8. Players who let others talk them out of playing really good characters just because its not optimized
9. Players who think an unoptimized character is a bad character
10. Women who ware low cut tops and short skirts and complain when men look at them
11. Paying more for fair trade products
12. People who fly away for a holiday then never see outside of the hotel bar

Things I don't get:

-Fancy decor: No thank you, I got utilitarian creature comforts. I don't need fancy pots, pieces of art, weird colors on my walls or 'artifacts'. Closest I'll get to this is my minis, which I still keep hidden and out of sight in a cupboard. When I get in my room, my eyes drag me to my TV to which my consoles and my PC are connected to, everything else is white noise...made noisier if it stands out.

-People letting hypocrisy get to them: I'm a hypocrite, get over it. Some of the people you'll meet in life? Also hypocrites, get over it. I remember a buddy of mine of who watched a movie that was anti-drugs where the main actor was a guy who does heavy drugs, he just couldn't let it go...entirely. It bugs you? Guess what, the hypocrites (myself included) don't care....actually it's kind of entertaining to watch you squirm (Icyshadow mentioned hypocrisy, I just want to make it clear I don't mean this message for him or anyone else in this thread, this is just literally I something I just don't get).

-People who hate peoples (not people, peoples) they've never met: I've never met a guy from China, you've only spotted some uncouth Chinese guys from a distance, you're seriously making a judgement on a race of people of whom you've seen less than 0.01% of?

-Why people don't de-claw cats they intend on keeping entirely within the house.

-People who keep cats entirely within the house.

-People who keep cats.

From what I've heard, de-clawing is both painful and harmful to a cat.

Animal abuse is added to my list of things that I just don't get.

Sovereign Court

I don't get griefers. I don't understand people who derive pleasure from rage and frustration of others. For those people, i wish that assault and battery were legal.

Well, there's no simple answer to this and I've been up all night, but I'll try to explain the basics as I remember them.

<snip>

Ah-ha! So the published prices are what they are actually selling for right now, and not some estimation of worth based upon company value/performance? Got it!!! Thank you :D

I thought that was self-evident. They are products for which the producers got paid a fair price. That means that all the cheaper stuff you can buy is produced by exploited people.

I understand how so called fair trade works but I'm not being charged more because the company is trying to protect there suppliers.
I'm being charged more so the company can protect there profit margin ,
if they want to pay a higher price to there suppliers then good for them I'm in favour of that but why can't they swallow the extra cost themselves.
Then they would be being fair to both the suppliers and there customers

Cause that's a good way to go out of business by spending more than you earn.

I can attempt to answer this. Straight men like to see hot women. Two hot women are better then one hot woman. And if they do something erotic, even better.
That's the "1+1=2" argument.

Cereal boxes are a legitimate source for learning spelling? I guess now I know how to spell words like kix, trix, chex, froot, krave, and krispy.

There ARE people with the last name Kellog with one G, by the way. I just looked it up in the white pages.

getting pineapple on pizza right is a bit of a crapshoot. You have to cook the pineapple enough with the cheese and sauce to release enough acidity or something, I think.

Heh. The only time I even get to see any fancy decor is if I'm playing The Sims, and those little buggers keep setting fire to it so often that I can only assume it comes pre-soaked in gasoline. I think I'm safer with my cheap furniture!

She said something like "How can you not know that? You work with computers!"

What, so I'm supposed to know everything about everything computerized, right down to every oven timer?

I asked again "So am I dialing the hours and minutes, or the minutes and seconds?"

She never answered me. She just kept on with her garbage about me and computers.

Another time, a couple of other people mentioned, in a casual conversation, the website Lulu. I said "What's that?" They said "What's your job again? You work with... what again?"

Again, I repeated the question. Again, I only got garbage. One of the people gave me a long, condescending lecture about what the internet was. He seemed to think he was being funny. I had to look the site up on the web myself just to find out what Lulu was.

So it seems that my being a computer programmer means that I'm supposed to know about every website out there too. <continues ranting>

Oh yeah. I thought of another example. Once, at my place of work, before our time-sheet system got automated and we did it all with pen and paper, the secretary accidentally gave me my office-mate's time-sheet, and vice versa. We completed our time-sheets before the mistake was discovered. The secretary said "You're both computer programmers! How could you not have noticed such a mistake?!?"

Apparently, she thought that computer programmers don't notice mistakes. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, as you are made painfully aware every time you have to deal with a bug in a program you're trying to use.

Yea I work in Software Quality Assurance. I can tell you for certain, computer programmers miss mistakes. All the time. I wouldnt have a job if they didnt.

And I'm in your boat. I work in the software industry and any time there is a computer problem, they expect me to have the answer or are baffled if I have a computer problem.

I tend to respond with, 'Thats true, just how you are good at cooking steaks, and therefore can troubleshoot issues arising from raising cattle right?'.

I think the published sale value of a share is the price if the LATEST such transaction, not the average. I may be wrong.

Pineapple on pizza is a treat... The thing is, you need the rest of the pizza to be brutally spicy for it to work well. Piri piri, chili and such makes the taste sing. Trust me.

Fair trade coffee is a sinister story. Say the production companies sell it for twice the cost of non-fair trade coffee. Out price should also be twice normal, right? No. When you buy coffee in a cafe or wherever, the price of the coffee is actually a very minor part of the cost. Most of it is paying the salary for the barrista. So... With double the profit per cup, minus the slight extra cost of the coffee... Yeah. Just look for "all our coffee is fair trade", and you'll know.

