Hey guys, I was looking at our deities' "power levels", Greater, Lesser and such, and I noticed that there are no good-aligned deities that are in the Greater category, but there are either Lawful/Neutral Evil, True Neutral, or Lawful Neutral Greater Deities. This either needs to be balanced or should greatly reflect the world we are creating.

Just my two copper pieces.

Of my Good deities, I think only Blastari and/or the Amalae may warrant a promotion to Greater. I don't know if that helps.

Totally your call as their creator. If you give a definite say-so, I will update the document accordingly.

Also a new page, so I guess I may as well provide another link to the document.

Alignment: Chaotic Good
Domains: Charm, Fire, Glory, Chaos, Good
Subdomains: Love, Honor, Friendship, Revelry
Areas of Concern: Relationships, Passion, Celebrations, Best Friends, Lovers, Parties, Life.
Favored Weapon: Fighting Fan
Sacred Animal: Birds
Sacred Colors: Red and Gold
Holy Symbol: A red phoenix on a gold background

Pakalao is the god of relationships, both those between friends and those between lovers; fire, phoenixes, and volcanoes; parties and celebrations; and passion, drive, and commitment. He resides in a temple in a volcano where he is surrounded by phoenixes, songbirds, fire elementals, and angels. His worship is most common in tropical locations and his temples are usually open and airy, decorated with silk tapestries and streamers of red and gold and candles, and filled with song and music. These temples have frequent celebrations, parties, and festivals, to celebrate religious holidays, as well as marriages, anniversaries, birthdays, babyshowers, homecomings, new years, and even such things as remaining unharmed during a storm or attack, winning a sporting event, a phoenix residing in the temple eiries, a successful harvest, or simply a beautiful day. These festivals include feasts of wine, pork, and tropical fruits and nuts, music such as brass or percussion instruments, torch jugglers and fire eaters, and dances in elaborate costumes composed of red and gold silk, large straw hats, precious stones, and flowers. Worshippers often make offerings to Pakalao before weddings, marriage proposals, childbirths, sporting events, artistic competitions, going to war or on a journey, or other similar events.

God of decadence, indulgence
Favored Weapon: Heavy Mace
Power level: Minor

"The Tengu tribesfolk of the Eastern swamps speak of a being known as Akhanot, who sends his messengers to attempt to sway virtuous people off the Path of Light. While obviously an analogue for Flidotia or Sarlindur, it should be noted that there are several differences in the local legends:

+Arkhanot's agents favor the forms of birds, as His realm of the Abyss is rumored to be an island in the sky.

+Unlike Nanissa, who attacks the mind, or Flidotia who must be sought out, Arkhanot always offers choices to those at their weakest moments. In the local myths, acceptance leads to damnation while refusal to salvation.

+Whole tribes out here have given in to Arkhanot, freely murdering and looting other tribes for their own selfish desires. These tribes seem to be the cause of the recent raids against our client-states.

This report concludes with the usual request for more funds and recruits, as Kazakios went missing in the swamp yesterday and none of the tribesman were able to find him. Now I must go; dinner is ready, and the pork they serve here is to die for (though I have yet to find where they keep their swine)"

Ghongnasur, The Final Inferno

Elder elemental fire shaped by the buffeting winds of Chaos and inspired to Divine Horror through the endless gyre, Ghongnasur is the flame to consume all. Those who pledge themselves to the Final Inferno do so out of deep madness or even deeper desperation. There is no prayer book and there is no philosophy other than this: all must burn! The faithful prolong their own immolation only long enough to burn all they can before they are finally called to cast themselves into the flames and join their god in eternal wailing agony. Answered prayers come in the form of sudden conflagration and the screams of the burned. Adherents could identify each other by their charred clothes and hair and the general ordure of burnt offerings, if their insane rage towards all things didn't prevented them from murdering almost everything they came into contact with.

More additional notes.

Thalakos, the Silent Guardian
When incarnated, Thalakos takes the form of a seemingly empty black hooded cloak. When called to battle, the Silent Guardian pulls Silence, a shining silver bec de corbin, from its cloak and wields it with deadly efficiency. A curious feature is that it is impossible to determine the method it uses to hold things, as no body apart from its black cloak is ever visible.

Its herald is Korrimere, a unique psychopomp that resemble a cross between a spider and a humanoid woman whose face is usually hidden by a mourning veil. Among Thalakos' other notable servants are a pair of advanced marut inevitables that focus their efforts more on those who would violate the dead. It is also served by a small number of archons, angels, and inevitables, and a sizable host of psychopomps.

