Star Knife

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Have a few questions about this one.

1) As was mentioned in the thread I responded to this is weird to be in Harsk's deck because not only is it elite but its a strength/melee weapon.

2) In addition to that its a strength/melee weapon that requires dex/range to acquire.

These two things together make me thing something must have changes right before printing. Unless maybe that finesse keyword will somehow explain it.

There are several weapons that are only distingushed from others by having the finesse keyword.

Gary, you already pointed this out on the Half Plate thread. Do you think it really needed to have it's own thread?

I pointed the first part out. The second part is different. (The part about the check) I just figured I would consolidate it all while I was at it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The OP has a legitimate question here. The starknife is listed as a dex/ranged check to acquire, yet is a strength/melee check in combat. In addition the weapon is listed as a knife with the melee trait.

In comparison a dagger is listed as a knife with the ranged trait. It seems to me that to be consistent, it should have the ranged trait and use dex/ranged for the combat check like other weapons with the finesse and knife traits. Or it should be a strength/melee to acquire.

This has been addressed in a couple different threads... though, of course I can't find it at the moment.

A star knife is not a throwing star or other ranged weapon, it is a finesse weapon. Thematically speaking it makes sense that dex is the check to acquire based on it being a lighter, agile weapon, but strength for combat as strength governs the melee skill as a mechanic.

The weapon's here because it fit in the RPG campaign... doesn't make it a great weapon, but it does fit with the stats and the theme.

Sorry, I missed this thread when it first came up.

The Starknife is a hybrid weapon, so far the only one that's been released. It has two powers, the standard Melee attack (which is generally Strength-based) and the "Knife" keyword power of adding a d4 when playing another weapon (which is generally Dexterity-based). We could have made it Strength/Melee/Dexterity/Ranged 6 to acquire, but that seemed a little much for a simple weapon. So when we decided to choose between the two skill pairs, we left off Strength/Melee for a bit of variety.

The trait Finesse's functionality is nonexistent for Rise of the Runelords' characters. It won't be forever.

Thanks for explaining the design concept Mike.

IMHO I find the combo really sells the weapon short. Most Dex based characters would be uninterested in the weapon as it doesn't play into their strengths, while most strength based characters would not be able to make the dex check to acquire without help. Further I find the knife discard functionality to be of extremely limited value. In fact I don't think I have ever used it. If it were a recharge I would be far more willing to take advantage of it. I could also see a character power that would turn knife functionality into a reveal and thus making it a duel wield weapon. But that is just my opinion.

Thanks the great game Mike.

Noted. Thanks.

Well, let's actually take a look at the Str based characters. Starknife is a 4 check to acquire.

Amiri: d6 dex - 1/2 chance, decent
Seelah: d4 dex - 1/4 chance, very hard
Valeros: d8 dex - 5/8 chance, also decent. Also doesn't discard the weapon when using discard powers.

That being said, most of the other weapons they get are better.

I actually think the proficiency requirement hampers it more than anything. The dex based characters don't tend to have proficiency by default (Merisiel, Sajan, Lem. Harsk is the only proficient character that's Dex-based and only Merisiel can get it through a feat)

@Zeroth - don't forget that the eventual wielder/owner does not have to be the one to find the Starknife. Merisiel, Sajan, Harsk or even Lini can snag the starknife and then hand it over to a fighter during or after the scenario. Whenever I've found this I've kept it in the party - but it will probably go in an Adventure or two's time.

I can't find the stats for the Star Knife. I have a player that is going to be a cleric of Desna in my upcoming campaign and wants to use one. Thanks for any help!

This thread is about the card in the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, so you've asked your question in the wrong forum.
