"Freedom Fighters" Campaign

Homebrew and House Rules

This might be better off in the "Advice" board. If so, feel free to move it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for assembling a "freedom fighters" adventure? Are there any existing products (APs, Modules, 3pp settings) where this is a theme?

What did you find to be most interesting about the game or product?

I would like to go about making a Dune like game, and don't have all that great a grasp on making the threat seem more appropriate.

Well I've always found that if you're going for "freedom fighters" you really need to start by detailing what they're fighting against. Once you've developed the "Evil Empire" of which there are all sorts fo flavors of, you can then extrapolate who would be fighting against that.

I would suggest some sort of Tyrant, because then you can use that singular villain as the seed for all that is bad about whatever you're fighting against. Make the society an extension of the tyrants flaws and hungers.

The tyrant doesn't necessarily have to be the real evil. He can be a puppet ruler or one who has harsh, but fair laws, while being oblivious to the goings on in his kingdom due to preoccupation with his own hedonism or even due to a focus on foreign affairs.

Having done the latter, I focused on playing up the brutality and corruption of the legal authorities, politicians, and nobles.

I'd completely spaced on puppet kings. Which is strange because I'm usually such a fan.

Big fan, myself. My favorite is the "oblivious ruler," which I use very rarely.

The reason I'm so fond of it is the moral dilemna it can provide a "good" party: they fight "the man" only to come down to the "final battle" and find out he or she (the ruler) is not what they thought (and the PCs are not what the ruler thought).

It can provide for a lot of interesting roleplay. Do you help the ruler to rebuild the nation? Do you depose the ruler and put the next in line in control? Do you take over?

Best used sparingly, but it had a definite impact on my players after the one (and only time) I've used it.

Thanks for the comments, Woodengolem and Da'ath.

I do like the idea of a kingpin who institutes local rulers, but the opportunity for the oblivious ruler may prove too tempting.

Thanks again, you two.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. I don't run APs/modules/adventures that aren't self-created for my own setting, so couldn't offer any suggestions with regard to those.

Start with cheliax and go from there?
In Fact, the first adventure of council of theives can offer a fair amount of inspiration in this direction. Though the adventure doesnt go into full fledged freedom fighters, it has that sort of feel, especially early on. You just have to expand the scope to beyond 'making westcrown a slightly better place to live' and more 'bring down the evil empire'. But the initial npcs are good, and there are lots of interesting potential hooks in there.

In a campaign I'm working on I have one of the Guilds that's ruled by what basically amounts to an Orcish rock star. He's considered by everyone to just be manipulated by evil influences within the Guild. In reality he's the absolute iron fisted tyrant in control of everything and only pretends to be a puppet.

It's one way to have your cake and eat.
