[Jehova's Arena, Test] Fight the Twenty-Eighth, Kailin vs. Galen

Play-by-Post

Kailin also has himself a new face to attack with a snake, and one who rhymes with him! Most of the crowd is off elsewhere, but Kailin has enough of a following to ensure a few spectators, and still more are always curious to see the first fight of the next potential great gladiator.

Kailin A10, Sunahl A11, Galen L10. Initiatives and pre-game, please.

Male Half-Elf

Well, Kailin rarely showboats. I need to get Aros back into the mix sometime... Now he showboats.

Kailin enters the arena with a light step, Sunahl following close by him.

The half elf wears leather lamellar armor. On the side of his belt rests a spell component pouch, and a katana and light crossbow sit on at his sides, opposite each other.

As he takes position, he draws the sword from its sheath, the edge glinting in the light of the arena, and assumes a battle ready stance.

Beside him, Sunahl coils around and snaps his jaws a few times toward the new combatant.

Arbiter:
Kailin's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Sunahl's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Kailin's Initiative is 17, Sunahl's is 6.

Entering the arena is a medium buidt human clad in studded leather armor a Scimitar hangs at his waist. ready for quick tretieval is a quiver of arrows apparently color coded by the fletching

in his had a composite bow .

He glances around checking the arena terrain and the crowds.

Arbitor:

initiative roll: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

off to a great start already initiative = 8

Male Half-Elf

:: Surprise Round ::

Kailin mutters some magical words and a blue spark jumps across his hand, up his arm, and then fades out.

Spellcraft DC 16:
Shield

That'll be all for Kailin's turn. Galen's up.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

Galen readies himself as his opponent cast a spell. he maintians an indifferent look on his face. either he knows the spell and does not care or he isn't versed in magic at all. hard to tell

but as the spell is being cast Galen knocks the arrow and draws for the shot.

the arrow will fly but not before the spell is completed.

arbiter / rolls:

single shot using a trip arrow
attack roll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
trip attempt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Attack roll = 13
damage if a hit = 3
if a hit then 22 vs CMD or prone

Male Half-Elf

No hit.
.
:: Surprise Round for Sunahl ::

As the arrow sails by the half-elf, clattering against the wall behind him, Sunahl snarls and moves in front of Kailin, drawing himself up to full height, protectively.

:: Round 1 ::

Kailin walks up more calmly, repeating the gestures, but this time pressing the spell into Sunahl instead. A light blue spark jumps over the snake's deep blue scales before fading out as it did before. The eidolon continues to obscure most vision to the summoner behind him.

Same spell as before, same DC, Sunahl is in square E10, Kailin is in square D10, and Galen is up.
.
If I'm handling cover correctly, I believe Kailin's got it.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

Galen steps a bit closer and readies his nesxt shot then with lightning speed two arrows sail toward the serpent protecting its master.

Arbiter and rolls:

5' step up to K 10 Sunahl is now in point blank range
rapid shot and deadly aim regular arrows
attack Arrow #1: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 1 - 1 - 2 = 24
attack Arrow #2: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 1 - 1 - 2 = 9

damage arrow #1: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 + 2 = 7
damage arrow #2: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 + 2 = 6

Galen in K-10
Attack roll #1 = 24
Attack roll #2 = 9
damage arrow #1 = 7
damage arrow #2 = 6

all shots were on Sunahl

Male Half-Elf

First one hits just barely.
.
Sunahl's gonna go ahead and delay his turn from Round 1, to put himself on the same Initiative as Kailin (I just find it easier).
.
So, :: Round 2 ::

One of the arrows pierces Sunahl's scales, becoming lodged in his side, and he growls in pain. Kailin winces before sliding the tip of a finger across the edge of his blade, drawing a tiny bit of blood. With some arcane incantations, blue lines of electricity jump across his hand, and he presses it to Sunahl's back.

Arbiter:
Lesser Rejuvenate Eidolon: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Spellcraft DC 16 for the spell:
Lesser Rejuvenate Eidolon

The lightning arcs around the Eidolon, condensing on the wound, and the arrow is forced out while the flesh knits back together, though there is still a scratch left behind as the light fades.

Newly recovered, Sunahl rushes forward, snapping his jaws towards Galen, as Kailin continues following behind him.

Kailin heals Sunahl, then moves up to H10. Sunahl moves to I10, and makes a bite at Galen.

