graduate' to GM'ing the normal PFS campaign. More people willing to GM eventually leads to more games being played, more players, and more people wanting books.

Bobby-Sue-Ellen might be more willing to give the game a try if she only has to buy one book. As opposed to the masses of people that will give the impression that you absolutely must buy at least umpteen books to even begin to play the game. That get another purchase of the CRB and quite likely down the road a bunch of other books as they decide they really like the game.

Remains to be seen whether it actually works out that way or not.

Mine was *not* in good shape when I bought it, but I did get a damaged book discount for it. It will probably become a con travelling copy and a new one to be purchased at some point when finances are a bit better. So the possibility that there are others in that situation may help 'pad' those numbers.

But, admittedly, it in retrospect feels a lot more organic and has a lot more 'chunk' than its spiritual predecessors.

Honestly, I love the idea of Core for the reasons that Selter gave. It can be very daunting to NEW RPG players to sit down at a table and have only really looked at the CRB and see a Tiefling Summoner, a Tengu Gunslinger, and a Wayang Magus...and they are playing a human Fighter. You can become overshadowed really quickly and not wish to play anymore. Some GMs are good at making things very inclusive, some are not. This gives them a better fighting chance. Then, like Selter said, you graduate up. Also, its going to give me the opportunity to experience entire storylines on the same character (Blackros, Waking Rune Path, Shadow Lodge, etc).

I also have a lot of players in the area that have largely quit playing save for at cons, because they have played and run EVERYTHING. That way, they go to cons and get a 2 or 4 scenarios they can play (We have a fair number of cons in our area...usually one every other month with 20-50 tables).

I won my copy of the core book at a raffle for all the pathfinder tables at my local sci fi/fantasy/comic convention. The book totally sold me on the idea of switching to pathfinder :D.

Also, Mira is totally a responsible adult, blowing all of her hard earned cash on OHMAGAWDAPONY.

VC - Sydney, Australia

I suppose it also comes down to fellow players making things inclusive too, not so much about power levels, but that the newbie gets included and helped, rather than just being a by-blow that doesn't get included - decision making and discussion is important to get them involved in because that doesn't depend on how many books they have or what options they took, ideas and solutions (and roleplay) gets us all back to being on the same page - then the mechanics kick in and we can work with them to build a solution.

Most of the games we play (at least in our area) are still filled with Core races and core classes - about 80%, but having the variety gives us something new to explore - it seems a bit limiting to go back to the same rules set that we started with and its vanilla limitations - I loved the old core ranger, but you were limited to simply the switch hitter - which was the same build every time with a slightly different wrapper.

Anyhow, just my 0.2, as long as people are playing and having fun then it's all gravy :)

In ten years I'll play Core with a few mates and beer and pretzels while we reminisce about the old days :)

Yeah.

GenCon was a bit of an eye-opener for me last year. I'd created a tengu two-weapon fighter. After the second table, it became painfully obvious how under-powered I was in comparison to the remainder of the table, and it took a bit of fiddling and reading (and acquisition of a new tome) to get Wei to a point I felt reasonably comfortable with, and even then it has still been a bit of a learning curve.

And I'd actually acquired a lot of books for a home campaign beforehand...

If ever you cannot move your piece on the map, just narrate your action as best you can and indicate where you intend to go, like 'north of X' or something similar.

This is a reprint for the folks in Team Alpha, with an emphasis on a different section of the block text.

Diplomacy
(Cha)

You can use this skill to persuade others to agree with your arguments, to resolve differences, and to gather valuable information or rumors from people. This skill is also used to negotiate conflicts by using the proper etiquette and manners suitable to the problem.

Check: You can change the initial attitudes of nonplayer characters with a successful check. The DC of this check depends on the creature's starting attitude toward you, adjusted by its Charisma modifier. If you succeed, the character's attitude toward you is improved by one step. For every 5 by which your check result exceeds the DC, the character's attitude toward you increases by one additional step. A creature's attitude cannot be shifted more than two steps up in this way, although the GM can override this rule in some situations. If you fail the check by 4 or less, the character's attitude toward you is unchanged. If you fail by 5 or more, the character's attitude toward you is decreased by one step. Emphasis mine.
Starting Attitude Diplomacy DC
Hostile 25 + creature's Cha modifier
Unfriendly 20 + creature's Cha modifier
Indifferent 15 + creature's Cha modifier
Friendly 10 + creature's Cha modifier
Helpful 0 + creature's Cha modifier

Or, in other words, trying to help with Diplomacy in this case, even if one doesn't think they're going to be a great help -- so much as showing peaceful intent, lowering of defensive posture, etc -- can still be helpful.

I heard it was because a lot of people were trying so hard to complete their own (sometimes nearly mutually exclusive) faction missions they were failing the primary mission.

Which is probably what led to a series of missions where they beat the tenets of the Society (Explore,Report, COOPERATE!) into the character brains?

VC - Sydney, Australia

I liked the old faction set-ups, it gave one more reason to co-operate and get things done, now the factions seem pretty pointless and samey. Even when you ARE on a faction mission it isn't always explicit - and arguably easier to fail.

I haven't seen any of the newer faction missions, but I hate to leave out the old ones seeing as they often contain helpful/interesting story bits. I always post them to the Campaign Info for quick reference later.
