Item for knowledge checks?

Advice

Scarab Sages

Hello fellow pathfinders!

I am new to pathfinder and i was wondering if there is any item to help me with my knowledge checks(something like special diary or beastiary?). ATM i have a PFS character which is a monster hunter/witcher/mercenary and by level 6 i can make all knowledge checks with 10+ but it costs too much skill ranks.

If there isn't an item for such thing, can i create my own beastiary as a roleplay option? For example after killing a ghoul can i "study" it so when i see another ghoul later act like i succeeded my knowledge check and ask GM about their weaknesses etc.?

P.S. I am playing a Bladebound Kensai Magus which is planning to dip into Lore Warden at level 4(Currently level 2).

There's an item called the mask of a thousand tomes.

It gives you a +10 competence bonus on knowledge checks, but it takes 10 minutes to use it and you're blind while you wear it.

Thank you for replying! You just saved me from wasting skill ranks(About 10)! That mask will be great to roleplay with! :)

No matter how awesome an item you have, note that you still need to have at least one skill rank in a knowledge before you can do anything more difficult than a DC 10 with it.

The type of guidebook you describe would probably be considered a masterwork tool (+2 to one type of Knowledge per book).

I have got Breadth of Experience feat, so i can make knowledge skills untrained. So it is not a big deal for me :) Also nice! I will get masterwork tool for each knowledge! :)

Thanks for the reply Ben! :)

you can get headbands of vast intelligence keyed to a knowledge skill if you like.

Sovereign Court

Mossy Disk Ioun Stones give a +5 competence bonus to one knowledge skill for 2500gp each.

Thanks for the replies! But carrying a mask and masterwork tools seems cheaper and also more logical for a monster hunter than ioun stones or headband :P

In Golarion you can buy copies of the Chronicles of the Pathfinder Society. I believe that they're 50 GP each and provide a +2 circumstance bonus to a specific knowledge skill. You do need time to read though them before you make your roll, so they won't help with identifying monsters in combat, but are helpful for nearly everything else.

My son has a half-orc barbarian who carries the complete library in his backpack. He can't really use them himself, but since he has a ridiculous carrying capacity, he provides it as a service to the rest of the party.

Since this is for PFS, keep in mind that…

A) As a wondrous item, you must encounter this item in a scenario or have it listed on one of your Chronicle sheets. Someone more familiar with the scenarios released after Ultimate Equipment can say if it has been included in one or not.

B) If you do have it on a Chronicle sheet, you still need to purchase it. With a market value of 10,000 gp, you would need 27 Fame (PP).

This is a great idea if you've got the carrying capacity. My dwarf has the whole set, too. You'll need to bring your ISWG with you to games, but I'd say it's worth it for the +2 to all out-of-combat Knowledges.

Uhoh. My player got his hands on a nearly-complete set of Pathfinder Chronicles from decades ago in one of the APs. They're not presented like they give you any kind of bonuses or have any value -- just a room dressing. I can already hear him asking me if he can benefit from them or sell them ...

Assuming he has a volume covering each Knowledge topic, that's ten volumes which he could potentially sell for a total of 250 gp, or keep (weighing 10 lbs. total), providing a +2 bonus should he take the time to refer to the proper volume. Up to you if there are more books that either overlap in bonuses or have no mechanical value…

I will look into that Pathfinder Chronicles but i guess it does the same thing as Masterwork Tools. So i will just buy Masterwork Tools and make them a single item like a beastiary or diary.

From what i know i only have to get to 27 fame to purchase it off the market. No chronicle sheet required. I need chronicle sheet to get it BEFORE 27 fame :)

Ah, I see. That could be spelled out better in the text, I think. I think I have some purchases to make…
