Read Seeker of Secrets or PFS Primer. Ask your Venture-Captain more questions.

That's certainly an opinion.

The Exchange 3/5

"Like the evolution of many aspects of one's life, priorities often shift and change as one's goals are achieved. As it is not my intent to place words in the mouth's of others, I shall speak only of my own evolution."

"My mastery of matters arcane has grown to rival, and in some cases surpass, the very Runelords of old Thassilon. When one can literally forge new planes of existence with their power, or unmake nearly any enemy, I found that my perception of reality changed to accommodate. Matters that were once of great concern to me, such as personal safety and political influence, are now certainties that bear only cautious maintenance."

With a confident, if somewhat arrogant smile upon his face:

"Of all those aspects of myself which have become greater through the journey I have walked, I can honestly say that none please me more so than the freedom of speech one acquires upon ascension to such reality altering power. An apprentice must choose his or her words with great care, less they attract the ill will one of one their physical, social, or magical greater. Now? I am free to speak as plainly as a I care, secure in my knowledge that there are few beings capable of posing true threat to me, and fewer still who are capable yet would gamble their own existence to try. As for these "lists" other have arranged? This revelation of speech shall lead to me sharing my own, and with precious few concerns for how the Decemvirate (though in fairness, my position is fairly favorable to their agenda) or others care to appraise them."

1). Maintaining cosmic power and continuing to ascend. I have grown far too accustomed to relinquish now.

2). Preventing others who are not of sound mind and spirit from attaining like power. New tyrants the like of Runelords we need not.

3). Acquiring and sealing away dangerous relics and artifacts which could lead to wide scale disaster in the wrong hands. Whatever else we may disagree upon, I find myself perfectly aligned with the Society in this regard.

4). Protecting innocent lives from the malice of beings stronger than they.

5). Aiding the Society and Qadira in their political and monetary agendas as best I am able. They have taken effort to shelter me when I was of in need of such a boon, and I shall see the favor returned as long for as I am able.

The Society, in my opinion, is a great career start for many characters, but certainly suits a more flexible character type (mercenary) than a rigid one (priest). Jobs often require action outside the comfort zone, and soldiers know this all too well. So is the Society.

Pogrist is my first of hopefully many Pathfinder Society characters, but I don't see a "it's just science!" necromancer having moral issues with missions, so long as the deciemverate and Osirion continue to endorse and legitimize his "field research".

Be insulted if you want. Not sure how suggesting anyone read a few books, ask a few in-game questions of the Venture-Captain, or ask questions on a messageboard is an insult, but so be it.

There is unfortunately a very significant difference between the Society described in the various books and the Society actually encountered in play.

The Society encountered in play tolerates a great many people with far worse problems than divided loyalties.

It also has many people in positions of power who seem to go out of their way to make its agents distrust the Society.

My characters are just reacting appropriately to the reality they see.

They all have their reasons for being in the Society and the Society has its reasons for keeping them as members. But loyalty to the Society is pretty much for chumps :-)

Having read Seekers of Secrets, the Pathfinder Society Field Guide, and the Pathfinder Society Primer, all for my preparations of The Moonscar, the best I can gather is that the Decemvirate's motives are entirely unclear. This is very fitting of a Paizo product, because the GM can decide what the motives of the group's shadowy leaders actually are in order to fit his campaign.

The best description I can give from my reading mirrors the campaign's front page. The Society is "a legendary league of explorers, archaeologists, and adventurers dedicated to discovering and chronicling the greatest mysteries and wonders of an ancient world beset by magic and evil," whose members are dedicated to "seeking fortune and glory all over the face of Golarion. At the same time, [each] character works for one of the competing factions, all with their own motivations and secret agendas."

Doesn't exactly sound like a loyalty-inspiring organization. The motives of the PCs in this thread are entirely appropriate for a campaign where the PCs are assumed to be fortune-hunters and glory-seekers who all happen to belong to a loosely-organized adventuring club as well as a competing faction with its own motivation and secret agenda.

Oh wow, I like this thread. It's interesting how few characters have the Pathfinders in 1st place. Even my Grand Lodge Flagbearer had Desna come in first, since he is a cleric and all. But then I suppose that not everyone was born to be an agent of the Decemvirate...

