This is the Blood in the Sands PVP: Arena Six

FIRST EVER TRIAD BOUT! MAY THE BEST WARRIOR WIN! ARIAN VS BRUNO VS JEZEBEL!

Jezebel strides into the arena, her eidolon Trick by her side. She throws her long white blonde hair over her shoulder and blows a few kisses to the crowd. Stunningly beautiful, her glowing tattoos set off her body nicely.

Initiative:
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Initiative: 13

So I'm west, Bruno north, Jezebel east I assume? We probably should have put up some walls/columns to avoid charge-splatting, but I guess it's all in good fun, right? ;-)

Arian lopes in, surveying his opponents.

Four on one he growls, Sounds fair to me. . He spits in indifference to the crowd, then smiles wickedly, eyeing the dwarf and yelling over the din.

Hey Bruno! Magic's no fun! Whaddya say we smash the mage, then you and me have a go of it while your camel eats her? Camels eat meat?

Init is 10. Crap.

Uh, Arbiters who are my opponents?:
Init 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno has eyes locked on Jezebel. So does Esmeralda. He hears an offer to splatter the summoner and immidiately replies, Aye, and gladly! Camels done eat meat, no, but Esmeralda's special, she is. I think she's acquired a taste. Haha!

Spoiler:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Init: 10. Oh nutz. The summoner goes first.

Good, on your Marks ,I will be your Arbiter.

Have you determined starting points yet? If not let's say we put you alphabeticaly in order blue, green, red.

So Arian in D-11

Bruno in O-18

Jezebel in O-3

There's a Grid intersection missing in 2-3 BTW , let's hope it doesn't get too confusing.

Surprise Round

Jezebel looks at the two in mock surprise, You two are going to gang up on little old me? She smiles wickedly before saying Sounds like fun. Quickly looking at the scroll in her hand, she says a few words before disappearing. Meanwhile, the weird looking Eidolon crouches on his hind legs looking wary.

Smug Arbiter:
Cast Invisibility from scroll. Activate quick runner's shirt to move to N1 20' off the ground using Slippers of Spider Climbing. Stealth: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (18) + 21 = 39 Trick, meanwhile, readies an action to charge whichever opponent comes within 50' first.

Perception DC 39:
Jezebel is in square N1 20' up the wall

You boys are up! Good luck and here's to a good battle!

I thought I would be red, Jezebel would be blue, and Bruno would be green, but we can do those, Sleet. It doesn't really matter. Note that I screwed up and should have had an 11, since I bought an ioun stone at level 4. Shouldn't matter since I have a higher init bonus anyway, so I'll go now.

Grr, like I said, gods damned casters. Let's kill all her pets first. She has to show herself sometime.

With that the half elf flicks his wrist, producing a potion and downing it, growing to tremendous size and stepping towards the eidolon.

I'm at E/F-9/10. I didn't mean to see your move in advance, but the spoiler tag was broken. It doesn't change my move, but in the interest of brevity I thought I would just post this now. If/when the eidolon moves through my threatened area I will trip attempt it with my AoO (reach) and hit a 26 CMD.

Smug:
Swift to draw potion, Standard to drink it. Grow to D/E-10/11. 5ft move to E/F-9/10. AoO Trip if eidolon moves through my reach. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Jezebel:

You can't ready an action to charge ,only standard or move actions.

You can charge as a standard action only when you are not allowed to take full round actions like in the surprise round but charging in general is still a full round action. Also if you ready an action that uses up Trick's surprise round action so he(or she) would be back to normal for anything after. Sorry.

Smug Arbiter:
oops Totally forgot about that lol. Ok In which case Trick will ready a move action to dart away if either of them come within 15'

NP Mbauers it was my stupid fault for forgetting the second tag lol

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno mounts and growls, Come out, come out, wher'er ye arrr

no movement, now mounted.

Round 1

The eidolon charges Bruno and pounces on him, biting and slashing with it's claws.

Charge to N17 (assuming you are mounted in MN 18-19) Bite, Claw, Claw

Smug Arbiter:

All of a sudden a flock of four evil looking eagles appear and all move to attack Bruno, swarming around him.

Smug Arbiter:

Perception DC 29:

Arian shrugs and, seeing that he has no foes to face in the immediate future, chugs another potion.

No visible effects, 5 ft step to F/G-10/11.

Since this is an exhibition, can I go over my consumable limit with no penalties?

