Gunslinger Feat from 3.5 Campaign Setting?

Advice

One of my players wants to take the Gunslinger feat from the 3.5 version of the campaign setting. I told him I'd think about it.

My impulse is to say no - the feat was designed before the newest rules on guns and the gunslinger class were developed. Also, guns are powerful enough weapons that removing the drawback of not using them in melee would seem more powerful than the same thing with a bow or crossbow.

However, I wanted a second/third/fourth/etc. opinion on this before I told my player my decision. Any thoughts?

I'm standing right in front of you maybe a foot away. You have a second to act before I pull the trigger. Tell me how easy that would be to attack before getting shot.

The same could be said for a bow or crossbow, but those provoke AoO as well. In fact, after more research, the ability to avoid AoO with those weapons tends to require high level abilities - 9th level for an Archer archtyped Fighter and 13th level for the equivalent Crossbowman. And the Sword and Pistol feat allows AoO but with a boatload of prereqs... which, right there, pretty much answers the question. Gunslinger would make Sword and Pistol useless.

From what I understand, the feat you are talking about already exists in a new form:

Deft Shootist

So if he wants that ability just have him take that feat with its prerequisites.
