So... Where would you put race scenarios?

Ok, outgrowth of the civil discussion on the last thread I started about race boons.

If races were attached to specific scenarios, where would you set the scenario?

For example, a nice three part scenario starting in Absalom and going into Shadow Absalom for kayal (fetchlings), a set of scenarios in Irrisen for changelings, etc.?

Just want to see peoples' creative juices flowing.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

A nice three part scenario set entirely in Numeria for Androids!

I don't think they are appropriate to add to scenarios. Adding them to scenarios basically means everybody will have access to them, just for a select few who can't manage to play it or who manage to die/not get the boon.

Rob, I'm not asking "Is it a good idea?" I'm asking from a creative point, where would be places for such scenarios.

I think it should be tough, and require going above and beyond the normal mission. That way it's restricted to Pathfinders who really do their job well, and people who step up to GM.

I think introducing them through scenarios is a good idea on the surface, especially coupled with RDN's idea to make it tough to qualify for one. Thinking about it more, I get pessimistic. A-la the Lantern Lodge & Shadow Lodge retirement scenarios, word will quickly spread on how one may acquire the boon. All a player needs to do is buy the scenario & read the success conditions in order to get what they want. They may as well make it open access.

Well that is any scenario.

I believe Ratfolk should be added to the Rats of Round Mountain Arc, it fits really well there.

Perhaps Kobolds could be added to a multipart adventure that returns to the Sewer Dragons of Absolom at a higher level. Perhaps a Dragon is manipulating/blackmailing them to harass and attack Pathfinders, and the Pathfinders with the help of

need to get to the bottom of why and stop it.

I think it should be in a retirement arc. Complete the whole thing and you get access to a certain race featured in the scenario.

As for where, I agree Ratfolk could be accessible by a follow-up to Rats of Round Mountain, essentially making one BIG story arc to follow with one character. I would also suggest a Kitsune problem to occur in Tien Xia. Or perhaps a rash of murders of Gillmen leads to an assault on the land-faring folk, and it's up to the Society to not just broker peace, but an alliance involving including some of their number in the Society (a la foreign exchange type thing).

This is why I don't write for Paizo.

The point is because it's a problematic idea, perhaps even a bad idea, there is no such place for them. It's like asking... What's the best part of my body to dip into molten lava?

These are all great ideas.

Thanks. Maybe someone can take these ideas and run with it. Although, regardless of a race boon or not, I'd want to play that retirement arc with the Gillmen, haha.

One bit I thought of with kayal.

Spoiler:

A 5-9 where some things are missing in the Grand Lodge. The Pathfinders are tasked to find the thieves, and it culminates in a battle with a group of fetchlings. They get the second prestige for taking a prisoner.

A 7-11, more diplomatic mission. The Pathfinders venture into the Shadow Plane to track down some of the missing artifacts. They encounter not only the thieves, but a group of fetchlings wanting to flee the Shadow Plane. It becomes a bit of diplomacy across two planes as the Pathfinders must negotiate between the Grand Lodge and the fetchlings.

Another 7-11, this time the party is back into the shadow plane with a MacGuffin. Their job is to get the defecting kayal to the Prime. Think the Frostfur Captives style, with a bonus of shadow hounds and an umbral dragon!

5/5

I agree that RoRM should have a ratfolk boon. Probably if the PCs get the writ, remove the BBEG from part 1, diplomacy you know who, and dethrone that that other thing.

5/5

Man, I would love a scenario that revolved around traveling to another plane, such as the elemental plane of fire. That in itself would be awesome, and the added bonus at a shot at an ifirit or something would send it over the top.

2/5

I could see this being combined with another idea from the race thread, cycling the available additional races each year. That way instead of just having a blog post or passage in the guide to organized play indicating what races are legal to be made this year you have in an in game introduction to the race. It allows people to play as other races without opening the flood gates, so to speak.

Logistically I would imagine it would work like the faction retirement scenarios where you get the boon if played before a certain date.

I think this idea is a good one if the player played the same character in EVERY scenario for an ENTIRE season WITHOUT dying and if the player also GM'd ALL the scenarios in that season as well.

Then he should be able to get a race boon.

And this is going to be tracked how? There is a system in place to distribute what is intended to be a limited supply of race boons. It's a system designed to support conventions. not to flood PFS with a rising tide of undine, kitsune, or whatever happens to be the flavor of the month.

Some of these races should be VERY rare, and those are the kinds of boons that should be given through a charity auction.

This is true, which is why haveing only a couple or a few races available through a multipart Scenario Arc is a good means of introducing a few of the more common exotic races, will still keeping them somewhat uncommon, and keeping the more exotic races available for con boons.
