I plan on running a quick 2 hour game for a local game day.
And the voters want a dragon fight... I have the big black dragon from back in the day, and I ran a adventure where the final encounter had a bunch of negative levels which imparted it CR threat, also in adventures status effects do the same.
So for fluff the heroes are enjoying some down time, when chaos insues
The beginning is trying to figure what's going on as ppl are panicing as the town comes under attack. While this is going on the towns "protectors throw down with the dragon and they loss but damage has been down" second the dragon believes it has won and no one can stand against it so it heads to the center of town, where the heros are and lands or even just walks there. The heroes are forced to die on there feet or serve on there knees.... to surrender to or slay the Dragon..

I will have the player play with pregen characters 7th level

I can use any and all help

I will have a map set up, dragon and hero figs and I also have some 3-D buildings

antimagic field on the containment area, pin it (the entire body) to the ground with adamantine chains fused to an adamantine floor. once you get the head/neck secure toss a muzzle on the thing to keep that pesky breath weapon under control. maybe run a few--oh your title doesnt say trap a dragon.

well, some easy ways to bring the CR down is lower its age category (if doing so would lower its CR too much, then tack on a few sorcerer levels--draconic bloodline, naturally), or have it be cursed (as the bestow curse spell) to something to give it a weak point, or any number of other things (making it undead gives it advantages in DR/HP/immunities, but reduces his effective HP and opens up a host of other weaknesses from the added type).

beyond that and going into homebrew territory there's crippling it (removing natural attacks, lowering physical stats), making it rather scrawny/runty (less HD or smaller size category), or other deformities (statuses that are stuck on all the time, like blindness, dazzled, etc.)

also, remember: if youre having it fight by itself, it can still be a few CR above the party, since he WILL get swamped by the party unless you play it real smart (though "smart" tends to translate to "cheap" from the players perspective), doing things like using the environment to its advantage (like keeping underwater if it can breathe there, flying and using its breath weapon as often as able while out of reach), never, EVER being indoors where it cant fly, keeping itself buffed, and having various backup plans and escape routes.

if he's got minions then you'd want him a bit closer to the party's level.

I would like the size, for hp so it will last, having a wing damage means he can't fly, if I use up a bunch of spells

I like the curse idea will drop his fighting ability

Is there any spells/poisons that drop natural armor / spell resistance?

Also I will be running this for possiable some first timers, so I want everyone to have fun.

7th level party, and you want a dragon fight. Since its going to be a solo you need to have the dragon have a CR = APL+3 for it to be a reasonable boss fight. APL+4 is fine too, but might be rough on a new party.

An adult black dragon is CR11, with is APL + 4. How to lower the CR? Give it the drunk condition? Give it some existing damage (from the earlier fight, maybe a balista bolt through the wings impairing flight?)

Alternatively you can go with a CR 7 (young) dragon and apply some +CR template onto it. A half fiend young black dragon is CR9, and ought to be fine for a beginners group.

Or a advanced young black dragon (CR9) with some extra magic items.

An adult black fpdragon with some wounds and a negative level, or perhaps a curse from the cleric he killed. "I curse you to be unable to fly" would make it reasonable that the dragon was sticking around, or a -6 to his Dex...

I was thinking one wing is broken, so no flight, or if so super crappy, tail with damage so it can not be used,
I like the idea of it having taken some negative levels and cursed with a neg to dex
Also thought of some existing poison damage.

With neg lvs its spell casting will be effected and any d20 roll and some hp too

I'm planning to have the last defender to be there round one and his last action is to cast energy resistance on the party to protected them and first round of the dragon is to crush him.

There will be a seige weapon near by that the party could use for a shot or two.
There will be cover to protect the group

So I need a cr 10 threat for a group the dragon I would like to use starts at cr16 now to make it a cr 10

The Exchange

Applying the "fatigued" condition (which seems reasonable, considering the kind of day the dragon has had) is a possibility I've used before.
