Cauldron of Overwhelming Allies

Reign of Winter

Does anyone else find this thing incredibly powerful?

It's Twin spell for a Summon Monster spell (any level), once per day...For 4500 GP?!? Twin spell is almost as potent as quicken...

It's in essence a Pearl of Power for one "brand" of spell, weights at least one pound, and needs to be set up prior to the casting of the spell. No, it's not THAT incredibly powerful.

Pearl of Power? Why do you say that - as I read it, it's another version of a metamagic rod.

Using a focus is a free action and the Cauldron is called out as a focus. What you get is Player A casts Summon Monster V, and gets the initial spell (1 monster from Summon Monster V/1d3 Monsters from Summon Monster IV/1d4+1 Monsters from Summon Monster III) and 1d3 Monsters from Summon Monster IV...

Yes, only works for Summon Monster/Nature's Ally spells and only once per day, but it works for levels 1-9, and Twin Spell was a +4 level metamagic. A greater quicken rod (+4 level metamagic, works levels 1-9, 3 times a day) costs 170,000gp... Divide by 3 to equalize the uses per day, and you're left with 56666gp. Twelve and half times the cost of the Cauldron (4500gp). Is it really that much of a limitation that it only applies to Summmon Monster Spells?

I'd say yes, it is that much of a limitation.

First, summoning spells are (at least in our campaigns) rather rare.

Second, the effect is even more limited because it gives you the worst of the three possible options for summoning. It doesn't give you two of the big, useful creatures, and it doesn't give you overwhelming hordes of popcorn that will slow down the enemy. Instead, it gives you too-few pets that are not powerful enough individually to be that useful.

Considering that the Summon Monster and Nature's Ally spells are typically the only way PCs summon things, that's not a limitation. The text seems to indicate that you can carry this thing around with you, you don't worry about any fluff, and you have an extra 1d3 critters 1/day. This is a powerful tool for a conjurer.

Anyone that has used extensive summoning can see that an extra 1d3 guys can be significant, whether or not they are weaker than you. This is only 1/day, though. As far as disadvantages go, it is a little bulky, but nothing too bad for dedicated PCs.

I don't think I'm concerned about it, but I'd have to think about it if there were a dedicated conjurer in the party. If I did decide I were concerned about it, I'd simply chage the requirements of using it. Make the cauldron weigh fifty pounds instead of five, or maybe require an action or two of preparation of regents to summon the things you want. That means they would have to really plan ahead to get good use out of it, which is something I encourage.
