Long Distance Gaming

Two players in our four player group have moved half way across the country. They want to keep playing, so we're trying to come up with ideas of how to make that happen.

Everyone has android devices, so we're thinking a combination of Skype and Google Drive may be the easiest way.

I'm asking for suggestions from folks who use these tools for long distance gaming successfully to share what's worked, what hasn't, or what other suggestions you may have that we haven't thought of.

While we have lap tops and tablets on our end, they are limited to their smartphones, so screen size is an issue on their end.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly, when we had a player in Paris (she's back in Seattle now) we just used Skype and a good webcam to show her the board, as everyone else was physically there. It seemed to work for us. I've toyed around with various programs to do it, but there is this whole I work 40 hours a week and didn't have the time to fully use the services.

they arent going to have computers of any kind? Because I'd recommend using a virtual tabletop like roll20.net (there are a bunch out there some free and some not). Roll 20 has integrated chat, but you could use skype if thats your preference. But the virtual tabletop will be a necessity so that you can interact with things together on a 'map', and the dm can easily share images and such.

Google Hangouts.

my group's been using skype and a google docs spreadsheet with square cells for battles. It's worked really well for us so far, but the we all have laptops, so I'm not sure how well google docs would work on a phone... One other thing to keep in mind with skype is that your audio connection may be better for anyone with bad internet connections if you can avoid using cameras

I thought google hangouts was basically just a texting program. What other features does it have that would be useful for gaming?

They don't have computers of their own right now. Their roommate has one they use sometimes, but they're not sure if they can use it for gaming like this. I'll check out roll20.net, thanks!

Google Hangouts has video with multiple parties. If you've watched any of the DND playtest on youtube those were done on Google Hangouts(I used it on my phone to talk to family while I was deployed).

What system(s) do you play? Because if they dont have access to a computer, I'd strongly recommend going 'gridless' which will require some adjustment if you are playing something very tactical like dnd or pathfinder, but would be easier with certain more cinematic games.

We don't use battlemats if that's the question. We use minis to help with a sense of where we're standing in relation to the bad guys and each other, but rules system is a home brew, heavily modified version of 2nd ed AD&D.

I just came across this kickstarter. Might be just what you are looking for.

I put a link to the playsets kickstarter up and you may want to take a peek at that. Think they plan to release early next year and it looks like a useful 3 dimensional playmat. Also the base looks free and fully usable. I will probably throw them a couple dollars just because I like what they are doing.
