[Jehova's Arena, Test] Fight the Thirty-Seventh, m'Shimu vs. Garr'ak

Play-by-Post

m'Shimu and Garr'ak enter the new pit to complete silence. There are a few scribes sitting in the huge stands, watching carefully for any actions, but the air is still and the footsteps of the combatants echo off the ceiling in the immense room. m'Shimu stands in the north, Garr'ak enters from the south.

m'Shimu 1d2 ⇒ 2, Garr'ak 1d2 ⇒ 2

m'Shimu A11, Garr'ak L11. Initiatives and pre-fight, please.

ROLG THE RED

m'Shimu steps haltingly back into the arena, tongue flicking curiously at the altered structure.

The snake, wearing black and red mottled lamellar armor, a ceremonial punching knife and a spell component pouch tucked into its belt, steps forward. In one spiked-gauntleted hand he carries a longspear, and in the other a javelin. From his shoulders and back hang a few slings carrying what must be another dozen javelins and shortspears.

His unblinking eyes stare at this newest opponent, and he hefts his spear in a strange gesture.

Arbiter:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Initiative 21

A hulking man would enter from the south. Standing closer to 7 feet tall than 6, one might say he was an intimidating figure in and of himself before taking into account the long-poled hammer that he carried with him. Dressed in chainmail, he seemed eager to start.

Arbiter:
Initiative Roll 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

Initiative 17 - After you good sir.

ROLG THE RED

:: Surprise Round ::

The snake wastes no time, hurling the javelin across the width of the arena in a startlingly accurate throw. As the javelin hisses through the air, the snake disappears from sight.

Arbiter:
Throw javelin (-2 for beyond first range increment)
Vanish
5' step to B.10

Javelin Throw 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 3 - 2 = 17
---> Damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Throws javelin, disappears.
Attack 17 (vs. your flat-footed); Damage 9

You're up.

ROLG THE RED

Also, just to get all the facts I can, is Garr'ak human? And any other visible weapons/armor?

Garr'ak would watch the javelin arch its way up through the air before descending down into his thigh...

With a roar, the hulking man would discard his lucerne hammer before starting forward. As he moved, he would reach over his shoulder to pull forth a greataxe as open-centered discuses clambered about his body.

Almost upon his enemy, he would veer behind a pillar to remove himself from his enemy's line of sight.

Arbiter:
Hit Points 15/24
Current AC 18

  • Free action drop weapon into A11
  • Move action to move to F12 not D12 - Miscalculation on my part
  • Part of move action to draw greataxe

As Garr'ak closes the distance, his racial heritage seems to mark him as human.

Garr'ak ends his movement in F12 not D12 - Miscalculation on my part

ROLG THE RED

That should have been your surprise round action. You can do all that with a single standard or move action?

Dropping a weapon is a free action, so yes.

ROLG THE RED

Your speed is 40 in chainmail? Doesn't that restrict your speed? Or are you wearing a chain shirt?

My apologies. I had chainshirt in my head. Give me a moment to adjust his movement. He will still be moving up.

F12 is where he will end. Still using the pillar to put some cover between the two of them.

And again, my apologies. I tend to play things with armor that does not reduce their speed or with abilities to prevent it from doing so.

ROLG THE RED

no problem. I know it's possible to get a character who moves that fast... i was just surprised by it. Working up a post now.

Yeah, had a cleric in full plate that ran down a monk once. Then the monk had to go and climb a wall.

Lol. Lame! Monks should know when they're beaten! :D

:: Round 1 ::

A second javelin hisses through the air towards Garr'ak from next to one of the columns (thrown from B.10). Once again the snake disappears.

Arbiter:
Draw Javelin
Throw Javelin
Vanish
5' step to C.10

Javelin 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
---> Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 3) + 4 = 13

Javelin Throw (from B.10), then disappear.
Attack 22 (vs your flat-footed), Damage 13

Your turn.

Indeed they should

That's not a clear charge lane is it?

Nevermind, the invisibility prevents charging as is.

Garr'ak would growl as yet another javelin pierced his skin, this time however it hit him in the chest.

Catching a brief glimpse of his opponent, he would quickly move up so that he might be able to attack.

Move to C10

Starting to shake with rage, he would bring his axe down with all his strength upon the area he had last seen his opponent.

Arbiter:
Hit Points (Modified by rage) 6/28
AC 18 as he enters the square, 16 after he starts to rage
Rage 6/7

  • Move action to C10
  • Free action to rage
  • Standard action to attack with Power Attack

Attack 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Damage 1d12 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17

Miss chance (High means I hit, low means I don't) 1d100 ⇒ 83
While I rolled a hit for miss chance, I doubt my 11 connects.

ROLG THE RED

You'd bump into m'Shimu before entering C.10 (that's m'Shimu's current location). So pick a square adjacent to that (along your avenue of approach), and that's where Garr'ak ends his movement, and then (given that Garr'ak would then know m"Shimu is in C.10) your attacks can go on m'Shimu at that point.
.
Let me know which square Garr'ak is in given all that.

