The One Ring RPG

Other RPGs

Hi all,
Anyone else have this yet? I picked up the core rules, gamemaster's screen, and adventure book. We browsed through it the other night and tried out character creation. The books are nice and the system seems interesting (The page refs in the core book seem pretty badly borked but the Index is workable so maybe it's not a big deal.)

Anyway...is anybody interested in brainstorming some Middle Earth-appropriate adventure seeds with me? I'm very familiar with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings but am a bit of a loss for what makes a ME adventure without crossing into D&D territory. I'd be particularly interested in coming up with some ideas that would work for a single "player-hero", as TOR calls PCs.

My co-GM created a Hobbit character with knowledge of herb lore and a bit of wanderlust. I was thinking of sending her on a bit of an adventure, perhaps inspired by the recently returned Bilbo...maybe a little trip to The Prancing Pony and some small bit of funny business in Bree. After that we could head toward the Wilderlands (Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, Dale) where the first core book is set.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also would love to hear the experiences of anyone who has read the books fully or, better yet, played a session or two. Thanks!

I recommend the Extended Index. It's on the C7 websire in the downloads section for The One Ring.

As for adventures, my first group was a rather polyglot collection who went through several of the ones from the Tales adventure book. Nothing I made up myself, because I wasn't confident with the system to do so.

My second has two Beornings, two Woodmen, and a Halfling. They're doing adventures in the Anduin Vale and parts of Mirkwood so far. The first involved them investigating theft of honey from Beorn's bee-hives. Another took them down the river to search for a particular type of plant needed to heal a poisoned leader. They're currently tracking down a murderer, and are going to get a nasty surprise when they catch up with him. I've got some ideas for things that might happen, but a couple are starting to think of things they'd like to do themselves so I'll probably run some adventures to resolve those. It helps that they're Tolkein fans, although only one of them has played a Tabletop RPG before.

Will check out the index. Thanks for the tip. I hadn't even checked out the C7 site at all...

Sounds as if you've been pretty successful so far! Nice that non-RPGers can jump into the game. IMHO, Tolkien fans untainted bt D&D would be the best players. No murder-hobo action allowed! ;)

It's not a good game for people who like to swing swords first and talk later, that's for sure. Combat is nasty and injuries are serious business.

As for non-RPGers, it's certainly not a complex game mechanically from the players perspective. None of the people from the second group has had any difficulty getting to grips with how it works. I do think it's a little harder for GMs as there's a certain amount of vagueness to skills and specialties that mean judging their usefulness in a situation is a hard line to get right.

I don't know if you're already aware of it, but there's a very nice online character generator here. Fully up to date with the game. And with a dice roller too. It's worth a look at.

I got this game a couple months ago and I have been itching to play it. I love the advancement/reward system.

I finally gave "The One Ring" a good look early this week, and the reviews and videos impressed me enough that I purchased the revised core rulebook and several source books. The revised rules arrived today. I loved the artwork and the rules are good -- very Tolkienesque. The size almost daunted me, but skimming it reassured me a bit. I also had to remind myself that the core book includes an adventure -- not just rules.

As for adventures, I have "The Darkening of Mirkwood" campaign coming, which I have read good things about, and the Wilderlands adventure book and Mirkwood and Rivendell source books en route too (the Rivendell book will be out in November, though the PDF is already released). I will probably rely on the professional adventures and campaigns to begin with before making my own. I do have many resources from the Decipher "Lord of the Rings" tabletop RPG as well as the free "Hall of Fire" fanzine that lasted for several years (86 PDF magazine-like issues of Middle Earth lore, NPCs, items, and adventures). The fanzine includes info on earlier ages of Middle Earth by the way.

I should add that, though I played and liked the Decipher LOTR game, the mechanics of "The One Ring" seem superior by far.

Anyone have advice on Lore-Master aids for boning up or reminding one's self on core mechanics? I didn't order the Lake-Town and LM screen yet and am undecided on whether I'll do so. I hoped a similar free resource to duplicate the screen's reminders would be around.

The Gm screen, which I lay flat, is very useful....mainly because the rules are all over the place.
The games development system is very strong to allow your pc to develop along cultural lines
Played as written you do burn through hope which doesn't come back very quick. With a TN of 14, even with 2 skill pips you fail half the time, which just seems a little too harsh.
Everyone needs to be in lotr book mode and not d20 mode.....treasure is sort of bad, sort of!!

After about 10 sessions your character is quite competent but likely, as my elf scholar does, has permanent shadow upon them and suffered some tragedy and loss.
I have played most of the darkening campaign, it is quite challenging and full of much despair and little glory

The lake town book is good for an urban adventure, has some useful water, marsh stuff on monsters, herbs, etc and the archetype from there has some very cool options

I have the original box, screen/lake town, darkening of mirkwood and heart of the wild books. Looking forward to picking up the revised core rule book soon. I also have the Hobbit Tales card game.

I don't have much of a feel for the mechanics of the game but I really like the source material and style of the books and think it'll be a fun read as I get to it.

Go to the Cubicle 7 forums for TOR. A few players put out good gaming aids such as cheat cheats, travel mats, battle mats etc. IIRC, most of these are in one of the moderators "sticky" tread at the top, something like TOR resources or something.
