Example Thread For Beginners

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

I thought I would start this thread to give people examples of how to do various things for the game.

The rule book does a good job, but sometimes it's easier to see an example.

I had a few questions about making a starting hand, asked and got the answeres, so hopefully this will make things easier for beginners like myself.

Example set up of a starting hand for a single character solo game.

Choose a character:-

Valeros has been chosen for this example.

We will also use the card set from page 21 of the rulebook.

Choose your cards:-

Every character gets 15 cards to start with to make your Character Deck, you need to check your Character Card to see what you can and cannot use:-

Valeros

Weapon 5
Spell -
Armor 3
Item 2
Ally 2
Blessing 3

All the cards used must be of the Basic type.

Give your cards a shuffle and place your Hand size (Veleros has a hand size of 4) into your hand, or face up in front of you as required. For this example they are in front of you.

All characters have a Favoured Card Type, in Veleros’s case this is Weapon.

So at this point Veleros has four cards face up in front of you, and the rest of your Character Deck is face down at the side of them.

For this example you have drawn:-

Mattock, Wooden Shield, Blessing of the Gods, Chain Mail.

You have not drawn a Weapon card, so you do not have a Favoured Card Type in your hand.

So, you now discard these four cards to one side and draw the next four cards from the top of your Character Deck.

This time you get:-

Dagger, Longsword, Potion of Hiding, Blessings of the Gods

As you now have a Favoured Card Type (Dagger & Longsword are Weapon) you are now ready to start.

Take all the discarded cards and shuffle them back into your Character Pile.

Hopefully all the above is right, if not, someone please let me know.

All the best.

Looks right to me. I would add:

* Put your character card in front of you, with the side regarding your Strength/Dexterity/etc. face up. You can ignore anything with a checkbox next to it; those are advances that become available after a few games.

* Look over your character card, in order to get a sense of the dice you roll for certain abilities and bonus skills you have (like Valeros' melee skill) for certain checks. Also review your powers, as those provide effects that you'll use very often in the game.

Updated version:

You will also have a Charactr Token Card, this is to place in a Location within the game. As the game has not started yet, just place it in front of you for now.

Below are the amount of cards you can draw for Valeros.

Weapon 5
Spell -
Armor 3
Item 2
Ally 2
Blessing 3

Example set up for Locations Part 01

This is my way of doing it, you may use your own variation of where to put the Location cards. I use the left to right option as it's easier for solo play. You can use the clock based version as shown in the rule book or any other variation you want.

How many Locations are used in the game is based on how many characters are in play. By that I mean even a solo game with 4 characters played by a single player gets the same amount of Locations as four individual players.

For this example I will be using the Brigadoom Scenario set up for solo play.

Place the Brigadoom card in front of you.

First of all let’s decide on how many characters we want to play as this will decide how many locations we have open in the game:-

1. Woods, Waterfront, Farmhouse.
2. As above, plus Wooden Bridge.
3. As above, plus Academy.
4. As above, plus Prison.
5. As above, plus Garrison.
6. As above plus Treacherous Cave.

When using the above always start at player 1 options, Woods, Waterfront, Farmhouse, then if you are using more characters, carry on with the next lines locations. Place these cards in a line from left to right under the Brgadoom card.

Example:-

Playing four characters would give you all the options locations from 1 – 4:-

Woods, Waterfront, Farmhouse, Wooden Bridge, Academy and Prison.

So, for four characters you would have six locations.

Find the Location Cards required and place them side by side where you are playing.

I would place them in the order given on the Brigadoom card, with Woods always at the extreme left hand side and Treacherous Cave on the extreme right hand side if in play. In this example the extreme right card would be Prison.

Example of four player locations order, +’s added for spacers:-

Woods+Waterfront+Farmhouse+Wooden Bridge+Academy+Prison.

End of part 01, continues in part 02

All the best.

Example set up for Locations part 02

Okay we have the Locations put in place but.... we need to put in villains, henchmen, etc.

So, let’s look at the Woods card:-

For this location you need to make a deck of the following:-

Monster 4
Barrier 2
Weapon 1
Spell 0
Armor 0
Item 2
Ally 0
Blessing 0

So starting with your Basic Monster cards from the main box (You have set up your box as shown in the rulebook?), shuffle them and deal the four cards required for this location face down in front of you. Put the rest of the Monster cards back in the box.

Repeat for the Barrier, Weapon and Item cards. The other sections say 0, so you take no cards for those options.

Now take all the cards you have placed in front of you from the Monster, Barrier, Weapon & Item packs and shuffle them all together and then place them face down below the Woods card.

Repeat the above for the other Locations by referring to what you need to make up the Location Deck for each Location.

Your Locations are now all set up ready to play.

All the best.

Example of Setting Up Your Blessings Deck.

All you need do is randomly select 30 cards from the Blessing Cards in your main box.

Now just shuffle the cards and place the Blessing Deck in front of you. You can use the variation used in the set up example on page 05 of the rule book.

This is your timer for the game, just 30 cards, no matter how many characters, the Blessing Deck is 30 cards. Future additions may change this, but for now it is always 30 cards.

All the best.

Liberty's Edge

You didn't go over the Villain and Henchman additions to the locations decks...

OOpsie, I'll add that to an update.

All the best.

Example set up for Locations part 02 update - Using Brigadoom

Okay we have the Locations put in place but.... we need to put in villains, henchmen, etc.

For Brgadoom, your villain is Jubrayl Vhiski (check the card) and his henchmen will be Bandits.

So, take Jubrayl Vhiski out of the box, along with a henchman (in this case Bandits) for every other location. If you are running a game with 4 locations that would be Jubrayl Vhiski and 3 Bandits cards. Put these to one side for now.

Now, let’s look at the Woods card:-

Once you have all this done, take the Jubrayl Vhiski card and the other 3 bandit cards and shuffle them. Now place one card face down on the top of each Location Pile.

Reshuffle the Location Decks, now the villian and henchmen can be in any Location Deck and any position within the deck.

Normally you will only have 1 henchman (in this case, Bandit) or villian (Jubrayl Vhiski) in a Location Deck, but this will change to a henchman and a villian if the villian manages to escape (More on this in a later example, don't worry about it at this point)

Your Locations are now all set up ready to play.

All the best.

Okay, how am I doing so far! Lol.

Examples of Game Over

There are various ways of losing the game.

Not being able to advance the Blessing Deck:-

You only have a set number of cards for the Blessings Deck and this is your timer, no matter how many players you have.

Once you have turned the last Blessings card from the Blessings Deck and all players have completed their turns, then the game is over.

Not defeating the Villain:-

If you don't defeat the villain by the end of the last round of the Blessing Deck, then the game is over.

All the players in the game being dead:-

If all players are dead before the villain is defeated, the game is over.

All the best.