Anyway, to add some data with (somewhat) active characters:

Kotyk the Kraken, CN Tengu Rogue/Barbarian 12, Sczarni

1. The Attaining of Shinies
2. The Sczarni: Fellow Seekers of Shinies
3. The Pathfinders: Those Who Provide Adventures to Places with Shinies
4. Abadar: He Who Builds Cities Where Rogues May Thrive and Find Shinies
5. The Junior Pathfinder Society: Who else is gonna teach these kids about shinies?

Dakshi Summa Khan, Hermean Recruiter, CG Barbarian 3, Grand Lodge

1. Showing Golarion the folly of their petty mortal laws compared to the great majesty of the golden dragon Mengkare.
2. The Pathfinder Society, for allowing Dakshi to travel to new and excited places and find those who would benefit from Mengkare's wisdom
3. Showing off his physical prowess so others will realize the enormous potential of those who grow up in service to the great Mengkare.

Vex the Mongrel, CN Tiefling Alchemist (Beastmorph/Mindchemist) 7, Sczarni
1. The Sczarni, who brought Vex in and gave him purpose.
2. The Pathfinders, who send him forth to do all sorts of fun things.
3. Knowledge.
4. Creating equality between surface dwellers and non-evil subterranean folk.
5. Explosions.

(All my lawful characters have been retired as "not enough fun.")

Yep. Basically the Pathfinder Society is an employer, and really doesn't have the most inspiring PR department* or management structure**. It shouldn't be surprising that people are using the Society as a gateway to other opportunities. I mean, I can imagine how I would feel if I had a job where seven different bosses ordered me around why shady CEO's are off doing who knows what. Trying to compare the Society to a modern day business setting only leads me to terrible comparisons***.

The Decemvirates motives are CANONICALLY unclear.

Field Guide: The ultimate goals of the
Decemvirate are inscrutable, and not even
the venture-captains understand the full
picture of what the Pathfinder Society does with
the information it collects.

No one outside the Decemvirate knows
their membership or how (and if ) new members are chosen,
though rumors and speculation run rampant. Indeed, the
very methods by which the Decemvirate administers the
lodge are poorly understood and seemingly contradictory

So, I put together the "list" of OOC goals (slick post by Lormyr doing it in-character, if I were able to use aliases I might have tried that with my -01, Filraen) for each PC. Its interesting that I too find the Society lower on my priorities list than I expected out of most PCs. In fact, none of my PCs put the Pathfinders at the top. Spoilered because I have ten PCs when you count GM credit blobs, and that ate up too much page.

The List:
Venture-Captain Filraen Ghaun Male elf fighter/wizard/Eldritch Knight (Cheliax, -01)
1) Destroying the Aboleth empire that laid waste to Azlant and threatens all of Golarion.
2) The well-being of the companions with whom he adventured for the majority of his career as a Pathfinder.
3) Protecting the Mordant Spire.
4) Self-sufficiency.
5) Proving the value of extraplanar allies regardless of origin to his kin from the Mordant Spire.
6) Amassing personal power in order to facilitate #1 - #5 (Filraen’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
7) Repaying a perceived debt to Zarta Dralneen for his opportunity to rise among the Pathfinder Society.
8) Protecting and facilitating the success of active Society field agents not covered under #2.
9) Limiting the influence of the Decemvirate on the Pathfinder Society.

Signifer Lucy Henderthane, female half-elf Summoner (Cheliax, -03)
1) Self-preservation (Lucy’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
2) Amassing personal power.
3) Her brother, Alastor.
4) Restoring House Henderthane to its former glory prior to the Henderthane Incident (as depicted in the Council of Thieves Adventure Path).
5) The wellbeing and interests of the Empire of Cheliax.
6) The wellbeing and interests of the Order of the Gate.

Signifer Alastor Henderthane, male aasimar Oracle (Cheliax, -04)
1) His sister, Lucy (they’re modeled after the Lannisters with 100% less incest).
1) The divine will of the Godclaw.
3) The orders of his superior Hellknights.
4) The orders of his superiors within the Chelish social hierarchy (Alastor’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
5) The goals of the Pathfinder Society.
6) The orders of the Decemvirate.
7) The orders of the Venture-Captains.
8) Helping all the peoples of Golarion to find their ideal place in the Godclaw’s hierarchy.
9) Expanding the laws of Cheliax, and thus the divine will of the Godclaw, across the Inner Sea and eventually all of Golarion.
10) Restoring House Henderthane to its former glory prior to the Henderthane Incident (as depicted in the Council of Thieves Adventure Path).

