Dragon's Demand: Need GM Advice ***Spoilers, GMs only***

So my PCs have explored under the tower and have been given the task to drive the kobolds out of the flooded quarry. They have decided the kobolds caused the tower to collapse by accident because their habitat has been flooded out,(they missed every opportunity to figure out what was really going on) and they want to propose to the kobolds that they should drain Dragonfen by draining the swamp into the Verduran Fork by digging about a thousand feet of canal, crossing the Verduran Highway...Clearly this is a huge engineering feat, but the way I read the module, the Abadar faction would be in favor of such a solution, especially if it got the kobolds further away from town. I have a few questions and could use some advice. How would this play out? How long would such a canal take to dig? Could the kobold tribe handle it? And would it even work?
I would appreciate getting someone else's take on it. It's definitely an interesting idea and I certainly don't want to discourage that kind of thinking, but it's caused me a headache trying to figure the ramifications...

Way I read it, the kobolds are currently trying to regain the Dragon's favor. I do not see them accepting any humans' help for a far-fetched engineering project.

IIRC, the kobold sentries are on watch for humans' retaliation against the tower's collapse and the killing of the wizard. In such a case, as soon as they see adventurers coming by, they are likely to try to kill them and not to negotiate. If said sentries also mention that they know the PCs are there to punish the kobolds for collapsing the tower and killing the wizard, all should be back on the scenario's tracks.

This way, you can have the PCs go back to the tower and find the wizard's corpse and the keys to open the door to his tower.

I believe doing otherwise will get you VERY far from the scenario, almost making it your own personal story.

Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it will require far more work on your part and you might not get as much use out of the written adventure ;-)


Thanks for the response. They had found the wizard's corpse, but hadn't figured out that the kobolds and wizard were working together to collapse the tower. I'm not really sure how they missed that implication, but what can you do? Heh. I think you're probably right. Having the sentries spill the beans should get the PCs back on track.


Agreeing with the previous posting; given that the kobolds are trying to regain favor with the dragon, draining and destroying what it sees as it's area would probably not fly well.

I'm also running this right now. The players just got Glib and her pet when we stopped. I was thinking though, does her presence change the reactions of the other kobolds. I'm thinking the female kobold priest would at least be indifferent and not attack the party with Glib explaining that they are after the Chief. It's probably going to be an untrained Diplomacy check with the possibility of PCs assisting.