Thalakos and Aposarpha share a fair amount of common ground, but differ too greatly in their policies regarding treatment of the deceased to be anything more than unhappy allies in the fight against undeath. Likewise, Alissandra is seen as overzealous, and is always watched carefully when working together. Folsey can often be counted on to help protect the resting places of the dead, as can Dir'ao, provided they are dragon graves. Ditana's clergy often run the graveyards that Thalakos' work to protect, and they usually have a good working relationship. They have similar arrangements with Golthan and Zalsha's worshipers. For enemies, the Silent Guardian counts any and all who would disrupt the final rest of the dead.

Vuni, the Ever-Fertile
Vuni incarnates often, and her default form when doing so is a mass of dark red tentacles, though she can twist her shape into more (or less) pleasing appearances.

The Ever-Fertile does not possess a herald, instead sending an avatar when the situation warrants it. The servitors she sends to aid her followers usually are normal creatures with the eldritch or mutant templates, though the abomination, amalgam, manimal, psychic, and teratocephalos templates are also common among her children.

Vuni is on polite terms with Davane, as his laws preclude the denial of shelter purely based on appearance. She has had friendly relations with Kanathis, Polyphenna, and Senathay; after they actually met her, at least. Vuni approves of Estarianthanon's efforts to allow mortals access to the stars, but the latter has avoided any association with her. Strangely, she has a similar relationship with Ergen, wishing to offer aid but knowing it would never be accepted. She is opposed to the majority of her void-born kin (such as Chranix and Tytha), as they would harm or destroy the living worlds she loves so much. The Ever-Fertile's relationship with Shrvanoxdi is perhaps the most tragic. Both creatures of the void that seek to protect the mortal worlds, the two nevertheless find themselves at odds. Vuni fears her counterpart, and the Woven Watcher views her as just another monster seeking to defile the mortal worlds.

Also, because I never mentioned it before, Kobold Cleaver is the one to blame thank for the Amalae's affinity for elves. That was totally not a thing until Kobold's write-up of the Rotting World. Thank you for the idea I have shamelessly appropriated.

Further additional notes.

Blastari, the Righteous Forge (Greater Deity)

Blastari is most commonly depicted in two different ways. The first is a muscular man (usually shirtless) generally engaging in forge-work. The second, more recent version is the same muscular man clad in shining armor with flaming warhammer in hand and a pair of blazing golden wings at his back. He adopts the first when called upon for peaceful purposes, and the second for the fight against evil.

Blastari has two heralds, one for each aspect. His first is an advanced procyal agathion named Guu. His newer herald is a mighty solar angel named Sunhammer. His servitors include numerous agathions and angels.

The Righteous Forge is on good terms with the other good-aligned deities, and has been fairly surprised to find himself drifting into a leadership role among them. He is violently opposed to the gods of evil and destruction.

His sacred animal is the raccoon (or the tanuki in some parts of the world).

If anyone objects to him getting the head councilor position among the gods of good, let me know.

Liberty's Edge

* Warissa has spends too much time competing with Borehelos to contribute much to a council of gods.
* Cassyros doesn't care to be involved in councils of any sort, preferring independence to do what she will.
* Felwyrn Frossheim forgot to bring his paper ballot so he fashioned a new one, but unfortunately it turned out to be made from an ancient screed that summoned an eldritch abomination from another dimension that is now intent on selling him a timeshare. He'll get back to you after he deals with this latest problem.

Dormagna would not object to nor would she support him.

Her focus on the spiritual and occult matters of souls, thus her portfolio of dreams and nightmares, along with her inability or unwillingness to physically manifest has alienated her from almost all the gods. She only interacts with Yenna and Tytha, who she fights over the sleeping minds of mortals. Even if one was to interact with her, after she departs one would remember the event like one could remember a dream the previous night; even other gods have this problem when interacting with her. She is a difficult goddess to reason with, and she'll not listen to the advice of others, despite their alignment or portfolio.

This god would likely have been Emberbreath's rival at one time, and may have council ed him to good and law. Ophelia wouldn't care. Master Ang would probably find his duality confusing.

Even more additional notes.

The Amalae (Senathay, Tarna, Zalsha) (Close Pantheon) (Intermediate Deities)

The Amalae usually appear as tall, heavily tanned, green-eyed, elf-like beings of surpassing beauty. As they rarely wear clothing, their fusion of male and female traits are clearly displayed (more conservative societies usually censor such depictions to hide any "objectionable" bits).