Lacy Petticoats, female human Bard (Sczarni, -05)
1) Becoming famous (Lacy’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
2) Amassing wealth (note: not power, wealth).
3) Marrying a rich, handsome gentleman of high social standing who will elevate her to the status of a proper aristocrat of a nation that truly matters in the world, like Taldor or Cheliax.
4) Becoming the most sought after leading lady in all of Chelish opera in order to accomplish #3.
5) The interests of the Pathfinder Society.

Iorden of Longacre, male dhamipr Fighter/Alchemist/Magus (Shadow Lodge -> undetermined, -06)
1) Protecting the companions with whom he spent the majority of his career.
2) Hunting down and killing Tancred Desimire (a goal Iorden can never fulfill, as he is 12th level, but one he still has).
3) Preserving his own right to self-determination.
4) Helping others overcome external threats to their lives and livelihoods.
5) The goals and interests of some of the Venture-Captains, including Ambrus Valsin, Sheila Heidmarch, Jorsal of Lauterbury, and his mentor Filraen (Iorden’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
6) Opposing the Thrune government in Cheliax.
7) The unmasking or the complete dissolution of the Decemvirate.
8) Achieving change in the leadership structure of the Pathfinder Society, particularly among the more inept Venture-Captains (see: Drandle Dreng).

Harmandar Ghorbas, male human Wizard/Bloatmage (Qadira, -07)
1) The accumulation of material wealth (Ghorbas’ primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
2) Amassing magical power in order to facilitate #1.
3) Growing his burgeoning distribution network of mass-produced magical items and alchemical wares in order to accomplish #1.
4) The interests of the Qadiran faction, who are best situated to help him accomplish #3, and by extension #1, with the least amount of fuss.
5) The Pathfinder Society, because nothing says, “Advertising campaign!” like the discovery of a new potion recipe or magical item by Pathfinders in a long-lost tomb.
6) Consuming everything edible that passes within the ever-diminishing reach of his stubbly, bloated arms.
7) Protecting, “The boy,” because training a new one to carry things and wash under his flaps would be terribly expensive.

Alexandra de Velan, female human Paladin (Taldor, -08)
1) Spreading the divine love of Shelyn.
2) Undoing the Worldwound (Al’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
3) Protecting the soldiers who fight demons in the Worldwound.
4) The interests of the Pathfinder Society, who are clearly like-minded individuals of good character and strong moral compass.
5) The interests of Taldor, her native land, whose rulers are misguided but whose goals are righteous and laudable.
6) Using her position as a Pathfinder and (soon, once she plays a game again and can spend PP) Taldan noble to restore Taldan leadership to the righteous path of Law and Good.

Xiao-Xiao!, indeterminate gender wayang Witch (Lantern Lodge -> Osirion, -09)
1) Exploring and cataloguing the contents of this strange, bright world that hurts to look at too closely because it is too stinking bright and lacks good hiding places (Xiao-Xiao!’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
2) The interests of the now defunct Lantern Lodge for all their help cataloguing this strange new world full of… you call it, “sunlight?” Awful stuff.
3) The interests of Osirion, Xiao-Xiao!’s adopted home after the Lantern Lodge shut its doors and became too good for a poor, simple wayang who just wanted to eye protection during the parts of the day with the floating, permanent fireball of eye pain.
4) Creating goodwill between the wayang people and the other races of Golarion by sharing ancient wayang wisdom with the other, foolish races that embrace being seen all the time for some nonsensical reason.

Limas Edward Gheed, male human Thassilonian Specialist (Sczarni, -10)
1) Escaping the influence of “the family”.
2) Unearthing and mastering the arcane secrets of ancient Thassilon (Gheed’s primary reason for joining the Pathfinder Society).
3) Resurrecting ancient Thassilon, this time with an emperor who understands how to use (and abuse) power.

Ibrahim Valdimar, male human Inqvisitor (Silver Crusade, -11)
1) Protecting the common folk of Ustalav from ze depredations of ze demons of the Vorldvound (Ibrahim’s primary reason for joining the Socciety).
2) Hunting ze veetches who plague his home village and putting a stop to their evil.
3) The Pathfinder Society, whose actions are protecting everyone (including the common folk of Ustalav, see #1) from ze demons of ze Vorldvound.

I observed during this exercise that with one exception (-06), the PCs who were GM credit blobs for most or all of their careers have very few goals, four or less. The ones who have played multiple sessions tended to have 6+ objectives, with one exception (-09). I also observed that less than half of my PCs actually put the goals of the Society on the list as a separate interest. I have a theory as to why that is, as well.

