GM To Go: What do you haul as your personal GM kit?

I want to keep my GMing as light and unencumbered as possible, but hauling stuff seems to be part and parcel of being a GM.

For every game I GM, I haul the following:

2 Medium-sized Chessex maps in their own carrying case

Paper minis (reprinted from Rich Burlew's kickstarter, monster for every season)

My iPad for:
a) Pathfinder Rulebooks
b) The Scenario I'm GMing
c) Meetup Site of our PFS group to double check RSVPs and group calendar
d) Calculator (for tier calculations or to figure out of tier gold)

My iphone for:
a) Archives of Nethys
b) Meetup if there is no wi-fi for iPad

Dice

GM bag that includes folders with:
a) Chronicle & Session Reporting Sheets
b) Faction Cards for new players
c) Welcome to Pathfinder boons
d) ITS printouts
e) Player handouts for the current mission
f) Wet erase markers
g) Ruler
h) Initiative Tracker board

This is all fairly light, and can be carried by me into a store in a single trip. But I'm still hauling tons of stuff! If I go on a plane, I'm trying to imagine without success hauling my map case.

What do you guys haul, and how do you haul it? How have you found ways to lighten your load?

Dice, Minis (though for Cons I usually use starburst, I know people like having the right thing, but I just don't have room), Scenario(s), a couple of blank maps and markers, my phone and charger, definitely a pencil and I try to have a pen. That's usually about it, if I know I have a place to plug in and wi-fi my laptop.

- Hand drawn maps on large sheets of gridded paper in a carrying tube
- A bag full of most of the physical books I own and gm screen (which is falling apart from the weight).
- 10 pencils
- Roll of paper towels
- Tackle box with miniatures and markers
- Bestiary box filled with my minis for the planned days adventures
- Laptop with various pdfs / open windows with relevant prep info from google drive
- Bag of dice
- Phone for quick rules checks... which means I can probably cease bringing that huge bag of books with me.

• Print copy of the scenario, monster stats, handouts, and chronicles
  
• Physical copy of the CRB
  
• My GM binder with most of the pregens, a copy of this season's guide, new player packets and some other things
  
• Pre-drawn maps (typically on large 1" square graph paper
  
• My dice roller tray and its set of dice
  
• A scratch pad for taking notes + pencil and/or pen
  
• A bag of Dove chocolates to serve as terrifying and delicious monsters (except the one time the monster was so big I bought a moon pie from the store's snack area...)
  
• My phone, fully charged with the masterwork tools app/using the PRD as needed
  
• If I remember - a spare power brick, fully charged

It's a lot less these days than it used to be. If it's a special event, I'll try to borrow appropriate minis from a friend who owns them or pull pawns from my sister's collection.

What I've found to be EXTRA helpful is to put together a 8.5x11 envelope once I prep a scenario and put the folded maps inside. It keeps everything compact in my bag and prevents some damage. For my Gen Con scenarios, I'll be making custom paper pawns, but those can easily be folded and put into the folders as well. These folders then go into a bin in my kitchen, so my two PFS-playing roommates and I aren't constantly printing the same scenario 4+ times.

I keep 2 small and 2 regular chessex maps in my "document tube" (~$10 at an office supply store), and then I've got my battle box. The battle box always comes along because it has all my characters, as well.

I use a rolling case (old ice chest - with a cloth cover with pockets, mesh pockets and zippered top holding more pockets and elastic tie-downs), with most of the things other people have listed...

A couple unique things I have in it that other people have not mentioned...

* scissors.
* small bottle of white glue.
* bag of 1" wooden cubes (for use as stairs, flight markers etc...)
* plastic tube of 1" poker chips (numbered) to use a generic pawns.
* bag of black construction paper squares in several sizes (2",3",4") to use as "Map covers" - toss them out to cover the map, and push them out of the way as the players reveal the map (also push them back over it as them move and the "darkness closes up behind them...")
* breath mints or cinnamon gum... yeah, enough to share!

In my backpack i keep. The adventure, an alternate adventure in case levels dont match or too many players, maps, markers, some minis, a gm screen, a reroll, pencils, and a ton of dice in a smaller bag.

Big note: have a set or at least one hard to read D20, this will remove your players desire to look at what you roll. Not that you need to cheat but it ruins the dramatics if they realize that youve been hitting because you rolled 4 19s not because the enemies are that good.

-you get bonuses for doing things that are factiony, ie Libert's edge get bonuses for FREEEDOOOOOM for freeing slaves and whatnot.

c) Dunno I imagine they have some personal boon stash.

d) Inventory tracking sheet: a sheet that you're supposed to use to keep track of items in stock and in use. It's rather unweildy if you actually use consumables.

e) Many scenarios come with letters that you are handed or find on dead bodies.

The Welcome to Pathfinder boon is a new boon that can be used on someone's first level -1 character. It can only be used on the -1 character.

Sort of a welcome gift. My understanding is that GMs can give them out at any public Pathfinder Society event. It doesn't have to be a convention or other special event.

- Small bottle of pain killers (the bag can get heavy if carried for long. :D)

Occasionally I'll also keep folders of Pregens, but lately I've been keeping them at the store so they can use them when I'm not there.

I obsess over this stuff a bit, and have spent a while distilling my bag down to exactly what I need to function as both a GM and player.

Here's my GM bag with everything that goes in it..