Smug:
Move draw bull's strength potion, standard drink. Enlarge Person rounds remaining (9/10), Bull's Strength rounds remaining (30/30).

Only if I can ;-) although if I beat both of you i think I should at least get my last 3 points I need for fifth level lol.

Thats for you to decide. Bruno gets an AoO against at least one of the Eagles or the Eidolon if he had his Lance drawn though not sure if he entered the arena with his weapon in hand but I guess so.

Yeah he definitely does get an AoO if he had the weapon out. I think we can assume he did.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

dice:

The charge doesn't get an AoO, but appearing when summoned does. I think Esmeralda gets an AoO too, but correct me if I'm wrong

Bruno's seen this before. Both he and Esmeralda lash out at the eagles before laying into the invisi-pest's minion, but take some damage for their efforts.

Against what enemy did you make the AoO, one of the eagles or against the eidolon?

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Eagles.

You drop one of the Eagles and the Eidolon.

Round 2

The eagles continue attacking in a frenzy of flying feathers.

Meanwhile, Jezebel's beautiful voice rings out across the arena from somewhere up in the air in the south. Vatock reckshek bok, lok tek retock!

That perception DC is impossible for me.

Bruno that drops another bird. Murderer! ;-P

Jezebel:

You cannot summon the earth elemental underground.

"A creature or object brought into being or transported to your location by a conjuration spell cannot appear inside another creature or object, nor can it appear floating in an empty space. It must arrive in an open location on a surface capable of supporting it."

Smug Arbiter:
Due to the fact that Earth Elementals have earth glide, summoning one into the earth should be a perfectly acceptable location. If that is the case then one could not summon anything in water. Now the only issue I can see here is line of effect but I'm not even sure if that would be a problem as there is some debate on whether a conjuration spell is similar to teleporting which can go around line of effect. That said, I will ere on the side of RAW and say that it doesn't work to summon without line of effect in which case.

Added descriptor from above, all other actions the same.

A creature that looks like a small bear made entirely out of earth and stone with two gemstones for eyes appears briefly before sinking below the earth.

Jezebel:

It's just a purposely added limitation of the spell.

Summon Monster and Summon Nature's Ally must place the creature on a surface. You can't summon things into the air, even if they fly.

Thats also true for earthglide and swim.Swimming creatures can be summoned on the surface of water but not underwater.

Smug Arbiter:
Can you give me a link to that ruling? Because nowhere does it say that it must be summoned "on a stable surface" it specifically says they must be summoned "into an environment that supports them" Aquatic creatures are supported in an aquatic environment, flying creatures are supported in an air environment. You are looking at support from a weight perspective, not support in a perspective of able to exist in. I think that is a holdover from a previous edition because that language is not in the summon monster spell.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

wait, doesnt arian get a turn in there?

arbiter:

All summon spells fall under the general rules for conjuration.

RAW is absolutely unambigous here.To quote again:" It must arrive in an open location on a surface capable of supporting it."

It must be on a surface, that rules out the air completely because the air has no surface. Underground is out too,if you are borrowing your clearly not on the surface.
Water has a surface and this surface can support creatures with a swim speed.

Sorry to rain on your parade like that but RAW(and I think RAI) is pretty clear abut that.We could bring the others in on that question if you want.

I didn't go again, that was an addendum to my above actions because Sleet pointed out, correctly, that I cannot summon directly into the ground. However there is a debate now where he is saying that creatures must be summoned on the ground...period...regardless of if they are swimming or flying creatures. For instance I couldn't summon an air elemental in the air, I would have to summon it on the ground and then it would fly in the air or I would have to summon a water elemental on the surface of the water (which still doesn't make sense since the surface of the water by his definition wouldn't be a stable surface) and then have the water elemental swim down to wherever it was going. He is interpreting the line "Creatures cannot be summoned into an environment that does not support them" to mean physically supporting and not environmentally supporting like an aquatic creature in water or a flying creature in the air.

Water is a surface capable of supporting an aquatic creature. Air is a surface capable of supporting a flying creature. I'm sorry but I absolutely do not agree with your interpretation.

Nope I'm not interpreting that line. The quote I gave says surface. Its not about environmental support It must be able to stand and its weight has to be supported by the surface.
A surface is the outer topmost boundary of an object so the air has no surface.Underground and underwater are not surfaces.

