does attack roll = ability check

Rules Questions

i may be mis-remembering some 4th ed rule, but is an attack roll considered a special form of ability check?

Grand Lodge

No.

Ability checks are anything that calls out an ability specifically.

Examples: Strength check. Charisma check.

Initiative checks might be considered ability checks, but attack rolls certainly aren't.

Gotta watch the terminology too. Circlet of Persuasion provides a +3 bonus to Charisma-based checks, which would apply to things like Charisma-based skill checks or a Sorcerer's concentration checks.

I have to disagree on part of that RD.

Intiative Rolls are just that. They are modified by dexterity and feats but they are not an ability check. It is it's own distinct roll.

Just like attacks are Attack rolls modified by strength or dex (for ranged ones) or Saving Throws are rolls mofied by Con, Dex or Wisdom, Initiative rolls are rolls modified by Dexterity.

Ability checks are normally rolls related to a statistic that must beat a Difficulty Class (DC) or an opponents similar but opposing roll.

Initiative rolls set a value for action order in combat. They don't do what ability checks do.

Grand Lodge

List of Ability checks:

Strength check.

Dexterity check.

Constitution check.

Intelligence check.

Wisdom check.

Charisma check.

That's it.

Quote:
At the start of a battle, each combatant makes an initiative check. An initiative check is a Dexterity check. Each character applies his or her Dexterity modifier to the roll, as well as other modifiers from feats, spells, and other effects. Characters act in order, counting down from the highest result to the lowest. In every round that follows, the characters act in the same order (unless a character takes an action that results in his or her initiative changing; see Special Initiative Actions).

A dexterity check is an ability check. An initiative check is a dexterity check. So a initiative check should be an ability check.

Intentionally difficult much? ;)

Grand Lodge

I don't see it as being difficult.

You can recognize an ability check by looking at what's written, and if it has "<insert ability name here> check" written, then it's an ability check.

I don't see why it would be anything else.

Thank you Jeraa. You beat me to it.

I don't just say random things for kicks. I know what I'm talking about.

looking at the sheet I see a dexterity stat and I see an Initiative stat that says to me they are two separate stats you can check

just often being the same number does not make them the same thing

They have it separate because there are other things that have an affect on your initiative (feats, class features, ect.) It's still a dexterity check, it says that in the wording for initiative. It's just that some people have improved initiative or the reactionary straight so they have a place on the sheet to right out their full bonus.

Silver Crusade

Or they're a level 2 Inq and initiative is modified by Dex and Wis.

A initative check is an initiative check, not a dexterity check. A lot of people that roll for initiative don't roll dexterity.

for exampple inquisitors add their wisdoms. Anyone with Improved initiative add +4. Reactionary trait add +2. And so on.

Sovereign Court

They add their Wisdom TO their Dexterity check, in addition to their Dexterity. There are feats and class features that affect other ability checks too.

vonFiedler is correct.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The rulebook specifically calls out initiative checks as dexterity checks. So, by RAW, it's a dexterity check.

Here's a link to the relevant, and already quoted, section of the PRD if you feel like double checking it yourself. PRD Combat Rules

Just to note: I am not disagreeing with anyone on initiative.

Seems weird upon reflection though.

Can't think of anything else that notes "this is a <insert ability name here> check".

It is so stone of good luck applies to initiative.