Arbiter:
Sunahl's Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Grab: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Constrict: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

11 to hit, 13 vs CMD if it does, but I'm doubting either of them would go through. 2 and 5 damage respectively if they would and you'd be grappled.
.
Otherwise Galen's up.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

attack misses

Galen backs up 5' to avoid the creatures reach and takes another two shots at Sunahl it seems he cannot get a clear shot Kailin

arbitor and rolls:

same routine as before except no deadly aim 5' step to L9
attack arrow #1: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 24
damage arrow #1: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 1 = 11
attack arrow #2: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 21
damage arrow #2: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 = 5

Galen 5' step to L9
Attack #1 = 24
damage #1 = 11
Attack #2 = 21
damage #2 = 5

Male Half-Elf

Ouch, again, first one hits and now leaves him staggered/disabled.
.
:: Round 2 ::

As the second arrow hits home, Sunahl coughs, blood coming forth from his jaws, but he lurches forward and around Galen, keeping coiled low. Kailin moves around to the other side, and brings his sword around in a slash.

Sunahl moves to L11, Kailin moves to K8 and attacks (not flanking though).

Arbiter:
Kailin's Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

22 to hit, 7 damage.
.
Galen's turn.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

Galen is wounded by the swift blade strike He soon is finding himself nearly boxed in time to decide the greater threat. feeling confident that the serpent's wounds my hold it at bay Galen steps away from Kailin but toward Sunahl (a move he may regret if his guess is wrong)

Galen then takes a single shot at Kailin

Galen 5' step to K10 and single shot

arbiter and rolls:

using last trip arrow and deadly aim
attack roll: 1d20 + 8 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 - 1 + 1 = 17
damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 10
trip attempt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Attack roll = 17
damage = 10
if a hit then 24 vs CMD or prone

Sunahl gets an attack of oppurtuninty since Galen fired in his threat range

stats::

HP 15 / 22
Trip arrows used 2 / 2
arrows used 4 / 20

Male Half-Elf

No hit, but Sunahl also won't take the AoO. Incidentally, you were in his threatened range before the 5-foot step as well.
.
:: Round 3 ::

The serpent looks up as Galen fires his bow, but otherwise makes no move to strike, still weary. He simply continues to growl, waiting.

As the arrow just barely passes by Kailin however, he moves to the opposite side of Galen, putting the two in flanking position, and makes another cut.

Arbiter:
Kailin's Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Eh, 13 to hit, including the flanking bonus. 8 damage, but I'm doubting it goes through. Kailin's now in J9 while Sunahl remains in L11.
.
Galen's up.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

Galen manages to evade the sword swing. but the fact that the serpent neglected to take advantage of Galen's open flank is intriguing.

confident that the serpent has lost much of its fight Galen steps to get away from Kailin's sword.

5' step to J11

arbitor and rolls:

Galen takes another single shot using deadly aim
attack roll: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 8 + 1 - 1 = 18
damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 8

attack roll = 18
damage = 8

Still in Sunahl's threat range so Attack if you desire it

stats:

HP 15 / 22
Trip arrows used 2 / 2
arrows used 5 / 20

Kailin is up but Sunahl has an attack of oppurtunity on Galen first

Male Half-Elf

A miss again, but still no attack from Sunahl. He's pretty much just coughing up a lung and providing flanking for Kailin for now :P
.
:: Round 4 ::

The snake still fails to follow through on the attack, but slowly slithers to keep Galen within his sights.

Kailin moves around his foe and stays within flanking position of Sunahl, before making another cut with his sword.

Sunahl 5-foot steps to K11, Kailin moves to I11, keeping out of Galen's threatened range.

Arbiter:
Kailin's Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Wow! 1 away from a crit fail on that attack, combined with just shy of max damage. Awesome. Galen's turn.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

Galen again tries to keep a space between himself and Kailin after the last two oppurtunities he no longer fears a retaliation from the serpent.

Stepping back Galen lets loose another single shot after stepping back.

5' step to K10

Arbiter and rolls:

5' step to K10 and single shot with deadly aim
attack roll: 1d20 + 8 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 - 1 + 1 = 17
damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 9

and based on previous results another miss. (why can't I roll above a stinkin 10)

stats:

HP 15 / 22
Trip arrows used 2 / 2
arrows used 6 / 20

Male Half-Elf

Sheesh, whole lotta wiffing going on in this fight.
.
:: Round 5 ::

Sunahl slithers around to keep Galen from getting away from Kailin, then coughs, blood from his jaws staining the sand below him. "I can... keep this up all day..." he wheezes, then chuckles, coughing up a bit more blood.

Kailin grimaces as the eidolon coughs, and moves in for another strike, eager to finish the fight.

Arbiter:
Kailin's Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Buh. 15 to hit. 9 Damage if it does, but I'm guessing probably not. Sunahl's in L11 after a 5-foot step, Kailin moves to J9, avoiding your threatened area, before making his attack. Galen's turn.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

would you care to dance? I am seeing a pattern maybe just copy and paste from a previous round -- yes 15 is a miss

move to L9 (5' step)

how many rounds do your spells last?