While the Society might spend three years training these people, short of indoctrination all that training and loyalty will evolve based on the experiences those characters have during their careers. As I worked through my lists, I found that the more I'd played a particular character the less interested they were in obeying the Ten unquestioningly. Their experiences during their adventuring careers add new priorities and change existing ones, give them competing interests that they likely did not start their careers with. For example, my -01 PC Filraen would have put the entire Society somewhere in around #4 when he first started adventuring (behind the Aboleths, the Mordant Spire, and self-sufficiency). Now, as a result of what he’s “lived” since then, his priorities have evolved. Alexandra, my -08, has a different outlook because her experiences are primarily Season 4 and Season 5, where the Society was taking a decidedly more Good bent to their actions, and she changes her perspective accordingly because, in her experience, their outlook matches hers.

I believe the reason that’s the case is that each PC joins the Society for a reason, and at least in the case of my own it is not because they grew up dreaming of being a Pathfinder. A separate goal that the Pathfinder Society or their activities facilitate the accomplishment of provides the impetus to join the Society, and the PC’s loyalty to the Society grows or wanes depending on experiences as a member of the Society during scenarios and how those experiences align with that character’s goals and world view. Finding characters who fit the Society mold should not be about, “Does this character place the Society high on his or her list of priorities?” but rather, “Does this character’s list of priorities match up with the stated or unstated (because they’re not always the same) priorities of the Society and its leaders?” Out of my ten PCs (sigh… that number is kind of disgusting), I have at least six that fit that bill and two others who did at the start of their careers, even though they would never frame their thoughts as, “I want to do what the Decemvirate wants because the Decemvirate wants it!” because that would be a downright strange way to think.

This series of replies is hilarious. I suggest everyone google Stephen Fry and Offended. Then, come back here and stop trying to read things into people's text that to any other rational human being simply aren't there. BUT, if you still see those things, perhaps instead of assuming they exist, perhaps one could ask something as simple as, "is this what you're trying to say?"

That's what I've always thought. Its a big part of why I have trouble making a character who's loyal to the decemvirate themselves, and by extension to the society. At best I have comrades and Job security on the list, but actually having loyalty to something I don't know anything about is a little rough and I haven't made a character with that sort of dedication or characterization yet.

Well, now that Arkos has posted about Kotyk, I really should post about his good friend and wearer of many shinies...

Lady Gabrielle d'Apcher, Taldan Aristocrat

There's really not much to say here. Lady Gabrielle is quite obviously a dedicated friend and trustworthy confidante, whose ideals are perfectly-suited for such an accomplished member of the Pathfinder Society. The Chronicles she has penned on the Society's behalf more than prove her unquestionable loyalties to the organization and to the friends she has made within it, whom she definitely places as high as she would her family. There is absolutely no reason at all for anyone to ever suspect that this lovely and upstanding lady would have a priority list anything like this one...

1) Lady Gabrielle d'Apcher, including her own health, wealth, and comfort.
2) The acceptance, admiration, and respect of her friends, allies, and others around her.
3) The rescue and reclamation of the March of Margeride from its spiraling debts.
4) The acquisition of her family's titles for herself.
5) The placement of the Empire of Taldor, as well as Margeride, on a path of prosperity, regardless of whether Eutropia or someone else takes the throne.
6) Ensuring that the Empire of Taldor faces a smooth transition with the passing of Stavian III.
7) Her quiet exit from the day-to-day influences of the Pathfinder Society, and away from all the murder.
8) The preparation of the Empire, the nation of Andoran, and the Inner Sea for the inevitable conflict with Cheliax.
9) The Empire's acquisition of the city of Absalom.
10) The health, well-being, and continued happiness of the friends and allies she has made over her adventures. She might have priorities, but she does have a heart as well.

I'm sure there are others. Fine tea and well-made clothes, for example. Who wouldn't want a vial of sun orchid elixir? However, there is one other motivation, befitting of someone who has experienced the adventures she has, is overarching, does not fit very well in a rank-order, and has everything to do with loyalty to the Society...

X) Limits on the power of the Decemvirate. What has been seen cannot be unseen.

But, of course, all that right there, that's just fiction, the ravings of a madman. Lady Gabrielle would never think such things of the leaders of the Society.

