Starting Pathfinder

Hey there,

Some friends and I are kind of jumping into Pathfinder head first, I've personally never played any type of tabletop games (aside from card games) in the past, so I am completely noob to it.

I was wondering if anyone could present any advice on building a character, story, etc, and what to expect from my first game (aside from the multiple hours creating our characters xD)

We do have one very knowledgeable and seasoned player GMing for us, I'd like to know a bit of the basics before jumping in, so I can lessen the load of questions I have..

Start with a core class and just keep it simple. If all of the players are like you and are new to the game then whatever character you play should be balanced.

Do not get fooled into thinking that spell casters are harder. I find that a well put together fighter will need more knowledge of math and tactical situations than a wizard does. For a spell caster you just need advice on what spells to use.

How many players are there?
What are the other players looking at making for a character?
What type of character do you see yourself playing in general terms not just game mechanic terms?

Hey, great to see another player joining the ranks!

Hendelbolaf's advice is pretty spot on.

As far as character stories go, I'd also start simple. Just have a phrase or two that defines his/her personality (Naive? Egotistical? Generous?) and generally what their background is (City slicker? Sheltered in a wizard's tower? Wandering the wilds?)

My girl friend and I are getting into the game, we both have played d@d and I see alot of the same rules as that game. We are looking for a group in our area to play the game with. As for tips, the Beginner Box is a great place to start. Once you've played through that, grab a Core Rulebook and a 1st level module (like THIS one) and have fun!

I find this panel discussion (opens an mp3), titled "Building A Better PC" from PaizoCon 2012 extremely insightful for character creation. It was provided by Know Direction podcast. If you listen to this, and check out everyone else's suggestions in this thread before making your first character, you'll have a pretty darn good start.
