Several Questions

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Been running a few games solo and a few questions came up. Want to get some clarification before I break it out with a group again.

1. Sajan. Can someone explain, again, how his combat ability works?

When you attempt a combat check without playing a weapon, you may use your Dexterity die instead of your Strength die.

So does the Amulet of Mighty Fists trigger BECAUSE it's still a "Strength" check, or because it's a Melee combat check? I know it triggers, but I want to know why.

Basically, does the Blessing of Gorum, OR the Blessing of Erastil add 2 dice to his combat checks? Do they both? Do they recharge like normal?

2. Valeros and the Dogslicer. Valeros recharges weapons when playing them. The dogslicer says: If any d6 rolled for this weapon is a 1, count it as a 3, then discard this card. That's not exactly playing the weapon.

Does Valeros recharge the dogslicer if he rolls a 1 on one of these d6's?

3. Solo play with Erylium. When playing solo, or if you're the only character at a location, are you forced to encounter a Wrathful Sinspawn henchman before the combat with Erylium?

When I first read it, I got the impression that it meant another character, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

1. It's some where in the FAQ that Sajan can still use the Amulet because it is still a Melee check, just with the DEX die instead of the STR die.

2. The discard would be the continuation of the playing of the card so yes, he should be able to recharge instead.

3. Yes, you have to encounter a Sinspawn first, then Erylium.

1. Sajan's power converts your normally Strength-based melee combat check to a Dexterity one. Other than that it's still a normal melee combat check.

So Blessing of Erastil is the one you want, Mike confirmed it.

2. I should think so, since in order to roll the d6, you have to have used the weapon's power, right?

3. Dunno here, haven't cracked open the adventure deck yet.

Ok, I just read through the FAQ. I found the bit with Sajan which clears up some things. It also clears up some things for the Amulet of Mighty Fists as well.

I think you guys are wrong on the Dogslicer question, though. Discarding it isn't intentional, so it shouldn't recharge. That's what I think, anyways.

Does Valeros recharge the dogslicer if he rolls a 1 on one of these d6's?

Unofficially:

My team doesn't see any reason Valeros can't recharge a discarded Dogslicer. The wording is very similar to Cure, and if we had a character that said "Recharge any spell you play," we would allow that character to recharge Cure.

I'm not saying I couldn't be talked out of this, but it sure seems like a workable card combo to me.

You have to play the card to trigger the first power; the fact that the first power can trigger the second power doesn't change the fact that you played it. All Valeros's power cares about is that you played it, and that ultimately you would be discarding it after that play.

In a hypothetical situation, though, imagine that the Dogslicer's second power told you to *banish* it. If you had *discarded* it to power up the first power, and then rolled the 1, you could no longer use Valeros's recharge power, since it explicitly says "instead of discarding," and at that point, you'd be banishing it.

Now I'm really confused. Followed it all until Vic chimed in.

Weird, because Vic and I are saying the same thing.

Brain fade. I read his second paragraph to say it WAS a hypothetical situation, not that he was hypothesizing a new situation. Now that I'm properly reading it (sorry) as it's written and not "It's a hypothetical situation though..." No excuse, just eyes playing tricks on me. That second paragraph is useful as it shows a way Valeros' power might be overcome.

I really like the depth of this game. It captures the cooperative spirit of the RPG shockingly well, and is just so much more fun than any other CCG I've tried. It's what Spellfire should have been back in the WOTC days.

Ok, great. The dogslicer is a great card for Valeros to keep in his deck early on, then. Thanks for getting back to me.

Hi there. I have a follow up question on #3. If we fail to defeat the summoned henchman, can we still fight the villain?

Thanks!

I don't have the cards in front of me, but what you must be looking for is : do you need to encounter it, or defeat it.

If you need to encounter a monster before you can do something, then the outcome of the encounter is not important.

If you need to defeat a monster before you can do something, then if you fail to defeat, you can't do what you wanted to do.

It's also important to note that some monster are not defeated unless you beat a check AND a particular condition is met (ie have a certain trait). So in a case like that, you'd have to sucessfully defeat (with special conditions) the monster.

(I'm assuming you're talking about Erylium here.)

Yes, you still encounter Erylium regardless of the outcome of the Wrathful Sinspawn encounter.