Senathay is the most stereotypically feminine in build of the three, and their flowing blue hair reaches their ankles. Tarna is the most stereotypically masculine of the three, with red hair that reaches to their shoulder blades. Zalsha has the most balanced combination of gender traits among the three, and has silver hair that reaches down to their thighs.

Senathay's herald is a gancanagh azata 16th-level bard named Amadre. Tarna's herald is a lillend azata 13th-level bard named Rylis. Zalsha's herald is a ghaele azata 7th-level cleric named Maiavel. When acting as a group, they send a veranallia azata named Erariaroen as their herald. The three command azatas of all kinds, and Zalsha is also served by many psychopomps.

Quingala, the Queen of the Pack
Power: Greater
Favored Weapon: Bite or Longbow

Quingala is an ancient deity; she has existed since the time of Gor Makon, and her worship occurred even in the days of the Cyclopes Empire. Quingala preaches cooperation amongst all for the benefit of all, not out of societal obligation but because it is the right thing to do. This message has always been popular among the lower classes, and today a goddess once worshipped only by nomadic tribes is revered across the world by those seeking to ensures the survival of the whole.

Additional notes #5.

Estarianthanon, Silverwings (Demigod)

Estarianthanon was a lunar dragon before his ascension, and such is still his preferred form, though he is perfectly willing to adopt a humanoid shape to avoid hysteria.

Silverwings has very little in the way of a power base, and his few servitors are the exceptions rather than the rule.

Estarianthanon does not interact with other deities often. He is on good terms with Leukon, and sees the more powerful deity as something of a mentor figure. Though Vuni has expressed support for his teachings, he has done his best to distance himself from her.

Ergen, Old Stone, Father Sky (Intermediate Deity)

Ergen's physical body is completely immobile, and only his spirit is free to wander. (The possibility exists that Ergen simply chooses not to animate the immense statue that is his body, as it has been shown that he has the capacity to alter the internal structure.) His spiritual form usually appears either as an imposing (though insubstantial) regal dwarf or as a mighty storm cloud. His influence in this form is limited to touching the minds of his followers and manipulating the weather.

Old Stone's herald is a unique air/earth elemental named Wind and Stone. Another notable servant is Lightning Bringer, an elder anemos. His servitors consist primarily of elementals of air or earth.

Ergen recalls little of the time before he fell upon the world, only remembering tumbling through the void for what felt like an eternity. Due to his similar origins, Arkesht has drawn Ergen's curiousity, as has the speculation that the Fire in the Deeps may have been involved in his creation. Other deities focused on creation, such as Blastari and Estarianthanon have earned something resembling friendship from Father Sky.

Actually, I think it would be cool if different cultures spelled it differently, so everyone could use their favorite spelling!

Manarion for Ophelia, Menniarwun for Emberbreath and Master Ang.

I feel the elves will call it Menyarun. Davane's people will use Menniaron. Other than that, it would mostly be the same as the surrounding region.

So the PCs were Telzuchi operatives aiding in the recolonization of Imperial territory trying to fight a cult of Izreus.

They:
+Attacked the mayor in a duel, resulting in the Paladin's falling and subsequent death. The mission became less "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and more "Suicide Squad."

+Gave charity to a gnome trying to build a staircase to the sun

+Evaded a Tengu ambush, capturing them and throwing them in a pit.

+Successfully frightened a ghost.

+Encountered hallucinations (because Izreus) at the worst possible time, and fought them off handily.

+Shanked one of the bosses. The other was grappled and then beaten with a hammer.

We had a great time!

I don't know about an official planet name, but maybe it could be "The Many Are One Campaign Setting?"

My apologies for my long-term absence on this thread.

Regarding the missing sixth subdomain for Aposarpha -- go with Day.

I haven't gone back and looked over everything I've missed yet, but I wanted to float a slight process change that I integrated in my ongoing work with this:

Rather than starting with the alignment rolls, I built a shuffled list of all 37 domain options, and I use the first domain generated on that roll as my focus domain (for the two subdomains), and then go from there. I think I did that just to help me focus on the proper lens for interpreting the die rolls -- use that first roll and the resulting subdomains to hone in on a more focused result. I don't know yet if my results have actually been improved by this shift in operations, but I do like it better.

Glad to see y'all are still getting it done over here! :)

Holy Symbol: A Heart pieced by a Thunderbolt
Proverb: Love is a Storm
Weapon: Longbow
Tissana is a Goddess who encourages people to follow their hearts no matter the cost. Secret Affairs, midnight rendezvous, passionate storms of reckless abandon. She encourages lovers to live in the moment and pursue the joys of passion and the secret thrills of forbidden love. To take comfort in each other and warm themselves in the night with a passionate embrace. While many of these affairs may lead to disaster Tissana believes that lovers will be happier together for a short time than to live a long life suffering apart.