Ryan's right. As I think back to the various stages of character development Lady Gabrielle has undergone since 2010, I notice that the more adventures I have played, the less important the Society has become, to the point where it has for the most part fallen off the list for her. This is probably because the scenarios really don't call a character's loyalty into question, or have decision points for a player to choose between his PC's priorities and the Society. There have been exceptions, of course, but I had to think for myself to create them for myself; they were not presented to me. Though, there was that one time where I did lose out on The Boon to End All Boons due to placing personal goals above the Society.

Anyways, in the campaign as it is, where the Society falls on a PC's priorities list doesn't really matter. And that's totally fine.

Nobody knows. A PC might have met as many as three. That's the beauty of the Decemvirate. Some characters, based on their play history, have a good indication of who some of the Decemvirate were and may know as many as three one-time members, though they have no way to verify if those three are still members of the Decemvirate, have been given early retirement, or have "taken an extended vacation to stay with relatives in the countryside."

Just because this thread is every role player's dream where they get to "tell you about my character!"

Sebastian Seroch
CG Human Inquisitor (Infiltrator) of Cayden Cailean

1. His own personal freedom (he grew up as a slave)
2. The freedom of others
3. Andoran faction goals (generally directly related to #2)
4. Hedonistic pleasures such as ale, wine, and music, having had none of these things for many years.
5. PFS

Numbers 1 and 2 could be reversible if the martyrdom of sacrificing his own freedom would in some way truly free a great number of people, although he's pragmatic enough to recognize this is unlikely.

While PFS is mostly just a job, he recognizes that undertaking these missions will often put him in a position to further his other goals. Perhaps more often, even, than he could accomplish on his own, so it's good to serve as a Pathfinder in that respect.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

To address the original "insult" (for which I'm ever oh so sorry), I listed three options to gain more insight into the direction of the Pathfinder Society and its goals.

None of which enlightened him, as I understand it.

Silver Crusade 3/5

I've created a revised histogram for this thread. I have now included "N" to represent the number of responses where The Pathfinder Society was not given a listing in the character's loyalties.

My First PFS character and currently unplayed.
Jacobus Blackwell Lv. 2 Urban Ranger of the Grand Lodge
Born and raised in Absolom. Nourished himself and enriched his life on tales of the exploits of great Pathfinders. The son of 2 University teachers so he grew-up with a thirst for knowledge and understanding, he just enjoyed a more "hands on" approach.

Being a Pathfinder was all he wanted and could dream of for his life. One day the tales of his exploits and discoveries would be published.
1. The Society.
2. The Society.
3. His assembled Pathfinder Associates.
4. Exploration and excitement.
5. The Grand Lodge because they are mostly vague and send us on so many varied missions.

My second PFS and highest level character. Entering into semi-PC retirement.
Marcus Brightblade Lv. 4 Paladin of Iomedae and member of the Andoran Faction
Marcus started out with the lofty ideals of headstrong youth. Freedom for all and bringing the light of Justice to the dark places of the world. As of late, with so many recent missions near the world wound, he has begun to question his involvement in the society and the Faction. Currently retired from the society and using his newly purchased caravan to spread the teachings of Iomedae and raise money, troops and awareness of the dangers threatening the world at the Worldwound.
1. Fighting Demons and ridding their evil taint from the world.
2. Protecting his allies and companions.
3. Iomedae.

I am always trying understand why a certain PC of mine would be a member of and continue on with the Society. Thus the retirement of Marcus. I just feel as though he can better serve his/Iomedae's cause by being directly on the front line battling evil. Currently working on a new character, undecided as of yet, so "to be continued".
Sorry this was so long.

Grand Lodge 5/5

1. Self-preservation. Despite the society helping to free me from the Onyx Alliance's operation in shadow Absalom, they clearly aren't as deserving of my initial loyalty as I had assumed - a lesson I have learned the hard way. What sick individual would send me to the wedding of one of the Blakros clan, the very people that enslaved me and delivered me to the Onyx Alliance in the first place?
2. Spreading the word to all of my kind that the shadow plane is no safe haven, and we may be better off finding a permanent place within this world. There is terrible evil in the shadow plane that I only escaped by the grace of the Count. I would never willingly go back there and I would urge all wayangs to give up their hopes for returning.
3. My fellow Society adventurers. The venture captains seem all too removed from the harsh realities of what they send us to do on their behalf with little information and less preparation. The decemvirate may well all be mad; I grow increasingly distrustful of their motives. Torch is certainly a self-serving, power hungry wreck of a man, but perhaps the more mainstream shadow lodge was not as paranoid as many claim.
