Druid

Advice

Is there any good archetypes, or prestige classes that really beef up your animal companion? I've got an idea for a character but I need a really good companion and I'm looking to optimize the animal.

No archetypes I know buff the companion and no PrCs that up it without a cost. Mammoth Rider gains a sort of improved companion, but has no casting. To my knowledge barbarians actually get the most awesome companions because they can share rage powers. Druids however can buff the pet with spells, which works with any of the archetypes.

you could go with Bear Shaman and beef up your druid instead:)

Your best way to beef up your animal companion are your spells, look at your various buff spells, and the druid has a decent amount of them.

You mean kill them with your bear hands?

Unfortunately one of the coolest ways to pump your companion seems to be an Aasimar =/

Gets the Celestial template for just a feat.

Best druid archetype for an awesome animal companion is to play a summoner.

Spend spells and gear money on your animal companion and you will be fine.

He could go with a lion shaman, try to call himself cat hands, then have a bunch of gangsters change it to Pussy hands:)

ape shaman archtype, at 4th level and a few items or one or 2 spells per encounter and it will do 1d6+11 damage

I was looking at Nature warden but I'd have to throw in a few levels into ranger to get into it, is that a good option or should I try and stick with buffing spells?

Best thing you can do is not go Druid.

Take a Oracle and choose assimar.

Your favored bonus should be improving your animal companion revelation.

Lunar/Nature Mysteries both give companions.

LVL 1 Spirit's Gift = Choose Fast Healing 1
LVL 3 Celestial Servant = Celestial Template
LVL 5 Evolved Companion = Your choice - Reach is often good.

Best feats for STR Based companion
Companion Feats: Armor Proficiency (Barding), Power attack, Narrow Frame, Bull rush, Improved Bull Rush.

Nature mystery gives your companion a 6 in INT.
Lunar mystery gives you access to more combative companions.

If your companion is STR based improved bull rush is one of the best feats you can take and you can have it as early as level 6. Your companion will be at +6 BAB with four feats.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

Along some of the same lines, play a Hunter...

You don't need to go into ranger, Wild Child Druid or World walker will give you your prequisite, but to qualify for the +4 bab you'll need to take a lvl 1 dip in a martial class at level five if you want to start it at nature's warden at level 6.

Scarab Sages

Remember that the Evolved Companion feat is very much subject to DM interpretation. That is one of the most poorly worded feats from a rules stance (evolved familiar too).

Anyway, if you want the companion to be amazing, it will require synergy between your druid and the companion. Two formats of this, either find the area your druid lacks and fill that gap, or, double up on a single specialization.

I will note that if multi-classing, the boon companion can work well with the animal domain, as it adds 4 to your effective druid level, while the animal companion via that domain only requires 3 of that to get to it's max level, so having a level in something else presents no additional loss(other than favored class bonus and spells per day issues).

For another thought, consider the size of your companion. Their are options for ones that stay size small, ones medium, and ones Large. The animal's size will drastically change it's role for your PC. In example, a small companion is better suited for stealth, but makes a much worse blocked as opponents can more easily fire over the companion.

The Diabolist allows for a Tiny companion (Imps only), while the Mammoth Rider allows for a Huge animal companion. Dhamphirs (and humans with racial heritage) have access to a feat for an undead companion, while assimars can get a celestial one.
