I have a character who will be level 13 at the end of Eyes of the Ten which I will playing in at a Con in the beginning of August. I am also running Rise of the Runelords in my homebrew game and generating PFS credit for that.

It looks like I will be able to apply the follwing sheets to my 13th level character:

“Fortress of the Under Jorgenfist (areas B1–C9) 12–14

Making him 14th level, and

“Sins of the Saviors” Runeforge (Parts Three–Ten) 14–16

Making him 15th level.

My questions are:

1) Is this correct?

2) Do I get a sash and tiara upon reaching 15th level?

Liberty's Edge 5/5

This is correct. And you'd be level 15 with 2 XP towards level 16.

You could also play Academy of Secrets and Tomb of the Iron Medusa to do the same thing.

Grand Lodge 1/5

You can get your PC all the way to 20, if you want. Its possible.

Silver Crusade 4/5

3 people marked this as a favorite.

But no sash and tiara until you hit level 20.

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

Congrats. My highest is 10, working on 11.

I thought the highest one could reach was 19.2 what can a character do at level 19 to reach 20? Edit: Oh wait they could GM the shadow lodge or lantern lodge retirement if they are 19.2 to reach 20.

Silver Crusade 4/5

There's a tier 15+ on Race for the Runecarved Key that's worth 1 xp, and presumably that's the same with this year's special, as well.

Yeah. If you have been playing for the last 2 years, and did everything in precisely the right order, you could legally achieve level 20. I am uncertain if anyone has done so, however.

4/5 ****

The special this year caps at 15 according to it's info page.

Grand Lodge 1/5

You can always do We Be Goblins and go from 19 2/3 to 20. +1 exp to any PC, congrats, you are now lvl. 20. :p

Grand Lodge 1/5

But there are things other than that that you can also do to get that last exp. There are even a few lvl. 18 groups running around. Apparently one in the Bay Area here in CA is also in the 18+ range.

Silver Crusade 4/5

Nope. We Be Goblins can only be applied to a level 1 or 2 PC.

How does gaining higher levels in PFS work exactly?

Meaning, I have heard 12th level is when you retire your character, but then I have also heard (like in this thread) there are story arcs to take you beyond 12th.

Is there some sort of qualifications to play these scenarios to take you above 12th? I know you need to stop exactly on 33 XP, but are there other qualifications as well?

I only ask because it just sounds like going beyond 12th is rare or only certain people are able to do so and that you are supposed to normally retire at 12th.

Silver Crusade 4/5

There are modules for higher levels that are PFS sanctioned. Plus, the retirement arc, which is 4 scenarios that take you from exactly 12 + 0 to 13 + 2 (the first part is double length, so it's worth double XP).

Silver Crusade 3/5

It's just that there are lot less options for the level 12+ characters. No scenarios are legal for them, just a couple of modules and now adventure paths. The retirement arch (Eyes of the Ten) is not actually required to be played as far as I know, you could reach higher levels without it.

Ok, thanks.

It's just I've heard people say more than once "You only play to 12th level for PFS, so 'x' feat, ability, spell, etc. is not worth taking at 11".

But it's good to know you can go above 12th.

3/5

My understanding is that a character, once they've played the retirement arc, are only legal for "retirement" or "seeker" modules, and not legal to play sanctioned APs or other sanctioned modules. Is this not true?

Grand Lodge 1/5

You get to lvl. 12, do the Eyes of the Ten for 5 xp. Now you're playing in the 13 2/3 level.

Take a lvl. 13 module, for +1 lvl. finish at 14 2/3
Take a lvl. 14 module, for +1 lvl. finish at 15 2/3
Take a lvl. 15 module, for +1 lvl. finish at 16 2/3
Take a lvl. 16 module, for +1 lvl. finish at 17 2/3
Take a lvl. 17 module, for +1 lvl. finish at 18 2/3
Take a lvl. 18 module, for +1 lvl. finish at 19 2/3
Now to get that last 1 exp, that's a bit tricky but there is a scenario that can be done for lvl. 10+ that will give you 1 exp to drive you into lvl. 20. You'll have to research past threads, but there is a path to 20, I just can't come up with it of the top of my head. And the modules have to be set just right to get things done in the correct order.

For the most part, by playing sanctioned pieces of Adventure Paths, such as Reign of Winter, and Shattered Star, and the new Runelords Material whch has tiers post 12.

Grand Lodge 5/5

There used to be a level cap to PFS play at level 12. The only thing your character could play was the Eyes of Ten series and then that was it.

About a year ago (maybe more, I forget) the campaign level cap was removed and characters were allowed to advance using the Sanctioned Modules. So now the limit is level 20 which is a game rule (not a PFS campaign rule).

You don't get a sash and tiara at level 15, but your character does get the title of Seeker at level 12.

