Rise of the Runelords Interactive Maps

Why isn't this a separate purchase by now? for anyone who bought the physical book it is a huge extra cost to chuck that extra $40 ontop just for maps and nothing else.
I know people have been clamoring for it and there are atleast 4-5 different threads asking but no paizo staff have responded.

Is there some special logical reason? I know that the file exists because it has been confirmed to be a part of the Anniversary pdf package. So it isn't like it would even take any extra work on paizo's part to create the pdf itself.

Liberty's Edge

I asked about this for a while ago on the RotRL forums:
http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2pf9j?RotRL-Interactive-Maps-Separate-Purchase

Never got an answer.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It is a real shame, it is something that really appeals to the vtt gaming scene, I subscribed to the AP and Modules line for this very purpose, I just don't have the time to write my own stuff these days and the paizo hired writers are damn good at what they do.
But even the dragon's demand, a module I praise quite highly as a really well designed beginner module (infact I will be shoving any new DM into that module over all else and starting new groups with it, changing features to keep it interesting to me)

However the maps are horrible resolution, to the point where grid lines end up being UNDER one pixel in width after scaling and there are compression artifacts around the stylized text :(

Supporting the VTT community is a sure fire way for the future.

I was hoping to get the interactive maps a while back. So I could send copies to a print shop, to be printed as poster maps for my game.

Especially for the big Boss Fights and odd rooms that can't be made out of dungeon tiles. Makes for a nice experience.

Instead, I ended up scanning the maps from the book, with my scanner on a RAM-killing high resolution. Then painstakingly photoshoping out the room numbers when possible.

Yeah, I mean I am fairly skiled with photoshop and have all the tools required to do what is needed (I work in graphics design and have a penchant for it) however as I do this for my income I don't really have the time or energy to make maps from scratch these days, certainly not with the speed that my groups clear things.

I do hope paizo gets back to one of us on this, I have seen it mentioned in a number of threads actually and felt that it needed to be mentioned again so they can see the importance/want for the product is there (for every person that does think to ask the question, mention it... there are 10-100 more that are likely wanting it too)

Word to the wise. I stumped up for the interactive maps and then found out they don't display properly on a Mac. This is mentioned in the FAQ so it is not something that is hidden but I managed to miss it.

I also wonder why there isn't a map pack for the Anniversary edition book. Put me down as another person who would happily pay for this.

Add me to the list of potential customers, too.

Ah one of my friends had this issue, you can get around it with certain third party pdf readers however.

It exists, just not as a separate product which is the weird part, they don't even need to make the pdf as it is now... it is already made and on their server, just not available to be purchased separately.

I know and I really don't understand why. Did anyone official give a reason somewhere? I doubt they just overlooked that.

I bought a few different viewers off the App Store but none of them would let me change the layers so that you can turn off the gm information. Do you happen to know the name of one that works? Please don't go to any trouble to find out and thanks for the advice already given.

Cheers

Apple's PDF rendering engine just doesn't handle the interactive features properly; it's entirely outside of our control. Unfortunately, as far as I know, every iOS app out there uses Apple's rendering engine, so our interactive maps don't work on iPhones or iPads.

Our interactive PDFs do actually work just fine on desktops running OS X, but you need to view them with Adobe Reader, not Preview. (Reader uses Adobe's engine, while Preview uses Apple's.)

Do you know when, if ever, that the interactive maps will be available as a separate purchase?

Thanks for the advice. I busted out an old laptop hooked it up to a tv lying on it's back and the maps have been great.

These are now available for separate purchase here.
