Figures and Pawns for RotRL

Rise of the Runelords

The Exchange

If I buy all the paper minis, along with my ROTRL miniatures will it cover all the creatures and npcs for all 6 books of the ROTRL adventure paths in my hardcover anniversary edition? Thanks for any response.

Hi John Mark Brown,

I made the paper minis for the Runelord AP and I'm in the process of updating all the sets to the Anniversary edition as many monsters/NPCs were added or changed. So the paper mini sets should have everything you need!

The paper minis are always quite good and complete.

I am far less satisfied that I bought the pawn set, the Bestiary Box, AND the $600 WizKids figure set, and every single section is still missing 3-4 figures/pawns that never got added to either the plastic figures or the pawns.

So my suggestion would be to do what you're doing -- go with the paper minis if you're willing to put them together. They're the only way to get a complete set of NPCs and villains.

Yow. Really? I was forking out for the pawns once my game got going again, but knowing that I might reconsider, or put together some of my own. I noticed the pawn set has no Rune Giants, so perhaps I'd have to be the first GM of my long-time gaming group to ever fork out for plastic minis... and I don't want to be the chump that does so. :P

Thank you guys. I had feeling the pawns and minis didn't cover everything. The paper minis seam to be the way to go from now on. Unfortunately I have bought everything else, the figs, the pawns and the bestiary, but something told me it still wasn't going to cover the whole adventure path.

One more question should I get a thick paper for my printer to print these paper minis?

Would it hold up better, and how do you store these?

Thanks again guys for the honest answers!

John

@Twigs -- I wasn't as bothered that the plastic WizKids figures weren't complete, because they're more "Collector's Items" than "Gaming Tools" in my mind, but the pawns are a constant pain. As an off-the-top-of-my-head example, for Jorgenfist I'm missing "only" Cinderma (taiga giant), harpy monks (though the Bestiary Box has harpies), rocs, and a Shining Child. And that's a "good" section in terms of only missing a few. Add in the WizKids figures and I'm only 'really' missing the taiga giant and the rocs, both of which are huge. (I understand huge pawns cost a heck of a lot more to make.) But fairly typical is that each section is missing 3-4 pawns that have artwork in the book, but no pawns in the set or the Bestiary Box, and they're frequently large or medium. (Lots of the Kreegs have artwork but no pawns.) I'd really like to see Paizo charge $10 more for the pawns and ensure that if there's artwork in the book, there's a pawn in the box. It would be nice to include the Bestiary 2 and Bestiary 3 pawns, since we can't get those boxes yet, but I'm in an industry where we publish something with the intent of it remaining static for a year or two, so I can at least see the argument for omitting things like the Shining Child.

@JMB -- I use photo-quality paper for both the pawns and the bases. Regular printer paper isn't stiff enough. I use glue sticks to put them together, and found that the brand matters immensely; Elmer's won't hold anything at all, nor will the Office Depot generic brand. We ended up using an ancient glue stick from my wife's desk, and I'm afraid I didn't pay attention to the brand, but it was awesome. Good luck! (I am fortunate in that I have an empty dresser in my gaming room, and all the paper minis go in it.)

Thank you. I guess finding the right glue will be by trial an error. There is a hobbytown shop in Dallas that may can give me the glue I need. I will probably check there next time I'm out of town.

Liberty's Edge

FWIW, I use the 110 lb card stock paper for my paper minis as well as the standard Elmer's white glue.

Yes; let me be clear: I found Elmer's glue sticks to be useless; I suspect the glue itself would be fine. But I have the fine manipulation of a kindergartner, so I haven't dared use real glue. (My wife is also of the opinion that I'd just eat it...)

Liberty's Edge

I don't eat it. I just like to get a glop in my fingertips and then roll it into little balls and throw them across the room.

Any advice or ideas or advice is appreciated. Thank you!

There's a guide for DYI Pawns using a few free computer programs and foam sheets that I'm planning on following to fill in the blanks in my pawn collection when I run it later this year.

Though I do agree with it being incredibly annoying that something sold as the Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection is missing so many important pawns.

Here is a link to a post where someone listed all the Minis and tokens to run the AP. I found the post helpful.

Hey Jack, great job on the papers! Can you let us know which sets you've already updated and which are still pending?

Hey Diplomat,

Sorry, I missed your post. I have updated everything except the bestiary.

Cheers! Do you know when the Bestiary might be done?

My hope would be in the next week or so.

Fantastic! I'll hold of printing these until they're updated. If they're anything like the Townsfolk I'll be most pleased!

For those looking for a very quick and easy option for paper minis who already have pawn sets, I have found that using Avery Sticker paper (about $13 for 15 sheets at an office supply store) works fantastically. The minis print at right about the right size (if you keep the base on them) to just slap over a pawn. The coating on the pawns makes it really easy to peel off the sticker when you're done to reuse the pawn for something else. (If you have the beginner's box, I typically use all the medium sized pawns they had for small creatures - like goblins and the like as my paper mini subjects). Pic of how they turn out My picture is from the Curse of the Crimson Throne minis, as I have the Pawns for ROTRL, and don't really need paper minis until book 5 at this point. I promised Jack pictures and regrettably forgot to take them as we went through the top floor of the Hospice, but here is one just to show how well it works.