4/5 5/5

If you play one of the PFS specials that has a 12+ tier (now capping at 15, I understand), you'd be able to get that 1 XP you'd otherwise be missing for 20th.
My group played Race for the Rune Carved Key after EotT to reach 14th level even, then played Academy of Secrets to reach 15th even. I believe we're now on track to reach 20th.

I don't think you are, you'll get to 19 but I don't believe you'll hit 20, you need to be 19.2 when you hit 19.

Pretty much this. Our current group has 2 characters each at 16th level. In the coming weeks, we'll have 1 at 19th level, and 1 at 17th level.

Character 1: run the moonscar module, now at 17th level.
run the witchwar legacy module, now at 18th level.
run rise of the runelords part 6, now at 19th level.

Character 2: run the shattered star part 6, now 17th level.

In my case, the 19th level character will make it too 19.1, as he is a lantern lodge character and I will be applying my GM credit to him. A shame we already ran race for the runecarved key on those characters.

Well, that's too bad. We'll just have to hope something new gets sanctioned that will get us the rest of the way there.

Here are the actual things you can run/play and 12th and above. Parts 5 & 6 of Reign of Winter should be sanctioned shortly after they are released as well. Not 100% sure on the tiers for the two specials.

Scenario/Module/AP Tier Exp Gained
Ruby Phoenix Tournament 10-12 3XP
Eyes of the 10 Retirement Arc 12 5XP
Season 4 Spec Race for the Runcarved Key 12+ 1XP
Season 5 Spec Seige of the Diamond City 12+ 1XP
Academy of Secrets 12-14 3XP
Tomb of the Iron Medusa 13-15 3XP
The Moonscar 15-17 3XP
The Witchwar Legacy 16-18 3XP
RotRL Ann Ed. Fortress of the Stone Giants 12-14 3XP
RotRL Ann Ed. Sins of the Saviors 14-16 3XP
RotRL Ann Ed. Spires of Xin-Shalast 16-18 3XP
SS Beyond the Doomsday Door 11-13 3XP
SS Into the Nightmare Rift 13-15 3XP
SS The Dead Heart of Xin 16-18 3XP
RoW The Frozen Stars 11-13 3XP

Grr. That was a nice, readable table when I pasted that in there!

Silver Crusade 4/5

So can you apply a GM Star replay at 19.2 to replay Race of the Runecarved Key or Seige on the Diamond City to make it to 20 lvl?

4/5 5/55/5 **

A character is only allowed to have one copy of each chronicle applied to them, so you won't be able to put a duplicate chronicle on them.

Good point. But if you played it on a different character somehow, it would work I guess. I actually haven't played either was just researching higher level play and saw the case of the Earl of Grey Park above, and wondered if there was a way to fix it. I guess the answer is future sanctioned content. Thanks for un-jumbling my thinking.

Parts of Emerald Spire will also take you above 12th level. It will be sanctioned soon (TM).

Yes, as long as the PC you are playing it with/applying GM credit for it to does not already have a chronicle for that scenario already.

Which sort of sums up my problem with wanting to replay the Ruby Phoenix Tournament. All of my PCs in the appropriate level band already have chronicles for it. GM credit on one, bringing him to 12.0; and player credit (under the old grandfathered rules, when it first came out) for my other PC at 11.2. My next highest PC, 12th level or below, is at 8th, so won't be legal for it for some time to come...

One of our high level group is in the bay area, the rest of us are in the sacramento area. We played runelords part 6 to stop our PCs at 19th.

Lantern Lodge 2/5

My highest is my cleric at 14 after retirement I GMed the season 5 special and applied it to him. Just waiting on getting to play the higher lvl modules if/when we find time to do so.

With the RotRL credits I have he could be 15 havent decided if I want to or not yet

Actually, it's not even a game rule. There are simply no detailed descriptions for class levels 21+, but there are rules for going beyond level 20 in the CRB (pp. 406-407).

Also, there are spells that have effects with a CL cap over 20.

But realistically speaking, there are not many campaigns that even go up to level 20.

The Exchange 4/5

There are also many ways to increase caster level. Paizo's game design believes that 20/m10 is the maximum character level, and everything they publish is based on that assumption.

Just re-reading this thread. And noticed the now capping at 15 for Race of the Runecarved Key or Seige on the Diamond City. So there is no current way to 20. That is unless they issue a lvl 18 module that tiers at 17-19. So unless I missed it 19 2/3 is the best you can do.

Could you link that ruling? This is the first I've heard of it.

I believe there's a level 20 out there. I know of a few 19s (myself included).

As far as I know Race for the Runecarved Key is still playable at any level, and is the only PFS legal thing to play at 19.

Sadly, my current seeker got my GM credit for Race, so he will not be making 20th level. We'll see if I get whatever GM credit seeker all the way there.
