Newb GM for PFS - looking for starter scenarios

GM Discussion

Hi guys,

I'm a newb GM fullstop. I've been playing Pathfinder as PbF/PbP for the last year, including a dozen PFS scenarios.

I was wondering if you could advise me what scenarios (apart from the First Steps trilogy) would be good starters for someone completely new to GMing.

Many thanks in advance.
Paul

Good morning Paul!

I'd say look to Season-1 for good starter scenarios. That was the first season produced with Pathfinder RPG rules, but isn't overwhelmed by options from the advanced books.

I have a personal favourite in the "Devil We Know" series. It gives a series of 4 linked modules, lots of RP oportunities, combat, and background. If your players didn't know about the Aspis society before... they will now.

Assault on the Kingdom of the Impossible is another favourite.

Easy (but Fun) Scenarios for new GMs:

* Mists of Mwangi
* First Steps 2
* The Citadel of Flame
* The Penumbral Accords

There's also a list in the GM101 package of low-prep scenarios; I'd encourage you to take a look at that. Actually, as a new GM, I'd encourage you to take a look at the whole package - there's some great stuff in there.

One more thing: ask an existing GM to mentor you. Ideally, pick a scenario that they've GMed, but not played. Prep it, and talk through your prep process with them. Then, have them sit at your table when you run the adventure, and debrief with them afterward.

And good evening to you. Thanks for replying, Matthew. I guess I should have said that I don't want to start with a series as this is my first GM outing, and if I blow it then I'd feel better stopping after 1 if there was no further goodies.

Having said that, I hope I don't and I'll keep that in mind for a second foray.

Thanks, Jeff. I have the GM 101 PDF, so I'll read it carefully. I'll be doing this by forum post, so I'll have plenty of GMs to ask questions of, as well as time. I have already asked quite a few for advice.

EDIT: Interestingly the GM 101 PDF says that "The Penumbral Accords" is a complicated scenario to run.

Paul, you wrote "...if I blow it then I'd feel better stopping after 1..." Please try not to think this way- just prep and do the best you can. No GM is absolutely "perfect" out there... as long as your players have a good time, that's all that matters.

You've already said you've taken time to read the GM101 PDF, which is *way more* than a lot of folks have done. Reminds me of something someone told me once when I was talking about the fears of becoming a parent- "The people who shouldn't be parents are the ones that don't have these fears- you will be fine because you are concerned about being a poor parent."

You're going to be fine.

PS- Jeff's idea of having a GM mentor is a good idea also. +1

That's a known error in the document, actually. The authors have said that it ended up in the wrong list by mistake. Trust me, it's not a complicated scenario. :)

Hey Paul, and I would like to welcome you to the wonderful world of GM'ing Pathfinder Society!

I started GM'ing Pathfinder Society after the group of friends that I gamed with, got too big and we were actually becoming a hindrance to our weekly Game Day because we all wanted to play together. We would all sit down and say, "Ok, we need a GM." After a while, we were told it would be awesome if one of us could GM. So I picked up GM'ing. My first game that I ever GM'ed was "The Frostfur Captives". It was an incredible experience. The players enjoyed it and I had a blast with the RP. 10 months later, I am 20 games away from my 5th star. I love GM'ing that much. But, the reason I am typing this is because GM games that you really enjoyed playing in. Think of ways you can add your own personal flare to the game.

Some good, easy scenarios that I think are really good for new GM's include:

- Master of the Fallen Fortress (Free and is a nice, easy game for both players and GM's)

- We Be Goblins (Free, incredible RP, and alot of fun for both sides of the table....And you get to play as goblins :-D )

- Silent Tide ($3.99, The very first scenario. This scenario has a little bit of everything for the players and walks the GM through step by step on how to 'roll with the punches' if the PC's do something that was not expected.)

- The Frostfur Captives ($3.99, Season 3-01. This scenario is short, sweet, and to the point. As a GM, it gives you plenty of room for RP to really immerse your players in the mission at hand)

(Two Parter)
- Before the Dawn Parts 1 and 2 ($7.98 for both, Season 2-01 and 2-02. This two parter is incredible! These scenarios bring interesting combats, good RP opportunities, and some really cool, unique pieces that you WILL NOT FIND in any other two-parter.

These are just a couple that I find the easiest to run. Of course there are more, these are just a sample. If you would like more information or have any questions about GM'ing, feel free to e-mail me (stlpfs.vl@gmail.com), I'd be more than happy to help out a up and coming GM!

Good luck and may Desna smile upon you!

If you're looking for prep ideas, feel free to check out the Share Prep Drive and see if there is anything there can you want to/can use.

PFCBG, I think your link is broken. It's taking me to my Google drive. On closer inspection, I think you've just linked the URL to Google Drive in general, not the particular Share Prep.

Well, hello Paul; fancy meeting you here. (Of course, when I saw the thread, I immediately thought it had to be you).

I don't have a lot to add regarding which scenarios to run, as I've only started GMing with the Season 4 Scenarios (which are a blast!). However, I noticed Jeff mentioned the Citadel of Flame as an easy scenario to start with. I wanted to let you know that if you choose to play that one, you would have an excellent resource over on RPGGeek. The author of that scenario, Steven, is very active on that site and he would be a great resource to field any questions you might have. Just some food for thought!

I think I fixed the link, thanks :)

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words and suggestions. Now to choose something.

How much time would you say it would take to run this 2 parter? Could it be done in 6-7 hours?

I think you "probably" could if you didn't want to RP and semi-railroaded your players. The first part is definitely worth the RP. I don't want to spoil it, but trust me, your PC's will have a blast with it! The second part, you don't want to tone down either.

I have been able to run both of these at 8 hours flat without skimping on anything.

Enjoy!

Thanks Nathan.

Was sort of thinking of trying to do them back to back one night, but it doesn't really sound feasible.

But, will have to keep 'em in mind!
