It absolutely does not have a hive mind. In the Carpenter version as in the original short story, every separated bit of it becomes independent and absolutely selfish, unwilling to sacrifice itself to keep another piece a secret -- this is why the blood test works, and why (in Campbell's original story) the humans manage a clean victory.

My players think very much the way the characters in the movie did when facing no-win or close to no win situations. They do not turtle up or withdraw, they say "what do we do". I think most gamers unfortunately would just "check out" if put in the same situation where they were going to lose their prized character - either not caring what happens or just playing stupid when faced with almost guaranteed defeat.

Yeah, I suppose that's the problem with converting Call of Cthulhu-type beasties in a game like Pathfinder. In Pathfinder, you fight the bad guy and probably win. In CoC, you better hope to your God that you never fight the real bad guy, because that's a fate worse than death. Hopelessness and helplessness are not just an aspect of this sort of game, but a prime feature.

I suppose that might be why I've never been satisfied with D20 versions of the Thing. Quite simply, humanity doesn't stand a chance against it except in exceptional circumstances (we can all agree that Kurt Russel and Wilford Brimley are exceptional circumstances). That's why it can't ever truly work in Pathfinder/D&D. Still, I love seeing interpretations of the Thing, and would be interested in seeing Paizo's take on it. The closest they've come so far is the mezlan (a quasi-invincible shapechanging ooze from Dead Heart of Xin), which could be re-imagined as a Thing with a few minor alterations.

Not to further derail the thread, but I'm gonna. For Thing fans, I highly recommend the short story by Peter Watts. It's "The Thing" as told from the perspective of The Thing.

I'm just going to recommend the original version, John W. Campbell's Who Goes There?

Back on topic, it would be just super if the Dominion of the Black adventure made use of Legendary Games' Beyond the Void. I don't know how much of that Lovecraftian beauty is Open Content, but the spells in particular are fantastic. They're a bit unpolished and could use a revision, but would fit perfectly with what I think the Dominion embodies. Especially the one that places an embryonic aberration in its target, which gestates and eventually takes over the host from the inside out, almost like... eh, nevermind.

oh! oh! i wanna derail too.... here goes......Purple Monkey Dishwasher.... did it work?

Yes, yes! You can say it... "like a slaad!"

Wait, aren't we still Product Identity?! Nuts. {sulks}

So I'm assuming that while running this it will be required to play the soundtracks from either the Heavy Metal or Fire & Ice movies?

Were you not already?

Heavy Metal and Veteran of the Psychic Wars are classic.

YES

The first two are definitely getting a lot of play in my Distant Worlds playlist at the very least. :D

As mentioned upthread, most of my playlist for this will probably be Final Fantasy and Chrono games soundtracks.

Granted, that's most of my playlists for games anyway, so.... =)

I can't believe this is actually going to happen. I mean, after they did Reign of Winter, I hoped, dearly, dearly hoped they finally had the momentum to go to Numeria. Ah, I don't even care that I'm in the "no science in my fantasy" camp. I just want to see what all this new awesome-sauce is going to be about!

We all know who the two people to thank for this are.

Thank you Brandon Hodge and Rasputin.

I have this horrible idea.

A leggy blond inquisitor of Brigh, sent to find out if there really are other synthetic gods.

"Are you alive? Prove it."

Hmmm. Not my cup of tea. If I wanted fantasy-ish sci-fi I'd run a Star Wars game. That said, I'll still keep up my subscription, because I'll no doubt get some great ideas (maybe even FOR Star Wars :) ), awesome art and maps, as well as the fiction.

I'm almost ashamed to admit getting this crossed up with teenaged memories of Hajime Sorayama art when thinking about it in a Numerian context.

Almost.

These days, there's Masamune Shirow. :)

I'm envisioning something more along the lines of Hal 9000.

And a first issue AP that opens with a bunch of neanderthals whooping and hollering around a large, black obelisk in the wilds of Numeria.

Maybe Brigh is a bigger god wherever that spaceship is from.

Maybe Brigh is the spaceship...? O_o

Maybe the Iron Gods are giant robot lions that form together to become.....never mind;)

Scarab Sages

Numeria...yes and take my money now...end of line.

I still find this AP upsetting...I Completely love the idea of it...but I am alone in my love among the people I play with...so I will never get to play it... :( . And highly unlikely ever to run it :( .

I guess I will just have to read it and live it vicariously though you guys.

Or find yet another group of RPers in my area...sigh.

Or find someone running a PbP of it on the forums. Or run one yourself.

Or see what it's like when it comes out. We're still a long way off. After all, there were some reformed fence-riders/naysayers once Rasputin Must Die! dropped. Maybe you can convince your crew as it gets closer to release and we reveal more about it. I'm happy that you're happy and hopefully we can make your crew happy too. :)

That would be nice...I proably could run it with a mix of people from my three different gaming groups.

@Orandue: While generally perfer over the table games vs online pbp...I might try it with the AP.

My group already knows this AP is on the books once we finish Jade Regent.

In the linked panel at 9:06, James says where the ship is from. I can't quite hear what he is saying.

Help?

Paizo Employee Developer

"This alien spaceship from somewhere that you will learn where that's from, probably during Iron Gods."

Is what I heard.

I'm banking on Aballon. 3:1 odds, got my bookie lined up.

Silver Crusade

IIRC, it was said that the ship came from beyond Golarion's solar system...

Cthulhudrew wrote:

I'm falling more and more in love with this notion.

Mikaze wrote:

I hope that's inaccurate. I've got more than $5 riding on the ship being from Aballon!

But if it is Brigh that would be pretty cool. I'm still fairly certain that at least one of the Iron Gods is Epoch, though.

Paizo Employee Creative Director

I can say this. Brigh is not the spaceship. Brigh is NOT a goddess of technology; she's a goddess of invention and clockwork and something else to be determined since deities should have three areas of concern.

She DOES have a role to play in Iron Gods though, never fear!

Nor is the ship from Golarion's system.

Sovereign Court Contributor

Brigh reminds me of Rava, the Gear goddess in Midgard. Convergent evolution, no doubt. Though I like the idea that the two worlds share a multiverse.

The name, though, suggests Brigantia, Celtic goddess of fire, smithing, rule, and healing, known as Brigit or Bride in Ireland.

But the idea implies Galatea to me. And the uncanny valley.

Going by a lot of steampunk art I've seen, can I suggest visible garter-belts as the third area of concern?

Intriguing. With her focus on smithing and the forge, and her fuzzy ties to Brigid, a goddess of fire, poetry and inspiration, perhaps fire and creativity could be part of her 'theme.'

Trans"human"ism, in whatever form that might take? That may fall under "invention" though.
