Improved Familiar - Reskinning with mechanics allowed?

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

Can someone take Improved Familiar and instead of getting an entirely new familiar, just use it to improve their existing familiar?

For instance, can someone who's had a raven familiar for 7 levels take Improved Familiar, choose faerie dragon (meeting all prerequisites of course) but just keep their raven with the faerie dragon statistics? Since familiars are normally spirits inhabiting the body of an animal, this doesn't seem to be any type of mechanical advantage other than for consistency for the character.

Thoughts?

This really isn't a rule question, given that it is a reskinning of the existing familiar choices.

That said, ask the GM. It should mostly be okay. If I was the GM, I would ask two questions:
1) Are you trying to get a familiar with an alignment not normally possible for you?
2) Are you effectively getting a familiar that would otherwise be problematic to have (such as an imp in some situations)?

If no to both, I'd definately allow it. If yes... We could probably work something out anyway.

Strict RAW what you want doesn't work.

Pretty much every GM I've ever played with (non-PFS) has allowed it - generally we have the old familiar "evolve," Pokemon style, into the new one. It's easy if you are getting a celestial version of your old animal, but can still make sense with the extraplanar familiars.

Reskinning is entirely up to you and your GM. I probably would require that obviously magical creature remain looking obviously magical, so your "faerie raven" would have some rainbow feathers and other unnatural features. I once had a GM perfectly fine with reskinning a faerie dragon into a cheshire cat for my arcane trickster.

I could confidently answer No to both questions HaraldKlak asked (I would expect to meet any normal reprequisites already on the familiar). As it's a pirate campaign I'm guessing no familiar would be too problematic to have.

The specific situation I'm looking into is keeping a "Monkey" familiar but giving it a more "Improved" set of capabilities at 7th. I don't feel the 'entropic' (or similar) templates add enough to the familiar to warrant the feat at 3rd, so I would wait until 7th to get a different type of familiar but still keep the 'monkey'. I'm fine if it looks different, etc.

I'll definitely present it to the GM I was just curious if there was anything I'd missed either specifically allowing this or denying this in the rules.

By the rules its not a faerie dragon. About the only reasonable improved famiar to "add" to your monky is one of the templates like celestial. Anything else is realy a new creature.

So it's a Faerie Monkey :)
