Player missing an eye

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

So I had a player recently join my ROTRL campaign and part of his backstory is that his character lost an eye. Now, I think I remember reading somewhere that this can impose a penalty to perception checks but I'm not exactly sure of the value of the penalty. I was also wondering if the perception hindrance was the only such penalty or if there were others or any at all.

If he's had it for a long time, he probably doesn't take any penalties. If it's fresh it does.

Precedent is in the blindness paragraph in the CRB.

I dunno about any official penalty, but here's a 3rd Party "Drawback" (sort of like an anti-trait).

I'd give him something to compensate for it if you wanted to go that route though, IMO you shouldn't hold flavor against someone. Just assume he's like Syaoran, he's gotten used to guarding his bad side and can fight just fine.

He actually took it for a challenge and asked what the penalty would be. I couldn't directly find anything so I came here. But I'll probably just pass over the negative and call it good because from the sound of it he's had it for awhile. Thanks all!

He might not suffer a penalty sight-based Perception checks, but he might suffer a penalty on all ranged attack rolls (due to his lousy depth perception).

I cant see out of my right eye IRL.
Im trying to think of some of the draw backs, as over the years I have learned things to compensate for the lack of natural ability.

I used to have a real hard time with depth perception, knocking things over, bumping into stuff.
This made a real problem with night vision goggles as it got much worse once you put those things on. I once actually walked into a tree and then a hole within 30 seconds of eachother. I have since decided my natural nightvision is better than walking around with those things on.

I cant wear 3d glasses for movies, gives me a terrible headache in a swimmy sick feeling.

IVe learned depth perception now, so it's odd, mine is better now than people with two working eyes. Probably because they dont practice it much.

I had to learn to shoot with the other eye. So Im naturally right handed by left eye dominant. But Im a better shot than most people I know... also more deliberate training than natural ability again.

When I get something, anything in my left eye, like a bug flew in it etc, I AM blind! at least temporarily.

people approaching from the right shoulder or slightly behind my right shoulder have a tendency to startle me, if I cant hear them. This has become more common as I get older. Don't know why.

If I had to translate any of this into game terms, I would say if he had to make a sight based saving throw, he would get a -2 to -5.

Sight based perception -2
hearing perception +1

Diplomacy checks -1 (people dont like dealing with MR one eye)
Intimidate checks +2 (Dude that guy is creepy) (I dont wear an eye patch...the eye is still physically there, it's not a hole)

reflex saving throw and acrobatics -1.

Liberty's Edge

I've been missing an eye since birth (39 years) and I can see having a penalty to perception to spot thing maybe -1 or -2.

There is the Deadeye trait from Orcs of Golarion.

You have only one working eye, but that eye is especially keen. You receive a +2 trait bonus on all Perception checks involving sight.

I am one of the best shots with a gun that I know. I think it's because most people are thrown off by having to close one eye

edit: I am bad at throwing thing

Grand Lodge

Seriously, let him take the trait, and he's got numbers and flavor.

Does he prefer a penalty?

Thanks I'll suggest this to him.