1. Miniatures. Primarily these are old DND 3X miniatures. I have some Reaper Bones as well, in addition to some casino coins and half dollars to represent large miniatures. You can pick most of these up on the cheap if you buy in bulk of Ebay or can make it to a larger convention like GenCon, where they sell these minis for $.50-$1 each. The box they are in is a "card organizer" flip box that originally came from Shopco I believe.

2. Pens, pencils, some petty cash (primarily for snacks), a USB drive with various PFS scenarios (for other GMs), and a small bag of my PC miniatures--just to keep them separate from the rest.

3. Condition Cards and Buff Cards. Others have mentioned these, but its worth saying again. These things are awesome. If you can only get one, grab the Condition Cards to start. They're great reminders for newer players and yourself.

4. Harrowing deck and initiative tracking cards. The harrowing deck is for a PC I used to have, but still hangs out in my bag in case someone needs it. The initiative cards are just my preferred way of organizing combat. If you've got another system, they're erroneous.

5. Dice. Three distinct sets, a boatload of D6, some hit/miss dice, and some oversized D6. The hit and miss dice have been useful time and time again, so I'd recommend grabbing one or two if the opportunity presents itself. Oversized dice serve as great height indicators, which is their primary function.

6. iPad mini, charging cable, and battery block. I made the switch to digital for my PDFs a few years ago and it was a good decision. The mini takes up hardly any space and the battery can last a full day worth of convention GMing.

7. Character sheets, boons, folio. My extra boons, current PFS characters, and whatever else I need pop into my folio/folder. With a sharpie I added some useful equations (cost of scrolls, potions, etc) and I have a printed off map of Golarion on hand to show players where their game is taking place.

8. The bag is an old Tandy laptop computer bag. I wasn't able to find the model of it online, but it fits all my stuff pretty snugly ;)

What are the hit/miss dice, Walter?

My bag varies depending on how organized I have been lately, or if it is at a con.

I will usually have a stackable sterilite set of containers with minis (and other sundry things). One tray of minis are my PCs primarily, but also have the minis for my "Workfinder" group. I'll also have my animal companion minis there. Then I will have a tray for the scenario's minis (sometimes more, depending on what I am doing).

I also have a nice big pencil bag (lost one last year, so still restocking and moving things in). That has things like pens (sharpie, dry erase in fine and chisel, and wet erase, as well as several good writing pens). I will also have some tape and superglue in there.

In my main bag (a nice thirtyone bag my wife gave, but unfortunately without personalization) I will keep my hard copy CRB (unless I flew out), the scenario and supplemental material (often in a storage clipboard), and my initiative board. Clipped to my bag will be one of those retractable key chains, which I use for sight lines.

I usually also have the condition and buff decks (the latter is far more useful), though the boxes for these are all but worn out. I carry a character folio, often lending to players at the table. Oh, and often there are a few of my characters in there.

Essential is my iPad, and I always have at least one Anker USB battery (13000 mAh and 21000 mAh) and several power cords (lightning and MicroUSB).

And dice. One paizo d20, a large purple Chessex d20, and at least 4 full sets (I think it is 6 now, even out I pruned them a while ago). And a ton of SkålCon and PFS d6s. Finally 3-4 Chessex d3s (really d6s that go 1-3 twice).

There is often other things in there, such as extra ITS sheets, pregens, the fancy tracking sheets I found on PFSprep, previously used scenarios, scratch paper, note cards, and other sundry crap.

Oh, and on my pencil bag I have all seven faction pins.

I do this with printed maps myself, but in a three-ring binder; I put the printed scenario in sheet protectors so I can track spell usage and such in the scenario but still have it usable for the next time I run it.

- Printed out copy of the scenario & chronicles
- Printed out copy of the prep from pfsprep.com, whether I created it or someone else
- Flip Mats & Map Packs, as appropriate. Most of the time they have the previous scenario still written on them and I need to remember to erase them before the scenario. (I try to draw ahead of time I swear!)

John, Tonya and Linda -- Is there any chance that the "Welcome to Pathfinder" boon can be published to GM Resources? I think that the VC-only distribution channel only works if you are in regular contact with your VCs. Minnesota Venture Officers are chatty and communicative creatures, so I got to find out about this boon. But I think that many other venue coordinators have been left out of the loop.

I usually GM PFS at home, but in the case I go elsewhere (like tomorrow we have our monthly gaming day) I take the following:

My laptop, if there there are electrical outlets in the vicinity of my table. If not, printouts of the scenario and all the other things I'd have as files on the computer.

Maps, flipmat if going any farther, Chessex Megamat if I can bother to carry it.

Markers for the maps.

Dice (kinda obvious)

Figures (I also use the OotS paper ones, they are nice and light, though do take up surprisingly much space when pre-assembled).

Extra props if the scenario made me want to make some. Such as small bottle with bright colored liquid for Sun Orchid Scheme and stuff like that.

Chronicles, handouts, other paper stuff such as pregens if running low tier.

The laptop is the heaviest part, otherwise I travel kinda lightly.

That's quite a lot actually. I can fit it all in my backpack, but it is quite heavy. I don't really mind though.

Usually, if it is limiting like that, it lists that restriction on the boon...

I'm glad this got submitted, and hopefully we'll see a public announcement. I just told my VL about this, and he's not thrilled that this was released publicly. Said it's not supposed to be, and he hadn't heard otherwise. I think everyone will rest easier once we see the official okay.
