Suppress Charms and Compulsions - Do charmed allies get a save?

After a particularly harrowing experience in "The Hellknight's Feast," I'm considering starting to use the spell suppress charms and compulsions.

It's marked as "Will negates (harmless)", which ususally means you don't have to worry about saving throws. But if you're casting it on a charmed or dominated ally, are they required to attempt to save against it?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A charmed or dominated character truly, inwardly, in his individual will, wants to get out of the effect, even if his conscious mind thinks otherwise. He takes Will saves against the controlling effect, or in this case doesn't take one against an effect that counters it, regardless of the enchanter's wishes or commands.

@Starglim, I'm nto sure if thats RAW, but thats how I'd play it.

Otherwise having a high save and failing on a one to the charm or compulsion only to resist all magical attempts to remove it due to high saves would be a prtty big drawback.

The spell is usually beneficial, not harmful, but a targeted creature can attempt a saving throw if it desires.

Since the creature is under a compulsion, it would try to resist the suppression only if directed to by the compulsion--and the attempt to save might provoke a new saving throw against the original compulsion effect, depending on the spell in question.

Villain: *dominate person* AM BARBARIAN, kill your friends!
AM BARBARIAN: *fails save* BWAR AM KILL MY FRIENDS
Ally: *suppress charms and compulsions* I know you're in there somewhere fight!
Villain: *spellcraft* Oh no you don't! AM BARBARIAN, don't listen to him! Kill your friends!
AM BARBARIAN: *gets new save against dominate person at +2, but flubs it* OW HEAD HURT GRRR
Villain: Mwahahahaa!
AM BARBARIAN: *fails save a third time, this time against suppress charms and compulsions* GGGHHHHAAAH NO U *RAGELANCEPOUNCE*

True, but I feel like most spell casting villain characters (and remember our characters are smarter and more imersed in the world than we are as players) would probaly know to something to the effect of "resist any spells I don't cast on you". So I feel like if there was an option to force a resist it would be in play.

I just don't know all the mind control spells that would allow you to attempt to direct someone like that, and it seems pretty case specific.

Still, I very much like your example.

Bump. Any other insights?

In my mind, it will depend on the charm/compulsion. For instance, hold person is a compulsion, and the victim would definitely let SCaC through! Suggestion might make you do something bad, but it doesn't change your loyalties, so I don't think your suggestion'd ally would resist your spell. Dominate person? I think a dominated ally who is now compelled to kill his teammates would probably resist their spells as they know said spells would hinder their ability to carry out the order they're compelled to follow. Thus, I imagine a dominated ally would get a save against SCaC.

YMMV, but in the meantime, I'm gonna start prepping protection from evil instead of just carrying scrolls, so that the duration will be sufficient for a preemptive buff. I'll probably pick up some pearls to go with it.
