YMMV = your mileage may vary. It started decades ago when people were talking about cars; quite literally, the mileage may vary between two cars based on driving styles and road conditions.
Here's the etymology of the phrasae:
In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency requires a set of standard emissions tests on all new vehicles which simulate city and highway driving. Part of the test measures estimated city and highway gas mileage estimates. Since no test can exactly simulate all driving habits and conditions, actual gas mileage of each vehicle will vary. As a result, when these estimated mileage claims from automobile manufacturers appear in advertisements, they are almost always accompanied with the standard disclaimer "your mileage may vary."
It has since been used in situations that don't specifically mean cars, but anything where something may differ between people based on habit and other varying characteristics.
In terms of Pathfinder, it usually means, "Here's how I play, you can try it this way too, but you may get different results."

Also consider that language changes over time. New words are made up and old words have their definitions changed. This is usually done through slang. Language is not static.

Most of us don't consider the use of slang to be "bad behavior of others." For most of us it goes into the category of "annoyance" at worst or "interesting" at best.
Let's put it this way. I'm putting myself in the shoes of your fellow players. I use a term that I, and several people I regularly spend time with, use to describe a scenario. That term happens to come from video gaming/MMO culture, though it likely had an earlier origin that's what mostly popularized it.
Then all of a sudden I get the third degree from another guy at the table about how that term doesn't belong here and I should stop using it. Suddenly declaring himself the Speech Police and deciding what I can and cannot say. When I try to inform the guy that this is how I and my friends have always described this event/situation, he gets mad at me.
Damn right I'm gonna be offended.

I hate it when people refer to their TTRPG PC's as "toons," they are NOT toons. That should be kept strictly to MMORPGs and never enter into any conversation about characters played with pen, paper, and dice.

Toons - Should be specific to games where the character actually look like cartoons (such as in WoW). I feel that it's just laziness on the part of the individuals who move from MMORPGs to TTRPGs to call their characters by this moniker, because they are so used to the MMORPG way of referring to the character. I've been playing/GM'ing for well over a decade, I've also played MMORPGs and I never refer to my characters in either as something from the other.
Avatars - I reserve for actual avatars in the game world where a deity has taken the form of a mortal to visit the prime material plane.
Alts - Unless you have a game where you are playing more than one PC, I have no idea why anyone would use this terminology. If you are playing two different PF campaigns one character isn't your "main" and the other isn't your "alt." Now you could roll up additional PC's and have an "alt" if your current PC dies.

I have no illusions that one hobby is superior to another, but that they are indeed separate things, and would prefer they be treated as such.

It's all a matter of context. In TTRPG's avatars are explained to be Gods/Deities assuming mortal form to walk amongst the populations. Unless you are playing an immortal character coming to the prime material plane, your PC is most assuredly not an avatar by that definition.
Unless YOU (in RL) are an immortal god, your character isn't an avatar :P
In internet terms an avatar most often is a representation of you (as in a picture).
But, as I stated it's just a pet peeve of mine, so my opinion only holds whatever weight you give it on these boards. I won't get upset if you don't agree with me because we can't all agree on everything, it's just human nature.