Galen again takes a single shot

Arbitor and rolls:

5' step to L9 and deadly aim again
attack roll: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 + 1 - 1 = 21
damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 8

Attack roll = 21
damage roll = 8

Male Half-Elf

The spells last... long enough I suspect. They'll be running 'til about round 20. If we're not done by then, I'm going to be surprised.
.
On that note, your last attack hits. Kailin, assuming you were targeting him, takes 8 damage.
.
:: Round 6 ::

The arrow strikes true, and Kailin grunts, but still stands. Darting to the side, he rounds the pillar and comes up around Galen, while Sunahl continues to maneuver as well. Once in position, Kailin lashes out again.

Kailin does a move action to end up in L8 without moving through Galen's threatened area (specifically, J9, I8, J7, K7, L8), after Sunahl 5-foot steps to L10.

Arbiter:
Kailin's Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Hmm. Fingers crossed for 19 to hit, with 10 damage. You're up after that.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

KAilin's manuver has paid off catching Gaqlen off guard from what he expected and the sword bite deep into Galen's mid section.

not to thrilled with that Galen rapidly weighs his options.

seeing the serpent not in battle condition he counts that out at a real combat threat.

Galen tries to surmise the extent of his oppents wounds

first roll:

heal check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

heal check = 13

It seems Kailin is good at hiding his stsus from his enemies, a valuable trait indeed. I set an arbitrary DC at 15

Galen decides to test his luck and hope to end this in his next shot.

he slips off 5' feeling the pain of the hit spins and rapidly unleashes two arrows.

Galen is in square K10

Arbitor and rolls:

5' step to K10 and rapid shot at Kailin (no deadly aim)
Arrow attack #1: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 24
Arrow attack #2: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 8
Damage arrow #1: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7
Damage arrow #2: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 1 = 10

attack arrow #1 = 24
damage arrow #1 = 7
attack arrow#2 = 8
damage arrow #2 = 10

stats:

HP 5 / 22
arrows used 9 / 20

Male Half-Elf

The first arrow will hit, though it still won't down Kailin. He's certainly a bit injured now though.
.
:: Round 7 ::

As a second arrow finds its way to Kailin's chest, Sunahl snarls from behind Galen, clearly not happy with the injury. He bares his fangs as he and Kailin get into position, finally attacking along with Kailin.

Kailin 5-foot steps to K9, readies his action to go off once Sunahl is flanking. Once Sunahl 5-foot steps to K11, Kailin attack, then Sunahl, after which Sunahl will pass out, but they'll both get flanking benefits at least. I... guess he'll attempt a grab too, even though he'll be unconscious should he make it. He can at least constrict once I guess if it happens to succeed.

Arbiter:
Kailin's Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Sunahl's Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Grab: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Constrict: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Kailin's got 14 to hit, which I doubt does, but 10 damage if it did. Sunahl has 18 on a bite for 7 damage, and if that hits, he's also got a 19 Grab attempt against your CMD to grapple for another 5 damage. Regardless of whether that all goes through or not, he's gonna go ahead and pass out now.

With a vicious snap of his jaws, Sunahl goes all out on one last attempt to strike Galen. He clearly over-exerts himself however, as his breath catches from the strain, and he collapses to the ground, gasping.

Galen's turn.

Navasi, Human, outlaw Envoy 4 | SP 24/24; HP 28/28 | RP 4/4 | EAC 17; KAC 18 | Fort +1; Ref +6; Will +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5; Perc. +7

Sunahl's attack will down Galen.

another victory for the companion.

not to complain much but its one of the reasons I voiced the issue about combat effective companions.

galen managed to do well considering he had to actually fight two enemies while you could focus on 1 single enemy.

but it was decided that a character that has a companion is the same victory value as a lone character.

Male Half-Elf

Seriously? This is at least the third time you've expressed discontent with my characters, whether it be from natural attack builds, companions, or something else. I'll refrain from getting into an argument about it here, but it is kind of bugging me, I'll be honest.
.
Anyway though...

As Galen falls along with the snake, Kailin moves over to Sunahl's side quickly. He pets the bleeding eidolon's head, comforting him and sharing a few silent words for a moment, before releasing the link between the two. The serpent slowly dissipates into dark stormclouds and vanishes as the rune on Kailin's forehead fades.

Rising back up, Kailin turns toward Galen and raises his katana, lining it up for a finishing blow, then bringing it down with full force. Afterwards, he sweeps the blade to relieve it of most of the blood, then sheathes the weapon and heads back toward the door he entered through.

Just another reminder that the arena is not meant to be artificially balanced in any way. If a single 'best' tactic presents itself, I imagine it will to be used by those who want to win. So far this hasn't been the case. The combatant with the best current record hasn't been using natural attacks, companions, etc, and I have seen/expect to see effective builds with wildly different concepts. If you feel you're at a distinct disadvantage in your fights, I encourage you to rethink your own build to shore up weaknesses that you might have. If you feel that there is a serious disparity in power between one character and everyone else, we can discuss it, but most imbalances (especially of the 'rock paper scissors' variety), are just part of the way this arena works.
