Riddles of the sphinx

Advice

I am about to have my campaign enter a riddle battle of PCs vs. a Sphinx. I am looking for advice. First, what are good riddles you've used? What are good resources for riddles? Second, does this kind of encounter need game mechanics, or is it just straight RP? Third, how well or poorly have riddle-based encounters worked in your games?

Spoiler:
A man.

This is really more of a GM vs players encounter unless your players are really determined to play their characters. If you have players who believe that just because they have 7 Int written on the sheet doesn't mean the character is dumb, then it will be GM vs players. If you have players who are more into the roleplay aspect, it could be more fun. The hard part will be coming up with or finding riddles that every RPG player hasn't already heard.

Here are a few real world ones I like:

If you have three coins totaling 40 cents and one isn't a nickle, what coins do you have?

Spoiler:
A quarter, a dime, and a nickle. As you see, neither the quarter nor the dime is a nickle.

January and March have 31 days, April and June have 30. How many months have 28 days?

Spoiler:
All of them.

How many of each type of animal did Moses bring on the Ark?

Spoiler:
None, Noah built the Ark.

How many birthdays does the average man have?

Spoiler:
One every year.

If it were me, and I wanted to keep players, I'd avoid puzzles based on English semantics...

My players hate riddles so much they specifically hired a dmpc sage who specialized in riddles just to answer them...spoilsports!
