Mechanics of the Magus' Spellstrike

So as a person that's recently new to Pathfinder, I rolled my first Magus awhile ago.

Today was my first real time playing him at level 2 - where we gain Spellstrike as an ability. My DM and I came into conflict on the mechanics of Spellstrike, and I was wondering if someone could inform me on how this is supposed to work.

The way I interpreted it is based off of the words that the description gives:

Instead of the free melee touch attack normally allowed to deliver the spell, a magus can make one free melee attack with his weapon (at his highest base attack bonus) as part of casting this spell.

Now what this makes me think of is this:
-Cast Shocking Grasp to be delivered through weapon
-Attack with weapon to discharge Shocking Grasp with Spell Damage + Melee damage (counting as the one free melee attack)
-Follow up with regular standard action attack for the round.

My DM disagrees with me, claiming that this is completely overpowered for level 2 - which I guess I can agree with. Though by the way he interprets it as just being a melee version to deliver a touch attack, wouldn't I just be better off with Combat Casting and delivering an actual Touch attack with the spell, followed up with the melee attack at -2? Why would I increase the miss chance of my spell? By his interpretation, I would personally view Spellstrike as being useless.

Any insight would be great.

That's not quite right.

In order to pull off what you've done, you'd have to full-attack, using Spell Combat. All of your attacks take a -2 to hit, but you get to attack using your Spellstrike ability, if you cast a touch attack spell, as well as your full attack, either before or after.

What your turn looks like instead is:
-Spell Combat, casting a spell and full-attacking at a -2 to all attacks followed by either

-Cast Shocking Grasp, to be delivered through the weapon
-Attack with your full attack action

or

-Attack with your full attack action
-Cast Shocking grasp, to be delivered through the weapon
