I need a duck!

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I'm currently putting a character together, and he's just crying out for a duck familiar. Are there stats for a duck anywhere? Both the animal itself, as well as possible familiar bonuses? A duck, or even a goose? Official, 3rd party, homebrew, I'll take whatever I can get.

Any and all help appreciated!

there do not appear to be any stats for water fowl, you may want to just use the raven familiar stats but remove the ability to talk. have it give a +3 swim bonus maybe, and use a swim speed(10') when on the water surface.

bonus points if it sits on his head, and he responds 'what duck?'

I can't believe I've seen Pathfinder stats for a dodo and yet not a duck. Or goose. Or teal, stilt, plover, whippoorwill, cardinal, egret, auk, iiwi, or kakapo.

OK, I'm starting to realize why I haven't.

The Raven is probably the critter in the CRB that requires the least modifications, just as Xenon indicated. Aside from the birds of prey, it's the only Tiny bird I know of that has stats. Oh, but remove the talon attacks and switch the damage type of the bite to bludgeoning.

(The worst part is that now I have Weird Al's "I Wanna New Duck" stuck in my head.)

If a duck quack never echoes then where does it go... I now desperately want the guy with the duck familiar to come up with a 9th level sonic damage spell that draws from the 'vast dimensional reservoir of un-echoed duck quacks' to deal massive stored duck echo quack damage.

Man, Do I want to play with that character! That is friggin awesome

Page 11 of the Animal Archive basically states exactly what Captain Xenon suggests above for approximating animals that are not covered by a specific entry. They even use a cardinal for an example, Lincoln Hills!

So go for it! As long as it is made of wood and weighs as much as Feiya. ;)

Does anyone else know the children's game "Do you want to buy a duck?"

There is a D&D mini of a pig farmer, and it presents the perfect reason to choose a pig familiar.

You should know better than to pick up a duck in a dungeon.
Lose 2 levels.

I always thought a Sorcerer with a pig familiar was a cool idea because when I was a kid, I read The Chronicles of Prydain.

gonna be that guy here and bring up that (while an awesome spell origin) the quacks dont echo thing is actually been proven to be a myth...god I really need to scale my nerd back a little.

Well, it's like they always say: If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's obviously a raven with no talons and a dull beak. (Sigh.)

So that's what I'll go with, then. I thank you, my character thanks you, and my character's rav-, uh, duck thanks you.

(Quack!)

A duck(raven) is not just any duck, but a black duck, THE DUCK OF DOOM!

No I dig it. I think it was even mythbusters that challenged the myth and I personally love that show. Pathfinder being the kind of world where 'transplanar pandimensional duck echo quack storage areas' can be the answer to those questions instead of 'science!' makes 'harnessing the power of the transplanar pandimensional quack echo energy capacitor' one of the particularly funny ideas I've had recently. IMHO.

...or Daffy Duck... which may be better or worse than a duck of doom.

Give the the Dodge feat and you'll have Duck Dodgers.

Farfetch'd is my spirit animal, so I understand your deep need for duck.

What these fine fellows suggest is what I would do, as well.

The Malodorous Mallard Manual

Duck Hat
Level 3 Conjuring
Range 100ft + 10ft/level
Components: V, M
Casting Time: Full Action
Duration: 10 minutes/level
Save: Ref, Special

To cast this spell, the caster must spread stale bread on the ground while keeping an image of a specific person the caster wishes to find kept firmly in mind. An adult duck arrives from overhead, materializing out of thin air if necessary, and lands among the bread crumbs to eat. There it waits patiently until the spell is completed.
At the completion of the spell, the duck flies in the direction of the creature the caster wishes to find assuming that creature is in range of the spell. The duck will take a path traversible by the caster if at all possible.
Once it arrives at the target to be found, it perches on the target's head. The target can then make a saving throw vs. Ref. If the target fails his saving throw, the duck cannot be removed from his head until the completion of the spell's duration. Further, the duck begins to quack loudly and repeatedly. No force short of a Limited Wish can make this duck invisible or inaudible.

The Malodorous Mallard Manual

Mallard Mallet

Level 2 Enchantment
Range Personal
Components: V, M
Casting Time: Standard Action
Duration: 10 minutes/level
Save: None

This spell allows the caster to turn a living mallard into a melee weapon. It does not provide the mallard, so the caster will need to be carrying said bird. Alternatively, see the cantrip, Duck, Duck, Goose. Note that no other bird may be used in this spell.
Upon casting the spell, the bird's legs extend and lock into place so as to form a handle with which the caster can strike the enemy with the fowl.
The foul should treated as a club, however, upon a roll of 20, the bird makes enough noise and loses enough feathers as to stun the opponent for one round.

Seconded!

The Reign of Winter player's guide has stats for a puffin... but that thing doesn't have a swim speed either. Just add a swim speed and call it good.

I was just skimming through the "Ultimate Equipment" guide, and right there in their animal section it lists a duck for sale. And reading the entry on it I discover... that you're supposed to use the raven stats for ducks.

So, not only is it what I was/am going to be doing, but it's actually official. Huh.

(It also lists other farm animals like chickens and elephants. But it gives no info on stats for chickens. Good thing I wanted a duck, right?)

Indeed, Mythbusters busted it

Since Raven-Duck lost its Talon attacks, consider giving it a Swim speed as compensation.