That's a different story. I was thinking about buying a packet of coffee in the supermarket. I'm not an idiot who buys overpriced coffee in some supposedly hip coffee shop. Of course you get ripped off there.

Although I bet the barrista's salary is not the biggest part. They don't get paid much.

Still more than the coffee. But you are right. You also have to pay for the cafe and so on. Same thing there. You pay twice, but the cafe isn't twice as nice.

I just don't get why people insist on playing the most conservative option from a huge constellation of role-playing games — all of which deserve your entertainment dollar — and then complain that it lacks the features one expects of a progressive, modern RPG experience.

It's like paying top dollar for an antique car and bemoaning its lack of cruise control and anti-lock brakes.

I know ToZ likes to answer me with "because it is the most popular game with the most players" ... but that's not reason enough, dig?

I see what you mean. For some people, it's a question of playing something that they believe will still be around in a few years time and not gone the way of the dodo. For others, it can be knowing theres ongoing support and the company isn't going to ditch it and move on after doing a corebook, GM screen, and two adventures. That player thing really does matter too, if you're looking for a group or for something the scale of PFS to join.

It's perhaps more a case of what you really wanted was the antique car, but the fuel and spare parts for it aren't readily available so you made do with a mainstream model instead.

Oh, plus there's a really nifty set of seat covers that'll fit the new mainstream one perfectly.

I've tried other games before. (Warhammer Fantasy RPG is on my shelf.) I should try more. (Castles and Crusades is also on my shelf.)

But my Austin group was "D&D-or-nothing." Maybe with my new group I can try something different, but as we often spar about, a GM with no players can't run anything.

The catch, ToZ, is that you don't complain about the game, you embrace it for what it is. And I'll bet you enjoy it more because of that.

If they turn out to be the same, you could try going with various d20 spinoffs in an attempt to slowly wean them away.

"Look, it's still D&D really! Its just got different character classes and some weird weapons!"

"This one next, it's got alternate combat rules, but the rest is just the same game we always play!"

"No magic in this one, but it's got this other system that replaces it. Same game underneath though!"

"Guys, hate to break it to you, but we stopped playing D&D months ago. You didn't notice?"

I play D&D/Pathfinder because it has a huuuuuge amount of support. You can find a lot of pre-made spells, classes, NPCs, adventures and such. When I was much younger, I player Fantasy Hero. I liked the system better, but it only had a msall number of "canned" spells or modules. You had to create most of the supplementary material yourself - a major pain.

I tried alternate systems such as Burning Wheel, Role Master, Traveller, Gamma World and Mage/Vampire/etc, but they never caught on with my gaming group. Fantasy Hero was the longest-lived campaign, but the game died out because running it required too much effort.

In addition to the lack of support materials, it is difficult to get other people in a gaming group to invest time in somthing new when they have spent so much learning the complex rules of the system they are using. I have found that as I (and my friends) get older, we don't have the time to learn an entirely new gaming system.

For me it's that D&D/PF is what I've sunk my money into and I don't have anything else, nor interest in spending said money on anything else.

Maybe if I'd gotten started on something else, but as it stands now I'm happy with what I have, and can adjust as I need.

It's a shame that some of the good stuff is the old stuff....and BECAUSE it's the old stuff, no one/few will touch it (planescape/fallout 1 & 2 anyone?).

Ah...he was talking about TTRPG (I keep reply window open for long periods :P), in THAT case, I hate modern, progressive stuff. Give me the taste and feel of the old stuff anyday (I've never actually played 1e/2e, but the handbook for swords and wizardry promises so much).

I mostly like my bed frame for hanging clothes over the end. And my cat likes hiding under there.

Storage, mainly.

Easier to get out of a raised bed, too.

Lastly, if you develop any kind of pest problem, it's a bummer to have rats/centipedes/roaches in bed with you. This is more of a medieval reason though.

I've yet to understand why I hear so many DM/Group horror stories here. I'm beginning to think I've simply lucked out, and have the perfect group.

I don't get how someone can claim to be charitable, but freak out any time the slightest donation is asked for.

I don't get how partying with two dozen people is 'fun'.

I still don't understand why the wrestling team in High School all those years ago would call me gay, when I was part of the Ballroom Dance team, all those many years ago. I held beautiful women close to me. They grappled with other men in leotards.

I don't get people who can function, and be perfectly happy, with only 4 hours of sleep a night.

I don't get people.

I don't get why people think I must be lonely because of this.

The male fascination with Female on Female.

Try evolutionary biology for an answer. Part of your brain doesn't know they're a TV or magazine, so as far as it knows there's two girls 10 feet away from you that aren't objecting to your presence... which means you might be able to join in and mate with BOTH of them, which is the only thing better for your genes than just mating (which is itself an incredibly strong drive)

I don't get people who resort to insults when they run out of proper ways to defending their claim. As someone who's been to two debate contests (one which I won, and another where our team got second place), I usually end up disappointed when the people I debate with online ALWAYS resort to fallacies by the end, whether it be strawmen, shifts of the goalpost or ad hominem. Then again, it might just be the fact that I'm trying to debate on good DM policy on the internet that is the real problem.