Her priests offer shelter to lovers, provide places to meet in safety as well as help to hide their affairs from jealous spouces or protective families.

Subdomains:

Tiyena, Mistress of Cinder

Favored Weapon: Battleaxe

Tiyena was a human during the primeval era, when the world was young and restless. She and her fellow tribes people hunted in the darkness, and all were equal under the coldness of the black sky.

Then came fire, and differences emerged; light and dark, cold and warm, life and death. To Tiyena, the fire was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, and she gave herself to it willingly, its tender caresses reducing her body to ash.

Her legend lived on, a cautionary tale not to trust in the gifts of the gods blindly. But some took away a different message; that the fire was a cleanser, burning away the ugly world of the physical to make way for the pristine beauty of the spiritual. And so Tiyena awoke from her slumber aside the flame to be worshipped as a goddess.

While her faith was spread the farthest during the Cinderback Invasion, the subsequent outlawing of her faith has driven the priests to more subtle means. A home here, a structure there. Attempting to spark in just the right place to set the world aflame.

For sooner or later, the world must know Tiyena's cleansing kiss. It is simply a matter of time.

I noticed something with the deities: the more powerful ones tend to not interact with the material plane directly. As in...Borehelos and Warissa (based on my understanding) live on Maniaron. You could reach out and touch them. Whereas, say Xol Akhmul does not; he's busy fighting to save the sun.

Maybe this growth in power/alien-ness to the material is connected to Divine Madness?

Liberty's Edge

Thoughts?

5 people marked this as a favorite.

It does make sense; there is probably an upper limit to the power a god can obtain while still keeping direct ties and actively interfering with the mortal world, and eventually must move on to other planes to grow further in power. Such deities would probably end up looking to expand their cosmic domain at that point, and would come into conflict with powers mortals might not fully understand or be aware of.

Another possibility is just age; younger deities haven't had the time to either grow in divine stature or stumble over the cause of the Divine Madness. They probably still have unfinished business or legacies to attend to in Maniaron, but as they grow older their interests diversify to cover many other planes of existence and they become less active in any one plane.

As for Borehelos and Warissa specifically, I left it ambiguous as to whether they were still physically present in the mortal world. That's still a point in favor of your thesis, as it supports the notion that physically departing Manarion is a normal part of a deity's growth in power. That said, both Neodoric and Eosshorm are definitely still physically present in Manarion.

(also sorry for my absence, I've been traveling for the past two weeks and haven't had consistent internet access; I'll get the documents updated today)

Well, Alissandra and Nabblik were crazy before they ascended, but your arguments seem to fit my other deities pretty well (except the ones that have always had an alien mindset). Might be another reason Blastari's gotten that "head councilor" position among the gods of good: he's powerful and hasn't gone insane yet.

On a rather different subject, I came up with a monster (and a template) for this setting, but I need help with the crunch. Here's what I've got so far:

Vuni-Spawn:
The creature before you resembles nothing so much as a writhing mass of dark red tentacles. Regardless of its apparent total lack of sensory organs or any recognizable “front”, it has clearly noticed you and is regarding you with whatever alien senses it possesses.

Vuni-spawn are the literal children and descendants of the void-born goddess Vuni.

A Vuni-spawn’s telepathy also gives it great insight into the feelings of others (+10 Sense Motive to read emotional states). Feelings of happiness draw them like bees to honey, while most negative emotions repel them. Fear and sadness, however, draw a Vuni-spawn as surely as joy, and they will attempt to provide comfort to the distressed. Sadly, this tends to make the situation worse and the Vuni-spawn is forced to retreat in failure.

In addition to their drive to deliver comfort, Vuni-spawn also possess a strong reproductive instinct, and, due to their malleable anatomy, are capable of breeding with any living creature. The results of such unions could be indistinguishable from an ordinary member of the other parent’s race, Vuni-touched (an inherited template that can be applied to any living creature), or more Vuni-spawn (or any combination of the above).

Vuni-spawn are incapable of entering a home without first obtaining permission from a resident. Such permission is binding, and nearly impossible to revoke once given. They also find it extraordinarily difficult to speak falsehood, though the more devious among them can still manage to be deceptive while also being technically truthful. Most Vuni-spawn treat vows and oaths as binding contracts and will not break them willingly (but again, the more unscrupulous ones find ways to adhere to the letter while disregarding the spirit of their agreements).

