"Winter" Ranger?

Advice

I'm about to start PCing in a Reign of Winter game and want to play a ranger. The Urban Ranger has always been my favorite archetype but I suspect I'll need to be prepared for more than leaping from rooftop to rooftop (which was more by bag before). Are there any "Northern" or "winter" archetypes I should look at for the ranger? I figure certainly, I can just take "Cold" for favored terrain, but I'm wondering if you guys had any other thoughts that might be useful.

It's not really a "winter" archetype, but the Warden archetype from Ultimate Campaign starts you out with a Favored Terrain. I think that might be a decent fit for what you're looking for. HOWEVER, and it's a biiiiig however, you give up your first favored enemy AND all your combat style feats to get the archetype.

Not a big deal at all if you wanted to jump into the Horizon Walker prestige class as soon as possible, but if you're looking to go full ranger all the time, those losses might give you pause.

I'm not sure of any archetypes specifically for cold regions. But if you want an archetype, Guide looks like it might be useful. However, I do dislike the Ranger's Focus ability that replaces favored enemy.

If an archetype is not a must, just go with Cold as your first favored terrain like you said and maybe think of going with some racial traits geared for the cold such as the elf subracial Arctic Elf or Heart of the Snows for a human.

Guide is a good archetype - unless the campaign is centered around a particular group of foes, I think Ranger's Focus is better than favored enemy. The ability to choose a foe and then get a significant combat bonus against them is pretty useful. I played an archer, and would frequently pick a target and then completely wreck them.

You also get better bonuses from favored terrain, as I recall.

@Donald Robinson Oh sick, Hearts of the Snows is great cause I'm human.

@SteelDraco I don't know much about the AP, other than it's Northern and such.

This character is based on the Urban Ranger I loved so much. He's very Zorro/Batman and has an alternate identity called The Black Lash. He would swashbuckler and lash around from rooftop to rooftop. Super fun. Now he's going up North to look for pulpy "winter villains" from his past (I named one Dr. Gooseflesh).

I'm imagining him as adapting to his new environment, so kinda like Assassin's Creed 2 to Assassin's Creed 3, when you could do all that "tree running"? Plenty of survivability too. Mostly want him to be just as versatile and agile and prepared in the wilderness as he was in his home city which he protected.

That's definitely more of an NPC class, being a meatshield for the villain caster.
