Beginner Box

Hi all,

My son and I have decided to create a Beginner Box Barbarian using the additional Beginner Box Player Pack Material from the website. We're curious if there are any recommendations on Skills Feats and Equipment.

Thanks Everybody,

-Anthony

I don't have beginner box rules or the additional player pack, but I can make suggestions that should be 90% valid.

First figure out what kind of barbarian you want to make. Usually they are big-weapon swinging savages made of muscle and anger. Other versions exist that are more in-line with a kind of savage ranger, focused on nature and animals. You can also go the armored variety that uses a shield and aims to actually avoid being hit time to time.

The skill list is Acrobatics, Climb, Craft, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Knowledge (nature), Perception, Ride, Survival, and Swim; you get 4 + int points a level. I'd say Acrobatics are always useful, as is Perception. The other two depend on the style you want to play.

For the muscle mountain, Intimidate, Climb, and Swim all fit rather well (in that order, unless you think there will be a lot of water in the game).

For the savage ranger, Knowledge (nature), Survival, and Handle Animal can all come in handy. Especially if the party doesn't already have an outdoors type (ranger, druid).

For the armored variety, skills aren't a core part and I'd choose based on how much the character likes the outdoors or likes to be scary.

Equipment is pretty much either a giant sword/axe or a shield and battle axe/broadsword. Armor is debatable. He can use any kind of light or medium, though he's slower in medium. Breastplate is going to be the best he can wear for straight AC, but thematically you may just want to wear some light armor for the speed. Medium also makes the acrobatics, climbing, and swimming a bit harder.

Feats are basically anything that makes you do more damage. Power attack and its chain being key. I can't easily answer this since I don't know the feat subset provided to the Beginner's Box, but so long as you focus on things that make it easier to smash stuff or barbarian feats (ones that require you to be a barbarian, like extra rage, if they have it) you are pretty safe.

Remember: You want to do lots of damage. Avoiding being hit is secondary (if even considered); that's why you have the largest HP die in the game.

Got it. Awesome!

Thanks!