All but the cruelest Vuni-spawn do their best to avoid conflict, and will only resort to violence when no other option is available.

Redotting to find again later.

Nasquba, She Who Broke the Barriers
Major Goddess of Infernal Contracts, Eidolons
Favored Weapon: Spiked Chain

Nasquba was born into slavery, one among thousands in the ancient Grajjanto Empire. Her childhood was filled with unimaginable horrors, and learned at a young age the strong took their power from the weak as they wished. She vowed that one day none would be stronger than her.

As a young woman, whispers in her head helped her to escape, and from the brand that had once marked her as human property sprang something. A creature which bore the same mark, offering to teach her the mysteries of the outer planes. She accepted, becoming the first human to master the art of summoning.

When rumors came of someone capable of conjuring creatures out of thin air (thought impossible in Grajjantonian philosophy), the Emperor demanded she be found and forced to teach him. Upon arriving, Nasquba and her eidolon wreaked havoc upon the Imperial palace, teaching her craft instead to newly-freed slaves.

The Grajjanto Empire was destroyed, but the slaves had been tricked; as part of the power gained through their Eidolons, the summoner forfeited their soul. Nasquba, granted a sliver of each soul taken, burned her mortal form and chose the shape of a goddess.

That was half a millenium ago. The connection to the Eidolon home plane from Maniaron is now stronger, and more benevolent Eidolons can come through to serve the righteous and free. But those who would sell the souls of theit fellow man still venerate Nasquba. Proof of her continued existence is plane to see; every summoner who would contact the Outside must bear on them a brand, just as Nasquba did.

Been a while since I made a new one of these. I've got an idea for a deity, let's see if the dice cooperate.

1d9 ⇒ 1 LG
1d31 ⇒ 8 Destruction
1d31 ⇒ 12 Healing
1d31 ⇒ 19 Protection
1d31 ⇒ 30 Water
1d100 ⇒ 45 m
Nope. Oh well, I'll run with it.

Halakan, Iceheart (Lesser Deity)
Lawful Good
Portfolio: Winter, cold, solitude, healing, defense
Domains: Good, Healing, Law, Protection, Water
Subdomains: Ice, Oceans, Purity, Restoration, Resurrection, Solitude

A god of winter and the frozen wastes, Halakan is a taciturn and anti-social deity. When not cloistered in his frozen palace on the Plane of Water, he spends his time wandering the cold and remote regions of the mortal worlds. He is a renowned healer and defender of those in need, but obtaining his assistance can be difficult. In those rare cases when he personally provided aid, he has always departed immediately after the crisis was concluded.

Far easier to find (though still few in number) are his clergy. Halaks almost never build temples or fixed places of worship, instead choosing to wander, giving aid where needed before moving on.

Halakan's holy symbol is an ice crystal with a dusting of windblown snow spiraling around it. His favored weapon is the light pick. The favored colors of his followers are white and blue.

Iceheart is on good terms with Feira, Harkon, Sinaa, Spiritwhale, and Vesper, and has little to no contact with other gods. He is an enemy to Capszura, Narukalor, Tarszuri, and Vasathan; but most especially his sister Hakath. One of the few surefire ways of getting Halakan's attention is calling for his help in opposing his sibling's depredations.

Relegos the Many-Winged
Intermediate God of flight, birds, self-discovery
Favored Weapon: Repeating Crossbow
The now-extinct Skyfolk were a nomadic people, drifting along the warm Southern winds as their whimsy took them on angelic wings. Though most held "those below" in fear, Relegos was one of the few who took time to speak to those not blessed with flight, and came to fall in love with one of them; a woman named Taljura. Ultimately, this love proved his undoing, as a jealous "Lowfolk" noble ambushed Relegos with a group of his followers and tore off his wings before killing Taljura.

Broken and alone, Relegos took to wandering along the same winds as his people, though he knew they would never accept him. Gradually, the Skyfolk died off, due to inbreeding, disease, and assimilation into the Northern Strix population. His love and his people dead, Relegos marched into the jungle seeking to die. On this last travel, he came upon a great ruin (described in his holy text as "Older than the stars themselves"), and found within a power that could restore his wings...and so much more. Relegos soon found himself in control of a power within himself that he didn't fully understand, and his great strength in accomplishing his Last Nine Deeds (a series of legendary adventures, one for each of his wings) ensured him a throng of worshipers when he left Maniaron for the stars.

Relegos' sacred colors are gold and scarlet. His holy animal is the falcon. Devotees of Relegos can be found in any major city, teaching magic and Skyfolk history.

You're short two subdomains and a power level there. :)
