Perfectly Normal (an Aberrant chronicle)

Game Master karlprosek

Novas came on the scene in 2002 after the Galatea disaster. These superhumans have made great strides all over the world in the years since, from curing many varieties of cancer to cleaning up the oceans to turning Addis Ababa into a futuristic wonderland of cloud-scraping skyscrapers and autonomous cars. But this ain't no Addis Ababa- this is Tulsa, Oklahoma.

We can talk about non-character creation issues here.

Let the games begin.

Before we continue IC posting let's talk tenses. It's going to be confusing to read if we're all jumbling up our tenses. Right now we've got a mix of first person present ("I walk out"), first person past ("I walked out"), and third person past tense ("He walked out"). I prefer to write in third person past tense, but most of the boards here are third person present ("He walks out") and I'm fine with that.

Let's do a poll and see what the majority prefers. I'm not going to be a stickler and require 100% compliance but we're all going to need to try to write in the same tense most of the time or it's going to be a mess.

Also, please use quotation marks (" ") and bold font for spoken dialogue. Please use italics for unspoken thoughts. You can refer to the How to format your text blurb under the text window if you don't know how to do bold and italics.

Going to guess that Edwards used 'Paxton' and all the aliases and names is confusing as heck because being incognito does that? Otherwise, there could be a long while for the supervisor to get a response to his work request, eh? =P

Sorry! I swear I'll get everybody's aliases down eventually.

Male Human Nova Current Quantum Pool: 26

I don't mind either. My own preference for referring to own character's actions though is first person. Don't care about the tense really, as that'll depend on the situation and possible outcomes.

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

I prefer first person also. I'm describing his actions as he is doing them. As for tense, I prefer present tense, because again I'm describing it as he is doing it. I walk out instead of the other ways you mentioned. This helps me stay in character, since these are his thoughts and actions that I'm describing. if I step of character for some reason, I will use the ooc type.

Female* The Mediator Brick

There is a strong preference personally for the third person 'as if you're reading it in a story'.

When other folks use 'first person' it ruins the immersive quality of the writing because *I* (as a reader) am not the one doing the actions, and *I* don't like words being put to my actions. Not a lot of people do. It's jarring and ruins the sense of narrative.

example: If the reader sees this (First person, present):

I murder the school and put it to the torch, it is hotbed of sedition, anyways.

Then it's putting it to the reader that THEY are doing this action, right now, rather than the character in the writen text.

Written in third person, past though, it takes on this quality..

Paxton murdered the school and put it to the torch, it was a hotbed of sedition, anyways.

Edit: GM ninja'd me, need to learn to read.

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

I understand what your saying, but to me it is the difference between reading and acting. I love reading, but what I feel we do in a rpg is more like acting. We are playing a character. and trying to express their current thoughts, actions, and emotions. I need first person present to fit that. I will use past tense when relating something that happened before.

9th Generation Tremere | Blood: 7/14 | Willpower: 8/8

I'm a third person past kind of guy.

That's 2 for first person, 1 of each for present and past, and 2 for third person past tense.

Lorm, I get what you're saying, and I hope the tense isn't a deal-breaker for you, but we all need to write in the same tense or the thread is going to be terrible to read. Hopefully you mean you prefer first person present, not 'need' it.

Arknight and Dragon have yet to weigh in.

Male Human Nova Current Quantum Pool: 26

Kinda put my actions on hold for the moment, until someone else makes a move. As said, would seem appropriate for the group to meet up, unless our Storyteller has other plans?

Female* The Mediator Brick

I was kind of holding off on posting more until the other new arrivals could get their parts in?

I'm holding off on responses for Brad and Jane until I hear from Arknight and Dragon about their writing preference. I want to see what the consensus is on this issue before we do too much more writing.

Arknight and Dragon, what say you?

I prfer 3rd person. Sorry. Character coming tonight. My break wasn't so much a break as it was work 2x as hard as normal.

That's 3 for third person. It's looking like third person past tense is the way we're going to go. Lorm and Curtisin, I hope that's not a deal breaker for you. I'm going to go ahead and continue posting when I get a chance- probably tomorrow- and I will need everyone to try to post in the proper tense.

Thanks, guys.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

No real issue for me, certainly not a deal breaker, so will try to keep it in the right format. :)

Sorry, guys, one more day. Been crazy for me at work.

Female* The Mediator Brick

No worries, just relaxed.

Dragon, Arknight, how's it going?

hey, sorry life got away from me. working on him .. will ahve posts and things ready by tomorrow night.

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

Are you using the notation: 5d10 ⇒ (7, 7, 5, 4, 9) = 32 just to make it easier, ignoring the total?

I didn't know a better way to do it?

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

It is probably the easiest way.

Yeah, the total is irrelevant for us, it's just the individual dies that matter.

Sorry it's taking so long. My life has been super busy.... I'll get Casimir done today. Promises!!

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

No problem, RL interferes in most games.

I'm going to go ahead and introduce Gabe as an NPC. If Arknight wants to play, he's still welcome to do so.

I gotta drop out. I keep trying to get things done, but I haven't been getting him unil 100pm for the passed... Ever. So, sorry very very sorry. Life isn't cooperating. Happy gaming.

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

Sorry to hear that. Good luck with everything.

? Not much of a speed fanatic, couldn't tell you. Former Retail Worker/13

Be safe and careful out there.

No worries, have fun.

See you around, Dragon.

Male Human Nova Current Quantum Pool: 26

Just wanted to say I'm still here, but kinda failing to find a good way to segway into the action. And there's only that much Smalltalk you can do with someone you don't know. ;)

Female* The Mediator Brick

Well, do you need the batteries charged for it? The Segway, that is?

*is joking, knows the feeling.*

Me too. In RL I'm bad at that.

Super busy today, guys. I'll try to do something this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

Sorry, guys, I got sick and am swamped at work. I'm going to try to get something up before the end of the week.

Female* The Mediator Brick

These things happen, it's a busy time of the year for us at work as well. And that's before we factor in holiday scheduling adjustments and people out with injuries, and a couple of coworkers going back to school.

Get well, we'll see you when you get posted up again!

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

No problem at all. I've been too busy to post either, with the holidays having arrived.

Work is kicking my butt and Christmas is coming. Is everybody okay with a brief hiatus until the first week of January?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Two words.

Holidays.

Retail.

I'm on board with this idea.

Cool by me.

I'm still here. I'm in retail too, and we're getting slammed.

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

So glad the holidays are over.
