Can't wait for next weeks blog, the rabbit apocalypse sounds quite interesting.

Goblin Squad Member

The early blog post did not go amiss!

Must have been exciting for the dev team to watch people experience all the work so far?!

I like the sounds of the break-down: Art, Design and Tech in the presentation.

Goblin Squad Member

I too am intrigued by the rabbit apocalypse.

Someone must like Prickly City

The Rabbit Apocalypse was one of Lee's exciting compounding tangents, which started as an off-the-cuff illustrative example and ended in a bunch of terrified bunnies. It happened organically over the course of a several minute speech. If I recall correctly, it went something like:

  • "If you're making leather armor, you actually need to get all the components from the world. So someone may have to go out and get rabbit pelts, then tan them for leather, so you can make armor..."
  • "Typical MMO questgivers might, like, ask you to go get 10 Rabbit Heads or something..."
  • "And there you are, throwing 100 Rabbit Heads into your crafting station to make armor..."

As Ryan pointed out, we think it might have gotten a little away from him by the end.

Well we all know that rabbits are varmints, even though they may be cute and fuzzy, but they are also quite tasty and that should not go without mentioning.

The fact that thy just may be a less efficient source of leather is a side issue. Perhaps a cow would have been a better example? But, characters in MMOs don't typically go out and hunt / gather cows.

The cow, although more practical, does not have the same imagery as a Rabbit Apocalypse, we all must admit that. So I say, keep it with the small critters! The more cute and fuzzy the better! I can see the line now.....

Hehe Mouse Leather Jerkin.

Now there's gotta be a monster hex with the Rabbit Apocalypse escalation cycle. Gotta. Heck, do it in EE just for kicks (also a great way to test the escalation game mechanic).

Now we're back into Dwarf Fortress territory:

This is a mouse leather jerkin. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of mahogany. It brandishes with menacing spikes of cotton fiber cloth and adamantine. It is encrusted with crystal glass, mica, and star sapphire. On the item is an image of Planepacked the granite throne in granite.

In Pathfinder Online the NPC character representing Lee Hammock will be a Hellknight Necromancer who creates the undead, to seek and slaughter rabbits and other small woodland creatures. Returning only with their heads, to then be crafted into leather armor, by his legions of slave laborers.

Lee "Heinous Flag" Hammock! Go fur it! (Pun intended).

My long Dwarf Fortress nightmare returns once more...with a vengeance. What an addicting game.

I now feel that there needs to be an advanced fiendish dire rabbit somewhere in the world. Sure, its just a bunny. Try to kill it for the pelt. Just *try* it.

That rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide!

Rabbits are in the game?! Sweet!!!

I'm coming to GenCon this year strictly for PFO. I hope you can give us something cool in that face-to-face time.

Thanks for the update and it sounds like PaizoCon was a blast. I hope somebody who attended stops by to tell us about the demo experience.

We should start a GenCon meetup thread.

I seriously wish I could, too. Perhaps I'll be able to next year, when the game is all that much closer to release.

arghhh can't wait for the video, the presentation and all the paizocon goodies! *blushes with envy for those lucky enough to experience the Con and the game...*

PaizoCon was a blast, I must say. So was the PFO demo. Myself and a buddy were actually able to get the honor of being the fist to complete a quest in the game... apparently something that the devs hadnt done. (they were probably too busy hunting rabbits)

As you might guess, the game was still really rough, as it was still just milestone 1. It was just implentations of things in the world. Graphics were nice, and the "shaman's white box" was... amazing... (you devs know what i am talking about)
Overall it reassured me that the kickstarter that i backed was worth every penny. waiting for beta in 2014 is going to be a long wait...

Goblin Squad Member

but wait... wouldn't leather tanned from the heads of rabbits be punctuated with flopsy little ears and perforated with tiny eye-holes?

That's it! A Hole-y Jerkin made just for Druids!

Goblin Squad Member

I'm much relieved by the description of what exactly the nature of the technical problem was. That job posting requesting expertise on middleware coupled with the first reports of technical problems had me seriously concerned.

Thanks for sharing!

You know, as the first fan on these forums to have played a version of the game, you'll now be expected to enter every single thread here and tell the rest of us the definitive answer to all our questions ;)

Harad will now be able to scribe a legend over vast areas of unexplored terrain in his unofficial PFO maps, saying "Here there be Rabbits!".

Kill 10,000 rabbits and win the 'Bunny Slayer' title!

Technical problem was me failing to get my presentation correctly loaded on my iPad (it was there the night before, I swear) followed by me being unable to get enough of a signal for my phone to act as a wireless hotspot so I could download it from the cloud, followed by Lisa not having the right connector to hook her iPad (which had the presentation) to the projector (my iPad has the old-style connecter, hers is the new style, my cable incompatible with her iPad), etc. In short it was a classic example of tech clusterf)*&)(.

I did have some takeaways that will be applied at GenCon. We need to do a brief "here's what the game is about" review before we dig in too deeply. There are some common questions that I think we can address in the presentation so we don't have to spend Q&A time on them.

And I'll be double-sure the presentation is properly loaded in advance.

For some reason this seems to happen more to techy people than to anyone else. Some sort of curse brought on by failing to propitiate the iGremlins, I expect.

I agree that for the GenCon audience in particular, a general overview will be very useful. See you there.

Only techy people can have that kind of problem. Regular people have techy people that have those problems for them.

Although I'm surprised you weren't able to source an appropriate cable by going to the queue and asking if you could borrow one.

Yet another application of crowdforging...

My presentation was all text (well, there were two pictures but they were a joke) so I just didn't want to waste any more time screwing around.

Demon bunnies the size of kangaroos spread from the Worldwound infest the Echo Wood!
The dragon Thelsterex becomes addicted to demon bunny blood and goes on a rampage!
Mad alchemists mutate thylacines and release them as demon bunny control enraging the local Druids!

Oh, to be a leather rider selling news.

As somebody who could not go to the 'Con, I now have the mental image of the Players running screaming from an army of Monty Python Killer Bunnies when I hear 'Rabbit Apocalypse'.

Maybe it's just my Inner DM rising to the surface, but the very image fills me with a dark glee.

So, I've been scouring the internet all week, really putting my search skills to the test, but no matter how hard I try I simply cannot find the song referenced by this week's blog title...

Deep Purple, wasn't it?

Or no: ZZ-Top Eliminator, the song after 'Got me under Pressure'.

Maybe it's "PaizoCon Report Suite" by The Grateful Dead?

Well... I was in danger of squealing like one anyway...

Goblin Squad Member

I think it is somewhere in "Margaritaville". In any case, we know you will find it Nihimon, if any can...

Would a bunny escalation potentially cause a shortage of trees in the area due to them ring barking all the trees like they did in Australia?
