I have a dude, what is the correct pronunciation of the Sczarni?

Sczarni

Silver Crusade

Hi all in many events and other game session we have no clear idea of what is teh correct pronunciation of SCZARNI name.

And i want to know from where is that name?

Thanks to all!!

Sovereign Court

Ss-zar-nee. I think it's in the Rise of the Runelords players guide, I'm sure someone's already in the process of posting the excerpt from wherever it's from.

Here's where James Jacobs says it's zkar-nee.

Shadow Lodge

Like irish are full of Blarney, but with a Scar in front.

Sovereign Court

Rogue Eidolon's right, though I'm still pretty sure it's also in the old RotRL guide or something. I might just be losing my mind even more, though...

I don't think so, but your pronunciation is the one that makes more sense linguistically. There are people in high places who like it enough better to use it over zkar-nee anyway. Similarly, the iconic cleric, actually pronounced kie-ra (first syllable rhymes with die) is often pronounced kee-ra (first syllable rhymes with key).

Sovereign Court

Found it. It's in the old RotRL's players guide. It is absent from the Anniversary edition guide, though.

Oh, yeah, I knew it was in the PG. I just thought you meant that it had the common ss-zar-nee pronunciation back then. Ah internet miscommunication!

Got a source for "kiy-rah"?

That one probably isn't in any book, but it's how they say it at Paizo. It came up when we were talking about the Sczarni pronunciation at the banquet.

I suspect there's some bias from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Wait, is "kiy-rah" the same as "kee-rah", the homophone for the DS9 character? In that case, I answered you the opposite of how I meant to answer. Many people say "kee-rah", while "kie-rah" is how they say it at Paizo.

The correct pronunciation is, in fact, "throatwarbler mangrove". ;)

Shadow Lodge

Out here we call her Kir-ra or Kir-ah.

Sczarni

I don't care what you call me. Just have money when I get there, or pronunciation won't be your biggest concern.

Shoot, Bubba ain't shure how to say "Anbabms". But Bubba's always gonna help get stuff done fer the boss.

"Zarni" or you can do it as the Wrestler of the same name. "Cah - Zarny"

Little late to the party but hey, putting in my 2 coppers.

Yeah! Me and Hubba Bubba are great Zarniests. We zarny-it-up all the time. Besides what's the point of a name? Some scaredy-spear once said a Gnome calleded by any other name would still be the awesomerest!

Hubba Bubba? I been called worse, I suppose, but not by anybody still alive. Most people don't stay alive too long when Bubba gets mad.

Grand Lodge

It should be pronounced suh-CHAR-nee. Like the Cz in Czechoslovakia.

its pronounced "association of legitimate business persons"

I've heard both "sarnee" and "zarnee" in my area.

When I looked at it, I assumed it was "sk-zarnee" because of a detailed conversation I once had with a professor on the pronunciation of his Italian last name with an "sc" in the middle of it and that the Sczarni are vaguely the Italian mob.

Sczarni

It depends on what part of Varisia and what family you hail from.

Grand Lodge

I've never heard the term. Guaril always says "Fam-a-lee" strange he doesnt look elven to me.

Grand Lodge

Reminds me of a joke made about how surprised someone was to learn that the tzar and the czar were the same person.

It might me good to remember that there are different dialect pronunciations of Mafia, each pronouncing the first vowel sound slightly differently, like MAH fee ah vs. MEH fee ah.

Still, in a game, it might be good roleplaying to try to remember the preferred pronunciation, at least when dealing with the organization members. Not a group one wants to tick off.

Lantern Lodge

Man, maybe the people around here are pronunciationally unique.

There's:

"Zar-nee"

The extra syllable version:

"Zar-a-nee"

"C is a vowel" version:

"Skuh-zar-nee"

And the logical Snoop Dogg extension there-of:

"Skizz-arr-nee"

And occasionally the "c is a silent vowel" version:

"Suss-arr-nee" or "Suss-zar-nee"

Sometimes the Z is the silent letter:

"Scar-nee"

Or combining both:

"Suh-car-nee" or "suss-sar-nee"

Depending on whether you want a soft or hard "c" sound.
