Your thoughts on the Player's Guide?

Rise of the Runelords

Is it a solid handout for the group before the game starts? Are there things that should be added or taken out? Changed?

THOUGHTS!

It should be fine as-is, considering its exact purpose is for players to read before the campaign starts to help them come up with characters. I mean, remove whatever you'd like, but it sounds like you don't have anything in mind. If you're worried about it spoiling something later on, it doesn't. It points out that there are giants, but that's about it.

The first version has Xin-Shalast on the map, but it was removed, and so that older version is unavailable, and even if it wasn't fixed, you'd just say that there's no way the characters would know where Xin-Shalast is, it's easy enough to find at the start of book 6.

For players that are uniniatied to the world of Golarion, I actually prefer the original version of the Rise of the Runelords Players Guide from 2007.

You'll need to ignore the "crunch" part of that guide (like the "Equipment" and "Feats of Varisia" sections), as they are all for 3.5, but the broad-stroke information about the races and cultures of Golarion, and the primers on Varisia and Sandpoint are, IMHO, superior to the Anniversary Edition versions. The overview of the races of Golarion in this book is also pretty good for newcomers to Golarion.

The big strength of the Anniversary Edition are the Character Tips and Campaign Traits section on pages 3-6. The rest of the guide is a primer of Varisia, and while somewhat interesting, isn't that useful for players.

Another great resource to add is the Players Companion Varisia: Birthplace of Legends. It provides updated stats to the equipment section from the original Players Guide for PFRPG rules (and recycles much of the art from that section). It also includes more feats and a bit more background on the two human cultures native to Varisia: the Shoanti and the Varisians. It includes overviews on the four largest cities in Varisia (Korviosa, Magnimar, Riddleport, and Kaer Maga), and some other settlements as well.

Thanks guys! I'll let them read it as is. I guess I was mostly worried about it killing some of the mystery and intrigue of coming to a new setting, or ruining something down the line, but it seems safe.

Also, we are still using 3.5 so the old version works perfectly. Thank you! :)
