Cowboy

Advice

Liberty's Edge

Ok, so I have this idea in mind for a PFS Cowboy-esque character.

Elements of a Cowboy:
Animal Husbandry, Roping expertise, pistol marksmanship <Both from the saddle and on foot.>
I'm excited about the build and have some questions.

Foremost on my mind is the question of tying off a rope to the saddle and lassoing an enemy as my horse rides by..... I know what I want to happen, and I understand what would likely happen should this feat be accomplished, as I see it dude gets dragged along behind the horse, what I don't know is how Pathfinder rules represent the situation.

Secondly, is it too much to ask of my GM to have him describe the setting of a scenario before I go into it? I'm not saying this character would actively avoid any situation, but a lot of scenarios don't lend themselves to horsemanship, but with the gunslinger levels, I can probably handle myself in any situation. Just want some thoughts.

For the build, you're better off in the Advice forum, and this may get moved there. The Lasso description says that it works like a Net, so I'd use the Net mechanics, possibly in conjunction with the Drag combat maneuver. Not sure if that's RAW, though.

For the scenarios, if you search here in the Society forum for threads on Cavaliers, you should find some discussion of which scenarios are "mount friendly".

Good luck!

Well thanks, the build is kind of my own, and I'm not really looking for advice on it, just mechanics of what I want to do. Thanks for posting. The second part is why it's here, about asking table GM's before the game starts about a description of the scenario's setting.

Have you thought about playing Musketeer cavalier? Your horse will be a lot better and less likely to die.

Unfortunately, the Musketeer archetype is not legal for PFS.

oh and I just remembered musketeer loses his mount anyway. A regular cavalier with EWP (firearms) works, though.

I did this with a Gnome.

Cavalier 4 levels, Mysterious Stranger 1. Take the Gnome race trait that allows you proficiency with the weapons you craft. A lasso is among the cheapest weapons in the game. As I leveled I planned to take horse master (the feat).

However, if going PFS, I don't think you can do that.

This would be easier to do in a home game, for certain.

Cowboy = gunslinger/ ranger if you lasso (net) and drag an opponent from your mount, then it would be opposed str check to drag, or str check/ escape artist to break free, or they could use a weapon to break free. If you hold the rope it's a str check vs you, if its tied to the saddle then it's str vs mount. I would give you some penalties to your ride if you are dragging a struggling victim.

Four levels of cavalier would allow you to get Horse Master as a feat at level 7, gaining your animal companion full HD. I would recommend the emissary archetype as you lose Tactician for a bunch of mounted bonuses, and the ability to move full speed in medium armour. Since gunslingers don't need a lot of Dexterity, you could get away with a regular breastplate for quite some time with that. Going gunslinger 8/cavalier 4 would be a good mix.
