A Modest Rogue Adjustment

Liberty's Edge

So I had an idea for a simple bump to the rogue that would make a huge difference.

Magical Device Aptitude

Prerequisite: Minor Magic

Benefit: A rogue can take 10 on a Use Magic Device check.

Normally you cannot take 10 with this skill.

Advanced Rogue Trick
Magical Device Mastery.

Prerequisites: Magical Device Aptitude, Minor Magic

The rogue becomes so confident in the use of Magical Devices that she can use them reliably even under adverse conditions. When making a Use Magic Device check, she may take 10 even if stress and distractions would normally prevent her from doing so.

You would need at least 4 levels of rogue to get the first one, and 10 for the 2nd.

Thoughts?

I don't see the first one causing the game to explode. Would be great for out of combat utility and would let Take 10 do its job and give ease of play to someone who dumped a bunch of points into it anyway.

The second one probably wouldn't be overpowered either. In order to really get a bang out of it in combat you'd have to go through a ridiculous amount of gold and items, but that might vary with campaigns. Not sure what to say about it. Its however weaker than skill mastery. By a RAW reading of the current rules its useless because you could just take skill mastery to get the same effect if you had the first talent.

I don't think you need to make Minor Magic a requirement. Probably wouldn't be overpowered if you removed that, and might be more thematic for someone who wants to emulate magic without being magic, if that makes sense.

If you don't make minor magic a requirement, it becomes way to easy to dip.

Does it? Just put a level requirement or a UMD rank requirement on it maybe? Rogue 4 probably wouldn't hurt. Most rogue talents don't have a requirement, but most rogue talents are pretty meh or give a feat. Not a big deal, more magic to them I guess.

Rogue 4 could work, although none of the others have rogue pre-requisites.
