Klar - One-handed or Light?

Rules Questions

Quote:

Klar (One-handed Martial weapon)

12 gp 1d4 1d6 ×2 — 6 lbs. S — ISWG

AC ACP ASCF
+1 — -1 5%

The traditional form of this tribal weapon is a short blade bound to the skull of a large horned lizard but but a skill smith can craft one entirely out of metal.

Benefit: A traditional klar counts as a light wooden shield with armor spikes. A metal klar counts as a light steel shield with armor spikes.

Weapon Feature(s): special

So this is what gets me, for Two-Weapon Fighting do I treat it as a light weapon or a one-headed weapon, or both getting -2 to attacks with TWF but power attack is treated as one handed.

Or does the bold section just means this for feats.

I had this discussion with a fellow player and past GM the other day, but was thinking the worse of it all. What do you think? Has this been discussed before?

Thank you,
-Hexen

Dark Archive

It's a One-Handed Weapon. Only the Thunder and Claw feat makes it a Light Weapon for purposes of TWF.

It can be used as a Klar as a One-Handed Slashing Weapon or a Light Spiked Shield as a Light Piercing Weapon.

Thunder & Fang Feat makes the Klar wielding into a Light Weapon and a Maul(Earth Breaker) into a One-Handed Weapon.

I would go with what its listing is under the weapons table, which is a one-handed martial weapon if you were going to use it as a weapon, take feats and such as if it were a weapon, no bonus to AC, 1d6 damage.

If you were going to use it as a shield then I would say you get to have the AC bonus, take feats as if it were a shield, and you get the damage as if it were the shield listed, which is 1d4 damage.

I would make you choose at the point you wish to take/buy it and then stick with using it in that fashion

EDIT: I have never looked at the whole Earth Breaker/Klar combo with Thunder & Fang so forgive any "crazy ideas" I might have had in my comment lol

@Drakkiel: The advantage of using a Klar is you can choose between the functions. Otherwise it would be better just to get a Shortsword or Light Spiked Shield alone.

@Azaelas Fayth: Yea I got that after looking at the Thunder & Fang feat and reading a little more lol...my GM tends to want his players to stay away from some of the more exotic weapons (yes I know Klar isn't an exotic weapon on the table, I mean exotic in the sense of where the weapon was made and is used normally) unless we are playing a campaign in an area that has those weapons or we have some awesome background that goes with why we would have that kind of weapon. This is the same GM that you could talk into giving you free Exotic Weapon Proficiency if you write out a really amazing back story as to why (no cheesy stories but actual thought out unique stories)

This is what he was thinking.

Sweet... I actually use a modified Weapon Group Proficiency Feat System from Unearthed Arcana.

IIRC: I can use the Klar as both my shield and main handed weapon while keeping the shield bonus and wield a gladius as my off-hand.

If I attack with the shield as a slashing weapon and have improved shield bash, do I keep my shield AC?

I actually think they are separate. So you can attack with the Klar without the feat and still keep the Shield AC.

Grand Lodge

Wait.

You can attack with a Klar, and keep the shield bonus to AC?

When? Where? How?

I think it is a loophole but with the way I have seen similar shields used I can see it working.

Dark Archive

Well, if you have Thunder and Fang, it explicitly says you keep your Shield bonus to AC. No loopholes required.

So I guess you would need ISB or T&F.

ISB if you don't want to go the Maul Route.

Dark Archive

Yup.

I, personally, wouldn't bother with a Klar outside of the T&F feat, though, because while it's kinda cool, it's not really anything special on its own.

A Spiked Light Shield & Weapon for cheaper?

so if you enchant it to say +2, do you get +2 to damage? or +2 to AC? and what formula for enchanting do you use? weapons are more expensive to enchant than shields are

They each are enchanted separately. Like a Madu.

Grand Lodge

You can enchant it both as a shield, or weapon.

so its kind of like a double weapon? except instead of 2 weapons you have Shield/Weapon? Hmm...sounds interesting...again I've never looked closely at it lol

The Weapon is separate from the Shield. Think of it as Shield Spikes. So you can enchant each part separately.

Yea I got that :) I REALLY never even looked at that weapon until this forum so I was just surprised by it lol

Grand Lodge

Well, normal shields can be enchanted as both shields and weapons.

Shields are weapons.

The Klar makes a cool Blackblade.

When Hexen was discussing this with me I could not remember Thunder & Fang to save my life. Even one-handed the earthbreaker (maul) is a nasty weapon.

I hate the name Earth Breaker... Maul just sounds more Bad***...

:) I lurvs some sledgehammer-on-skull action!

I am no longer allowed to have Maul, Great Sword, Falchion, Great Axe, or Ogre Hooks on any of my Martials unless I give a very, very, very, very, VERY good backstory.

Did you do something that you shouldn't have with them? ;)

Well the Great Sword, Great Axe, & Falchion Characters all have been known to get a minimum of 3 Confirmed Criticals in a Row.

The Maul & Ogre Hook Characters have gotten strings of 17 & 30 Respectively.

Grand Lodge

Titan Mauler with Large Falcata.

Nodachi is basically Falchion mechanically.

Great Terbutje is exactly the same as a Bastard Sword mechanically.

By the way; thanks for pointing this out to me.