:: Round 2 ::

Garr'ak's vicious strike meets nothing but air, and a heartbeat later, he sees the Snake man stumble by with a whiffing punch of his spiked gauntlet. The snake, however, disappears once again.

Arbiter:
Spiked gauntlet sneak attack
Disappear
Check your PM

Spiked gauntlet 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

1d20 ⇒ 16

Spiked gauntlet sneak attack; disappear.
Attack 8 (natural 1 -- auto miss)

You're up.

We'll go with D11 is where he stopped then.

Still enraged, Garr'ak would start looking around for a target to hit.

Arbiter:
Hit Points (Modified by rage) 6/28
AC 16
Rage 5/7

  • Move action to try and perceive where his enemy is
  • Standard action to ready an attack to step up/attack his Snake if he becomes visible within range of such

Perception 1d20 ⇒ 11

I doubt an 11 spots where your character is.

Unsure of where his enemy is, he readies himself.

Your go.

ROLG THE RED

:: Round 3 ::

Another javelin sails at Garr'ak's back (from G.10), and once again the snake disappears.

Arbiter:
Sneak Attack Javelin throw
Disappear
Check your PM

Javelin 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
---> Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2) + 4 = 11

1d20 ⇒ 14

Javelin sneak attack from G.10, disappear
Attack 19 (vs. flat footed AC), Damage 11 (2 of which is sneak attack damge)

You're up.

Seemingly on his last leg, Garr'ak would move to the square where he last saw his opponent.

Arbiter:
Staggered

Hit Points (Modified by rage) -5/28
AC 16
Rage 4/7

  • Move action to move to G10

Ends in G10 if nothing stops him.

ROLG THE RED

So is this pretty much the most boring and ridiculous arena fight you could imagine?

:: Round 4 ::

An abandoned javelin hits the sand as a spear-tip speeds its way towards Garr'ak's exposed side. And then, unsurprisingly, the snake disappears again.

Arbiter:
Sneak Attack Longspear
Disappear
Check your PM

Javelin 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
---> Damage 1d8 + 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + (3) + 6 = 15

1d20 ⇒ 2

Longspear sneak attack, then he disappears
Attack 18 (vs. flat footed AC), Damage 15 (3 of which is sneak attack damge)

You're up.

It was a bad match up for me, where did the javelin drop at? And where was it that Snake appeared at?

ROLG THE RED

Oh, my bad. F.12 for both. He dropped it in order to make his longspear attack (both free actions)

Garr'ak, with a final push would move over to swing his greataxe with all his might at the last square he saw his enemy in.

5-foot to G11 and attack square F12

Arbiter:
Staggered

Hit Points (Modified by rage) -21/28
AC 16
Rage 3/7

  • No action 5-foot to G11
  • Standard action to power attack F12

Attack 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Damage 1d12 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20

Miss chance (High means I hit, low means I don't) 1d100 ⇒ 29

Well it would have been nice if I could have rolled some decent numbers and you were still in that square...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------

Mere moments after the hulking figure's greataxe embeds itself into the ground, the man behind it would hit the arena floor dead as could be...

Well fought and congratulations on the victory. You only had to deal him 48 hit points of damage before he killed himself off with the final attack. Its just a shame that neither of his two attacks connected...

ROLG THE RED

Yah, sorry about that. If it helps, i'm not planning on using this guy in the real arena. :/

There are about 12 seconds of silence before the spear slams into the dead man once more, skewering him to the arena floor.

CDG 3d8 + 1d6 + 18 ⇒ (5, 1, 2) + (1) + 18 = 27

Then the snake bends low, tongue flicking out in an effort to see if the man is, in fact dead. Apparently happy that he's won, the snake's eyes range over the small audience, raise his bloody longspear in a strange salute, and he jogs his strange, halting jog back through his entrance.

Hope you get something smashable the next go-round, man.

Nah, no big deal. If I would have connected things might have been a bit different considering the lowest damage roll I had was a 17.

This is not the character I plan to bring into the live version either. Though I have a similar build to this on the back burners.

ROLG THE RED

Oof.. yah, that would have changed things up a bit had that landed.

Indeed. He's not a light hitter. Going head to head with a melee fighter that doesn't block attacks, he's likely to fare quite a bit better.

I'd share some numbers, but I don't want to throw them out in front of everyone.

ROLG THE RED

I can understand that.

Getting itchy to try out my live arena build.

ROLG THE RED

Yep Yep Yep.

We gotta be patient with Jehova, though. He/she's already put ina ton of effort, and I don't want them getting annoyed/frustrated before we even get this thing off teh ground officially.

Most definitely. I just have a build in the background that I really want to surprise someone with.

I shan't be annoyed or frustrated, and hopefully everyone can be a little patient as long as we actually do get going soon. I'm glad you guys enjoy the arena so much. I'm working on getting things off of the grounds without snubbing real life stuff overmuch. Should have some time this evening.
