Lethal with Blade and Blast!

For years, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game fans have lamented the absence of an 'arcane paladin' type of class—one with full base attack bonus, limited spell access (to arcane spells instead of divine) and a small set of interesting, flavorful special abilities.

Lament no longer! The Expanded Battle Scion is just such a class!

The Expanded Battle Scion includes:

  • Force Blaster and Bonded Scion archetypes

  • 5 new feats including Awakened Arcane Bond, which imbues your arcane bond object with intelligence and will

  • A Prepared Spell Tracking Sheet, usable by any prepared spell caster

  • New rules for legendary magic items, and 3 new items: the legendary shield, sword and armor of the first battle scion

If you dream of scattering your enemies with a powerful force attack before finishing them off with lethal bladework, New Paths #4: The Expanded Battle Scion is for you!

And let me say, congrats Marc!

High time this one got the update it deserves, and a glorious cover, too.

Liberty's Edge

Thank you sir! I’m REALLY excited about the Battle Scion and I hope everyone digs it!

The nice thing about this is that there is plenty for everyone, even if you don’t end up playing a Battle Scion! The feats can be used by just about anyone (wizard PCs will *definitely* want to check out the Improved Arcane Bond and Awakened Arcane Bond feats! The prepared spell tracking sheet is of use to wizards, clerics, Druids ... pretty much any prepared spell caster.

I like it. It's kinda like a martial Warlock.

Yeah, I can see that ...

Glad you like the Battle Scion ... enough to do the first review up in the products forum? :)

Oh I'm not a reviwer type unless "Dude! This class is badass!" is considered an indepth review ;)

Do have a couple questions:
Does the blast act in all ways like a MM? Range, affecting incorporeal, etc? Can he split the damage up to different targets?
Would you consider giving Combat Casting at 4th, when he can use it, and come up with something else at 3rd?

Ha! I think "Dude! This class is badass!" is a FINE review. Please post it right away! :)

On to your questions ...

Combat Casting actually is of use to the Battle Scion at 3rd when he gets the feat - Combat Casting helps when you use a spell or spell-like ability ... and Force Blast is a spell-like ability!

And, speaking of Force Blast, the ability says, in part "... can unleash a single blast of arcane force that automatically strikes a foe, as magic missile. So, aside from the things specifically detailed in the ability as being different, such as damage etc, things like range are as magic missile. Force Blasts cannot be split among different targets nor do you get additional bolts per blast - the ability states that you "unleash a single blast of arcane force". However, if you take the Force Blaster archetype, you DO get to fire more than one bolt per Force Blast at higher levels!

Oh, regarding Force Blast and incorporeal creatures ... they do indeed affect them, just like magic missile. The ability also states that Force Blast "is a force effect".

Hope that helps!!!

It does, for the most part.

Where do you indentify force blast as a SLA?
It just says it's a standard action?

Quote:

Force Blast (Sp): As a standard action, the battle

scion can unleash a single blast of arcane force that
automatically strikes a foe, as magic missile. The force
blast deals 2d4 points of damage at 1st level plus an
additional 1d4 points of damage for every three battle
scion levels beyond 1st (3d4 at 4th, 4d4 at 7th, and so
on). This is a force effect.
For purposes of overcoming spell resistance with his
force blast, the battle scion’s caster level is equal to his
full battle scion level. A battle scion can use this ability
a number of times per day equal to 3 + his Intelligence
modifier.

Is it understood to be a SLA because it's modeled after a spell?

EDIT: OMG...the (Sp) ok... sheesh <facepalm>

And this is why I don't do reviews...

No worries, a new class is always full of quirks and questions.

If it were all totally familiar, well, where's the fun in that? :)

Why certainly, since you asked so nicely! :)

Speaking of ... I just saw that rhe Expanded Battle Scion cracked Paizo's Top Ten Best Sellers list for this week, which is [i]awesome[/] considering it only released sometime in the middle of this past week!!!

Thanks so much to everyone who purchased this!!!

Wow, not a lot of discussion on this one, but the PDF seems to be extremely popular: it came in at #2 on the Top Ten Best Sellers list for this week.

Also, I think these guys make good villains. As martial characters, they are well-armored. As force blasters and with a few key arcane spells, they are a ranged threat with some twists.

Debating whether to stat one up as a twisted goblin warlord from the Wastes...

Liberty's Edge

Extremely popular and #2 on the Top Ten Best Sellers list works for me! :)

Liberty's Edge

Some very positive reviews of the Expanded Battle Scion!

Thanks everyone!!!! :)

Potentially stupid question. Where is this Top Ten Best Sellers list? I see the one for Paizo products, where's the 3rd party one?

Thanks,

The 3PP Top 10 Best Sellers list is included in the weekly email from Paizo.

I'm not really sure where to find it on the site: it might be generated from Paizo's sales data but not posted on the web.

Webstore Gninja Minion

There isn't one specifically for 3PPs on our website, but there is one for all Pathfinder products here.

Ahh! Thanks!

I've seen it on the email before. I thought it was also on the site.

Yep, as Wolfgang (and Liz) said, I'm referring to the 3PP Top 10 Best Sellers list in the weekly email from Paizo :)

Liberty's Edge

And speaking of Paizo's Top 10 3PP Best Sellers list ... Expanded Battle Scion! made it into the top 10 again this week - woo hoo! :)

Quick update - a slightly revised version of the Expanded Battle Scion went live recently.

Although I personally still like the idea of the battle scion's force blast ability automatically hitting as magic missile, I ultimately saw the wisdom in changing it to a ranged touch attack.

A nice side benefit of that change was it allowed me to add a nice little bonus to the battle scion's Arcane Aura class feature, so I'd call it a win-win! :)

Oh, and to carry on a theme ... the Expanded Battle Scion is still on Paizo's Top 10 3PP Best Sellers list! Thanks to everyone that purchased it so far! Woo hoo! :)

NAd thanks to said revision, the class will find a home in my campaign plus I could upgrade the review. :)

End's review must have influenced me, cause when I received the update notice, the force blast errata was the first thing to come to mind before reading the update. Good job to all parties involved.

Liberty's Edge

Thank you sir!!! :)