Nowhere does it say anything about weight. Not even the definition of surface mentions weight. For instance could I summon a flying creature on the surface of a cloud? By your definition of surface that would apply. As it is the outermost layer of an object or body. or for instance the surface of an underwater pocket of warm water? again that would apply.

Smug Arbiter:
Didn't mean to be argumentative if it was coming across that way. It just doesn't make even a little bit of sense to me. I can understand having that in there to make it so I can't drop a Trex on someone from a mile up, but to have to fly back down to the ground to summon an air elemental is the height of idiocy in design. Let's table this for now as I haven't summoned anything in the air besides the eagles and for the match I will summon flying creatures near the ground. This can be discussed by all the arbiters on the discussion thread.

It does not say weight because it says" a surface capable of supporting it", a surface can only support weight. It's a surface, it can't support the needs of your respiratory system or anything if its that what you mean.
But we can let the others wheigh in.

Well the case can be argued that Air Elementals are weightless so EVERYTHING is a surface that supports them! :-P

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Oh, I think I've seen this debate around. There should be some threads around that might be able to add clarity.
In any case, Arian?

I understand that interpretation in terms of RAW, but I disagree as far as RAI. I believe it was intended for the purpose that Jezebel was talking about--meaning, no summoning a whale in the air or on land (to block a door or something). It seems reasonable to me to allow flying creatures to be summoned in the air. What squares are Bruno and Esmeralda in? I'll try to get my turn up soon.

Sorry for the delay

Round 2

Arian steps up, drawing a sickle and chain and whipping it around with malicious intent at one of the summoned birds.

Move to I/J-15/16. Attack L-19 bird--hits 26 AC for 17 damage.

Smug:
Move to I/J-15/16, draw Kusarigama. Attack L-19 bird, two-handed 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26. Damage 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 Enlarge Person rounds remaining (8/10), Bull's Strength rounds remaining (29/30).

That definitely drops him Arian.

Smug Arbiter:
Jezebel continues assembling her army. Summon mastery to summon an earth elemental in square N10 that immediately sinks into the ground.

Jezebel's voice again rings out over the field in a strange language. Vatock reckshek bok, lok tek retock!

You again see a creature, this time looking something like a small cougar with eyes of opals, sink into the ground.

Smug Arbiter:

Yep all of them are now kaput! Nice shots.

Smug Arbiter:
Same as before, summon a small earth elemental in M10 who immediately sinks into the ground.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno, seeing the last of his apparent foes are dispatched, moves up near his temporary ally so they will not be caught alone when the elemental onslaught begins.

E-F/7-8

Arian nods to Bruno and holds his ground.

I'll keep taking a total defense until one of the summoned creatures or Jezebel appears.

If you guys are doing the same thing then do you want to fast forward a bit? Jezebel is going to be summoning for the next few rounds at least.

Jezebel's voice rings out over the battlefield again and another rocky creature appears before sliding into the ground.

Arbiter:
Summon earth elemental in N9 who sinks into the ground.

I think you can go ahead and do your summons, it's pretty clear by now that they don't have a means to locate you.
If any of them want to slap on a buff or ready an action they can do it retroactively depending on how many rounds you need.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

I'm pretty sure this is going to look like Tremors here in a few rounds, so 'ol Esmeralda and I are going total Defence until we have something to hit.

Ok sounds good. This is all assuming Arian is in square HI14-15 which is where I thought he was based upon the descriptions above having been in IJ15-16 and then moving a 5' step up and to the left.

For the next few seconds, four more creatures continue to appear and sink beneath the surface. Vrak lock temock theock leshka meck.

Only look if you can understand Terran:
Surround the large two footed creature below the surface and await my command to rise and attack.

Smug Arbiter:
Four more rounds of summoning and dropping beneath the surface in squares MN 11-12. On the fifth round, they all move to surround Arian in positions G14, G15, H13, I13, H16, I16, J14, J15. They are all 5' below the ground. Meanwhile, Jezebel moves to square K13 on the ceiling and readies an action to cast a spell when the earth elementals appear. On the sixth round they will all rise in unison using 5' steps due to earth glide and begin attacking. The rising will trigger Jezebel's readied action to cast haste on four of them specifically the ones in HI13 and J14-15.

Jezebel is in square K13 on the ceiling

For four rounds, earth elementals appear and disappear into the earth. On the fifth round nothing happens. In the sixth round the earth elementals step up out of the ground surrounding Arian and attack.
