Natural attacks not adding up..

Rules Questions

Ok so I read that to calculate natural attacks one adds their BAB to hit but unlike melee attacks (which are with a manufactured weapon) one doesn't add their strength to hit as well.

As such can anyone explain to me how does the Treant get from its +9Bab to get its +17 to hit?

I believe that it is an oversight that they didn't include "add their Strength" to the to-hit portion of the natural attacks. I think the point of mentioning "full base attack bonus" was just to say that it is as accurate as the character can do (and not like an iterative).

RAW, it looks like Strength isn't added. RAI, I am 100% certain that Strength is supposed to be added, and all of the natural attacks on all of the monsters reflect that.

For the Treant:
9 from BAB +9 from Strength +1 from Weapon Focus -2 from Huge size = +17 to hit

you add strength to your to hit for natural attacks. Unless ofcourse you have weapon finesse, then you can add your dex (all natural attacks are considered light weapons).

Ahh, thanks Beta!

Grand Lodge

Note: They are melee attacks. Melee attacks are noted as using strength as the base stat to add to the attack roll.

It is not "left out". It is assumed that you already know how melee attacks function. Those rules are in a separate section.

The Exchange

To clarify, your assumption was a bit off:

Not all melee attacks are with a manufactured weapon. Melee simply means "not ranged."

Melee attacks come in two types: natural and manufactured. Natural attacks are a part of the creature (bite, punch, gore, etc.) while manufactured attacks are done with something you pick up and use (sword, gauntlet, chair leg, etc.).
