Rum and sugar cane

Skull & Shackles

Grand Lodge

The "Skull & Shackles" adventure path mentions rum and grog, but not the sources of sugar cane juice or molasses that is used to make this rum. Are there sugar plantations located somewhere in the Shackles? Or is sugar cane grown on plantations located in Sargava, the former jewel in the crown of the Empire of Cheliax?

Historically, pirates also consumed bumbo--a drink make from rum, water, sugar, and nutmeg. Sometimes also flavored with cinnamon.

Are the Free Captains of the Shackles also paid for their protection in agricultural commodities produced on the plantations of Sargava?

It doesn't make much sense that Sargava produces pineapple, but not sugar cane, coffee, rice, cotton, tobacco, and indigo.

The Isles of the Shackles supplement lists some islands with sugar plantations, most notably the Rampore Isles. Most of the islands have some sort of agriculture, probably enough to supply local needs. But, of course, unless you really want to be playing "Papers and Paychecks" you probably buy your rum by the barrel without worrying too much where it came from.

I tend to picture Mediogalti Island as a source for sugar cane and rum.

P.S. in all fairness, it's probably because I like to imagine a weird scenario in which Red Mantis assassins team up with inquisitors of Cayden Cailean to oppose Chelaxians plotting to impose Prohibition upon an unsuspecting world...

P.P.S. Sargava IS probably a far better source for sugar cane. That or Bloodcove / Mwangi.

Ahhh... yes, Kora Island in the Rampore Islands chain has rice and sugar plantations. Thank you, Orfamay Quest.

I have been adapting "The Savage Tide" adventure path from Greyhawk to Golarion.

Good catch, hard to make rum w/o sugar cane.

Unless the players have a continual compulsion to crack jokes about why the rum is gone.

Usually, it's because the alcoholic dwarf arcane trickster drank it all while the rest of them were asleep or snuck past them to drink it all while they were watching.

If you have ever had cheap Puerto Rican rum you would care where it came from. That stuff is nasty! Release the Kraken!

Not really. Cheap <X> rum tends to be nasty irrespective of where it comes from. You want drinkable stuff, pay for drinkable stuff.

I fear you've been lead astray, neighbor.

While I will grant you that Kraken is better than that crap-tastic Myer's, Cruzan Rum is the rum of choice for those more discerning of something other than grog, most especially their blackstrap rum - which makes the best rum n coke you will ever experience :)

Have not had the pleasure. Best I have had in the past is Bacardi Black label. Will have to put it on my list to try. Yeah, Myer's is nasty also. Back when I was drinking Cuba Libras on a regular basis I was stuck with Ron Rico and Castillo, rot gut!!! Could not get enough Rose's lime in it to kill the taste:(

Sailor Jerry's. Accept no substitutes.

When the fighter who worships the Lucky Drunk asked what the rum smelled like I told him "Paint Thinner". He promptly made a dex check and got rid of it.
