when is it okay to use death spells and effects?

Carrion Crown

Okay, running carrion crown and on the first book. Im studying the other books and I have noticed their are some creatures who use death spells and some have instant death effects (skin stealer for example). When is it okay to use said things against ur party? I no in the 3 rd book, theres a certain some who has an aoe death spell.
Mmm they have them in their arsenal, but when is it a good time to use said effects and spells?

Seems like you have wandered into the PFS section of the boards. I'm assuming you weren't specifically talking in PFS since it is quite different?

Gah, sry I must be in the wrong section. Which section should I post my question in?

Welcome to the Carrion Crown section of the boards where your question is perfectly viable. Another good place for the question (in a more generalized form, perhaps) is the Advice boards.

Death spells and instant death effects can be very hard to use. Honestly, I'd ask your party about it. Tell them that this adventure is a very dangerous one and that there will be instant death. Based on reactions, you could choose to remove those abilities; the game is still dangerous but at least it won't fall to a single saving throw to decide the fate of a character.

Your players may also be ok with it and enjoy the idea that everything needs to be carefully approached and steps taken to prevent instant death. If they accept the idea, then you will be free to use the abilities in tactically appropriate times and against the character that is most dangerous at that time.

I have always been conservative with my monsters; I avoid blindness/deafness, bestow curse, and even picking on very hurt characters. I decided that it was too easy that way and told my players to expect more danger and violence. They have really enjoyed the more dangerous game (even though I haven't killed any of them yet).

As for the AOE death spell, that's actually a typo. He should be one caster level less than the stat block, which means he wouldn't have access to that spell. You can choose to bump him up another level or remove the erroneous caster level depending on your party's preparations.

Tyvm, I have asked the party and I got 3 that are all for it for the added excitement and then the other 3 are against it and dont believe anything that harmful of nature should be brought into the game. But everyone noes that tbeir charecter can be murdered at anytime and they are fine with that.
I told them that there are gonna ne chances for them but small amount of chances. Im thinking IF I do decide to do such, I will give hints or make it an obvious taunt if such a thing should go off.

Like a certain npc,, I will make it obvious thru details and dialogue like " said npc brings out a blade and cuddles it eyeing a certain person like cattle mubbling how sweet and nice ur flesh would look as an outfit or wrapped around said npc"" etc etc.
