Reign of Kingmaker!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Tonight i start a kingmaker/reign of winter/tales of the old margreve mashup.

My old game is still going just on a mini hiatus and the new one looks to be an interesting mix.

For starters:
-Heldron from RoW is in the hex between the barbarian cairn and the frog pond hex and starts as a mere hamlet.
-Levoca is a thorp from tales of the old margreve and starts in the hex beween the trap filled glade and Olegs.

The Swordlords are putting up serious incentives to get the Stolen lands explored and settled and Kesten Gares sees an opportunity to escape his troubled past. While he has no ambition to actually take a throne he does want to be a part of the group that does, he wants a fresh start. The charter however is open to all willing to undertake the mission and unfortunately a mercenary group from Irrisen has decided to investigate the charter.

Kesten has the 6 hexes in the upper right corner of the map already chartered but fears losing his lead to winter witches as the snows of winter are a full month from thawing. He hires the adventurers partly to make sure he has a second perhaps more powerful group should the Irrisen mercs decide to try something bold.

The opening fight is dialed to 11 with their being double the normal bandit count 2 dudes with Haps stats and a dual short sword weilding half elf with kessels stats. This is partly because they will have Jhod, Kresten, and his men along.

After the fight Oleg points them to Levoca and we do "Hollow" from tales of The Old Margreve. I'm kind of eager to see them squirm a little on that front.

I am intrigued by this, and I can see how these two APs can compliment each other. Was wondering if you move Heldren to the hex between barbarian cairn and frog pond, who are you considering to be the former owners of the lodge? Any groups in mind? I am really keen on two competing fey factions competing over the stolen lands, I.e Narissas hold, and now these pesky winter fey controlled by the winter witches. If Elvanna could get her hands on Brevoy, wow, she would be ecstatic. Can really show off the fey here. A concern I have, Although not a big one since KM is sandbox style and could take years of in game time to progress is once they go through the portal they are trapped and must follow RoW part 2 before having a chance at getting back to the stolen lands, I guess. What are your plans there?

Very cool, btw. My game is 5 sessions in, and because they are a exploring group, they wandered to Far East of Olegs, so I ran fallen fortress which they are about to defeat now. I dropped the old absolom fortress in the stolen lands east of Olegs. If they don't defeat the troglodyte Cleric they will have another menace to deal with in the east. Muha ha ha

heldron is in the same square as the statue/lodge. As to the former owners just a group of rangers basically there's a 2nd group of bandits under the stag lord and the Taldorian lady was in transit to become lord Varn's new wife.

No portal. The villain of book 2 sent the villain of book 1 as a party to try and steal the charter which is open to all who are willing to explore. she will appear in book 2 as an ally to the Sith which is going to get really nasty.

Book 5 will actually be a reskinned Rasputin as a head occultist in the Technic League which can see our PCs allying with Ivoretti...

Weakness of Kingmaker- Sandbox nature gets slightly disjointed with overarching metaplot.
Strength- It's flexible and the PCs get a kingdom and armies.
Weakness of RoW- Its a little Gonzo and you're ultimately saving an evil witch.
Strength- Great dark Fairy tale themes. Compelling evil villains

They help eachother veryh nicely thus far. 3 sessions in and its a rollicking good time. I'm also mixing in tales of the Old Mergreve and will be running carnival of tears.

Cool. I am a little worried about XP if I mash the two up, since we play once a week for on average 3-4 hours a session. My group gets a little ornary when they don't level (they love their XP) :), which on average seems to be once every 4 sessions, so basically once a month. As a DM, I like to provide adventure opportunies, but I feel I should limit it a bit to meet their XP demands. We are on the medium XP track and 5 players. I could reduce Random encounters also. So, I guess somethign else I could do is award 10% less or something to account for the extra adventuring in Irrisen, and the stolen lands. But the more I read RoW, the more I want to do this.

If you run the numbers on the regular quests it doesn't add up without some random events.

I also discarded XP and level them as I pleease..

You can always subtract some EXP from what you give them?
I mean, I sometimes as a DM (who hands out exp, not just has them level) simply forget to add some exp, or put it at 75% without them knowing. :)

As I am playing in Reign of King Maker with good old Solspiral as GM, i can safely say the two mash up VERY well, book one of King Maker the first time around (run by another gent) was not nearly as fun as it has been this time. Reign of Winter fills up some of the annoying sandbox holes in King Maker rather nicely I think.
